Not even the really wild one who was shagging your actual boyfriend?? 😉

Well I don't think they were shagging outside, in view of everyone, were they?! There was obviously a secretive element to the whole relationship so yes, it's quite plausible that she didn't have any idea.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2024 09:33

Yeah,I just didn't buy it in a small town , everyone knows everyone scenario!

BIWI · 25/07/2024 11:15

What I found even more implausible, though, was that she didn't know her boyfriend/husband had a brother!

Malachy was born in 1981, so he was 25/26 when Ember turned 17 and Amy went missing in 2007.

So 10yrs older than any

9 then ember

And mummy encouraged it

It was pretty grim all round. And so darkly lit. Mind you, tis grim up north at the minute.

Just finished watching this. It was slow and nothing to write home about. But I was bored so kept watching til the end!
I can't really get on board with Jenna Coleman as an actress either. Too much breathy voice, smug smirks and dreamy stares.

JMSA · 25/07/2024 20:44

Oh, and I'm so glad it wasn't just me who didn't immediately suss out the different timelines!

She was so good in Victoria too.

It took us until the second episode to realise the time slip thing. Doh 🙄

Ralph Ineson's voice is so bloody annoying - really spoiling it every scene he is in.

If it gets any deeper he'll wake up in Australia one day.

She sounded like she was auditioning for one of those phone lines. I won't have been the only person shouting "Speak the fuck up" at the telly.

I found this disappointing. As someone else said, it had the potential if it was written better. It was trying to draw attention to young girls being groomed by older men, with Ember herself one of them.
But were we meant to like Malachy and hope he wasn't the killer as she and her daughter did? Not at all - he was having sex with a vulnerable underage girl and giving out roofies. He was meant to be in love with her but left her to go and have sex with the other girl...And we were meant to feel ok with him covering up a hit and run to protect ember and burying her body? It was all very messed up. Don't even start on Ember's lies. Too many holes for me as well. Why was malachy's friend not interviewed about the journalists death when it was right there at the jetty??
It overall left me confused as to the point of it all.

HungryWombat · 30/07/2024 07:47

We quite enjoyed it as a wonder what's going to happen next sense. And yes frustrating you couldn't make any real predictions. But it was 4 episodes and we bing watched it so satisfyingly wrapped up over 2 days.

I had read somewhere early on that they'd intentionally looked at male violence from lots of perspective and watching it with that in mind I think they'd portrayed this so well. And the futility she starts to feel when she sees it everywhere.

Her dismissive male boss
The lads on the pub
The headteacher who says "it's just year 11s" which is countered by ember.
The way Amy's dad was with the hammer.
And obviously the main bits about me using underage girls for sex being repeated each generation unless they stop it...

There was probably more I've forgotten now as well but quite liked that it ran as a thread.

lolly792 · 02/08/2024 08:02

I so wanted to like this but for me (and for a fair few others it seems) it fell flat.

The plot was full of very big holes - Ember being a similar age to Amy and Caitlin, clearly Amy's disappearance was a big thing in the tight knit community yet Ember conveniently didn't seem to know about basic stuff like Malachy having a brother. Didn't ring true that Malachy would be off shagging Amy when he was in love with Ember and having good sex (it was hinted at) with her. It's not like he was after a younger girl because ember was only 16, about to turn 17, and in fact young Ember had a much younger appearance than Amy anyway.

Obviously Ember was intended as a flawed character and not particularly likeable but her constant rudeness and ignoring rules really grated. My favourite parts were where Hitch stood up to her!

And it's always bloody annoying when a series is shot in almost darkness. Yes I know it's supposed to be atmospheric but it just becomes tedious when you're struggling to make out what's going on.

lolly792 · 02/08/2024 10:29

.... and Ember being so perfomatively protective about her daughter Hannah while at the same time physically threatening her boyfriend over the photo of Hannah in her underwear issue...all this while she herself had been taking drugs and driving illegally while a teenager herself.

I guess it was all making the point that people who've been off the rails/ having sex at a young age etc tend to be hypocritical over their own parenting and go to the other extreme of being over protective. But I think that's what grated - there was so much, very obvious Making A Point. Good drama gets messages across in a realistic way and doesn't need to spell things out as if the audience are dim

Ditto with the horse wanking - Yeap, we get it, Amy was an emotionally neglected, insecure teenager who was desperate for attention and acting out to get it. We didn't need the horse wanking to get that message across

diddl · 25/12/2024 18:11

Only just got around to watching this.

Thought it was OK but would have been more interested I think if it had been focussed on re looking at the disappearances of Amy & Kitty & Malachy's part in it all-re his relationship with Amy & Ember.

The whole grooming of teens in the present seemed too much like signposting what was going on with Malachy/Amy/Ember.

Totally unnecessary!

MerryGrimaceShake · 21/03/2025 17:09

Felt really unfinished and full of holes to me.

There was no build up at all in character relationships. Amy and Caitlin just suddenly being best mates/lovers in like, an hour? Ember being devistated Riz died like they had been besties the whole time, when it was clear Riz was on to her? Or was she? Because Riz had like 3 minutes of screen time.

Malachy pulling up to the only school in a tiny village where everyone knows everyone (except her who is totally oblivious to absolutely everything) in an extremely distinctive car and not one single person noticing, including the gossipy teens in the village of gossiping everyone knows everyone types???

Then suddenly Arg who has also had 3 mins of screen time has been obsessed with Ember for years?

It would have taken zero effort to foreshadow even some of these things. I couldn’t figure out how Ember even knew half the people there to just walk up to and speak to. Like the pregnant teens Mum, who it isn’t clear is her Mum until right near the end of Ep 3????? I couldn’t even just suspend my disbelief and enjoy, because none of it made sense.

And the other storyline might as well not have existed at all. They could have used all that time to foreshadow, explain relationships, show a bit of Embes background through flashbacks to Malachy with more substance than him and that fucking guitar!!!!!!

Hannah was also a little bitch.
