I'm sure it said he was 20

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 13:38

I think the programme seemed scared of making too big a point about grooming so made Malachy really not significantly older seeming or looking than Amy and also aged Amy up. This blurred the lines a bit so we wouldn't be too freaked out by the idea of Ember and Mack.

And those stupid names did never have a point.

purpleme12 · 23/07/2024 13:46

Well Ember was just because of the fire theme.

But I quite like the name Ember actually

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 13:50

Yes, I assumed it was symbolism.

But it just feels like a lot of this is very juvenile writing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/07/2024 13:52

What was the spider quote she said meaning ?

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 23/07/2024 14:13

I think it meant she was trapped in the middle of it all. Trapped in a web around her

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 14:27

The senior police officer told her she was the spider earlier in Ep 4. For no apparent reason.

purpleme12 · 23/07/2024 14:30

I think it was alluding to a web of lies
(Although unintentional in Ember's case)

butterpuffed · 23/07/2024 15:14

So Ember finally realised she had killed Amy but blamed it on Arj . And the 'happy little ending' with her , her mum and her daughter wasn't what it seemed to be .

Ember hadn't really been a character you could empathise with and she'd have to live with what she'd done for the rest of her life , but I didn't think it would bother her that much .

PrincessScarlett · 23/07/2024 18:47

Ember was the spider in the centre of the web of lies and deceit.

Ember said Amy was in the year below her at school so Amy was 15 (turning 16 at some point) and Ember turned 17 whilst dating Malachy.

And the Japanese knotweed was a complete rabbit hole as well despite making a big deal of it in episode 2.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/07/2024 19:10

Yes the plant meant nothing

Right so year younger meant 15 turning 16

Wonder why Amy was wild

Was it as dad was shagging /they didn't really like her

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 19:23

Oh God, yes, the Knotweed!!

butterpuffed · 23/07/2024 19:33

Oh , the knotweed . I did a post about it , they fooled me with a red herring 😅

Machiavellian · 23/07/2024 20:44

At least it showed grooming as not exclusively focused on a certain group that seems to get a very bad rap in the media.

deeahgwitch · 24/07/2024 09:01

Was Ember in the same school as Amy and Kitty ?
Was it supposed to be a small village or a town ?
If a village they should know about each other, shouldn't they?

I'm guessing Amy was so wild as she was desperately craving attention. Both her parents ignored her but the more outrageous her behaviour she then got a negative reaction from her dad. And by her sexual behaviour she got attention from men. Even when she went missing neither parent seemed that bothered. Amy told Kitty she was invisible.

They got "a very bad rap in the media" because they systematically raped young girls.

The Jetty is a very different scenario. The events you appear to be referring to should not be used as a comparison here.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/07/2024 11:36

Yes for a small town that hitch is friends with the crew and a copper

I'm amazed that ember didn't know Amy and Caitlin as only in year below

I've never seen "a certain group" portrayed in a TV drama apart from the docudrama Three Girls in 2017 about the Rochdale grooming gangs. On the contrary, even Corrie goes out of its way to portray groomers as always white.

BIWI · 24/07/2024 16:10

I don't know @Blondeshavemorefun - I went to a large comprehensive, and certainly didn't know anyone in the year below.

Piggywaspushed · 24/07/2024 16:11

Not even the really wild one who was shagging your actual boyfriend?? 😉

Yes - Ember not knowing her was odd.

excelledyourself · 25/07/2024 00:46

Malachy was born in 1981, so he was 25/26 when Ember turned 17 and Amy went missing in 2007.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2024 06:51

Oh, well spotted!

This is interesting- messing about with it loads in early shots and workshops explains why there were plot holes and lots of the actual narrative from earlier scenes didn't matter. In particular the fact that Caitlin was missing from so much of the present and then suddenly introduced as a perfectly traceable lecturer makes sense if she was to be a killer in hiding!

The Jetty Almost Had “a Completely Different Ending”

Jenna Coleman says Cat Jones’ new crime drama went through multiple versions before landing on its ending. Spoilers.
