For those who have seen all five episodes and binged it all.
Thought it was ok, very funny at times.

When she finds out Gary has brothers: 'There's 5 of you? And 3 are firemen? FIREMEN??' Grin

re. Kevin's age - on a related tangent Jonny was called Ian in the pilot so I think the odd detail does change but I'm not expecting JRR Tolkein levels of universe building so I can happily ignore it!

I thought it was touching that Kevin's mum was dead and had died when he was 8 - made sense about how much he dotes on his children.

was ian not another dad, that liz slept with 20 years ago and the alpha mums were still going on about it?

Just finished the series.

I definitely didn't laugh as much as the first 2 series, but I loved gay they delved more into the characters' personal lives. Because what Motherland does REALLY well - other than hysterical and relatable moments - is subtle raw emotion. There's a few moments in the first two series - such as Meg holding back tears at Sports Day when she has to take off. I cried when Meg got the all clear and when Kevin visited his mum's grave. I also thought Julia's crying on the phone in the last episode was brilliant.

Also a lot of unexpected moments - Kevin and Amanda Shock Anne being pregnant again. Anne revealing she works in a senior position at GSK Grin Paul turning up at the end. Jonny getting engaged (poor Amanda). And Liz maintaining her long distance relationship from series 2.

Lucy Punch stole the show though didn't she. She's an amazing actress I'm not surprised she's been in so many Hollywood films.

Some fittie men too - Sam Shepherd, Anthony Head, Paul, Jonny.

The ONLY criticism I have of series 3 is that Meg simply didn't look like somebody going through chemotherapy. Anyone who's lived through chemo, or lived through a loved one receiving treatment will know who cripplingly exhausting it is. I lived with someone going through it and some days coming down to the living room was a success. I remember walking worth her to the end of the street, and we were so happy she managed to achieve that. Even if - and it's a big if - a chemo patient felt like putting on make up and doing things like going on a school trip, the exhaustion would still be obvious. Meg didn't move any more slowly, she didn't appear tired, or in pain, no side effects, headaches, mouth ulcers etc.

I suspect they wanted to show Meg as strong and a warrior beating cancer, but it's a bug bear of mine that so many TV shows and movies get this wrong. The only realistic depiction of a chemo patient I've ever seen was on Jane the Virgin. It actually gave me goosebumps watching it because it was so realistic. It would just be nice if the battle with cancer was played more realistically - if Meg was moaning about the side effects for example. Too many shows just fo down the road of sticking a turban on their patient and nothing else changes at all.

I really liked that Kevin was cooler than Amanda about their fling, especially when he said it was 'good not great'.

I had a little cry at the end when Julia was on the phone. I feel a bit like that sometimes and my dh is much more supportive. She just sounded so exhausted with the load that really resonated.

I did guess Paul would turn up though. I also loved that she asks him for a divorce every Christmas and birthday plus when Meg and Liz were pointing out his good points (I also love Oliver Chris and have done since he was in the office).

Cried when Meg cried on Mother's Day and also when she got the all clear.

I said on the other thread that I did think Liz wasn't as strong. I liked the racist storyline on the school trip though (and lady button from ghosts).

Overall I enjoyed it. But I want to rewatch the Christmas episode

Ooh one more tiny criticism - I'd have liked to see the return of Julia's in laws! They're hilarious and it's so spot on how they behave in subtlety annoying ways.

HouseyHouse21 · 11/05/2021 22:22

Just watched them all - I do wish there were more!

Every scene that Julia was in inspired the perfect ratio of laughter and cringing.

It made for a very sweet final scene that Paul noticed Julia mooning after the builder. Not particularly consistent with what we know of him so far, but sweet all the same.

S3 Meg was much more palatable - she had some lovely scenes. I thought the racist mum storyline could have had a clearer resolution though.

What else - lovely to see Liz and her shepherd, and Kevin escaping from his terrible marriage. Seems like Amanda was the only one without a happy ending, but that's quite fitting. Loved it all!

Lady button! I knew I recognised her!
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 11/05/2021 22:39

I loved Natalie Cassidy as the TA, I hope we see her again!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 11/05/2021 22:40

Also Mrs Lamb needs a show of her own Grin

faithfulbird20 · 12/05/2021 03:03

You'd think after 2 seasons they'd have more episodes. I wish!!

Enjoyed it but nothing beats the Halloween episode from last season. Hilarious!!

avamiah · 12/05/2021 03:36

I just loved season 3, especially the episode with Joanna Lumley as Amanda’s mum In the restaurant and the part were Anne and her mum( who just came from Ireland) came into the restaurant and were so very kind and giving lots of compliments to Amanda and her mum saying how attractive and young they looked .
I just loved that .

avamiah · 12/05/2021 03:52

Oh I just have to say that I love Julia’s in-laws, and the Christmas Special with them was just brilliant.
However I think that just might of been the last season.?
I don’t know where the writers can go from there but who knows .

lollipoprainbow · 12/05/2021 05:08

Yes please bring back the in-laws they were hilarious!

alfafabean · 12/05/2021 05:20

I think Paul turning up shows that there are occasional points in the relationship where he makes Julia feel loved. Without it (as we read on MN all the time) the relationship would just be too awful and she would boot him out on his arse.
I was properly side swiped by Kevin and amanda! I thought that story line was going to be Kevin getting pulled for drunk driving and losing his licence as soon as he got it.
And Anne saying she used to be head of international product development for GSK was genius!
I just love liz. I was the equivalent of her when I was in real Motherland in London although I do have a career. I'm still the hobby northern one with a dick head ex! I lived the episode when she wouldn't part with the buggy.
I want Amanda's store to change back to the kebab shop it was before and liz to get a job there.

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2021 06:53

I hate and ( sort of ) like Amanda in equal measure.
I'd never be friends with someone like her though , she wouldn't talk to me at all in real life!!
I would struggle to be friends with any of them to be honest but then I'm not career orientated and Liz is a bit too abrasive ( she is funny though ) I feel Julia would only like me as possible child care.. Meg reminds me of a friend I do have in real life.
I'd like to be Kevin's friend as he is kind and inclusive. Mrs Lamb does need her own spin off show!
She is very dry!!

I thought Anne and her mum were lovely, and the very antithesis of Amanda and Julia. Warmth, kindness and laughter. Amanda and Julia seem to have such empty negative lives, although Amanda had a bit of a realisation.
Julia in the church and with the headteacher was so cringey!! Made me laugh.

NotSure94 · 12/05/2021 09:15

I agree it was hilarious that Anne's actually got the most impressive job of them all despite being the laughing stock of the group. I thought her character absolutely came alive this season. The way she gave careful consideration to whether she had or had not ever worked in Greggs was brilliant.

I hadn't realised Paul was the young intern in The Office! And yes Natalie Cassidy was also fab as the drippy TA.

They HAVE to make more and soon, it's just cruel to leave us without!

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2021 09:23

It's made subtle references to not assuming anything because they are a stay at home mum ( they have had great jobs and careers in the past , so show some respect people !! ) to how shallow and self absorbed people can be too.

OP posts:
coffeefi · 12/05/2021 11:02

This was brilliant

I binged watched them all and want to watch again

Absofruitly · 12/05/2021 11:48

I just loved the Mother's Day scene with Anne and her 'mammy' in the cafe. They were just so adorable together. I know it was to show the contrast between their relationship and the cold one between Amanda and her mum, but I just wanted more Anne and mammy scenes. They were too cute.
I am also desperate for Kevin to find happiness with someone who appreciates his niceness and doesn't just treat him as a joke/embarrassment. #JusticeForKevin.
