Schitts Creek gets better, right?...

Hi,

So we've only watched the first episode, but so far I'm not feeling it.

The (grown up) children are a bit "try hard" in their comedy, but I'm really hoping it gets better, as everyone else seems to love it and I was really looking forward to it.

I binged it and finished it at the weekend, it was lovely - i did not expect to get so invested in the characters.

I howled at “a little bit alexis” and cried when Patrick came out to his parents.

I would totally watch a spin off of alexis’s pre Schitts Creek adventures (short episodes, like 10 mins long)

Because the motel is free and Alrxis and David don’t have particularly well paid jobs? I don’t think Moira and Johnny are earning a whole lot either. Surely David used the 40k for the shop too?

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 11/01/2021 12:55

Tbh that wasn’t one of the suspend disbelief bits for me at all!

TottiePlantagenet · 11/01/2021 13:12

Tried it a couple of years ago and didn't find it funny at all. The accents, the schtick, nothing.

But I've now binged series 1 - 5 in the last week, I'm actually itching to sit down and watch series 6 as soon as possible.

I love Moira's weird accent (wondering when I can start calling my children bébé...), how can I modify my wardrobe to dress exclusively in black and white? And of course they're all so shallow at the start, but when they change and someone thinks they're Simply The Best... wow. The show has made me laugh and cry.

I've a huge crush on Alexis too, she's so so pretty.

I'm looking at some Rose Apothecary sweaters on Etsy but there's a fair few different sellers ... has anyone ordered one from there and care to feedback on quality/service?

Cocolapew · 11/01/2021 14:44

Me and Dh tried it and gave up but DD persuaded us to give it another go, we're nearly at the end of season 1 and really like it. Also I fancy David.
I was going out for a walk the other day and realised I was dressed entirely in black and white with big black sunglasses on and made DD take a photo because I looked like Moira Blush

Cocolapew · 11/01/2021 14:44

I've just ordered DD a sweatshirt too.

Tunnocksmallow · 11/01/2021 14:57

I really didn’t like the first series; but I loved it.
I’ve now finished it all. And I’m so upset. I hated David and Alexis at first, but ended up loving them.
I would say it is up there as one of my favourite shows ever.

@PerpetualStudent

“ I kind of went off it a bit around season 4 (I think), which is funny, cos lots of perople are saying that's when it's best. I found the Simply The Best epsiode horribly cringey and cloying (sorry fans blush) to the point I would skip it on a rewatch”

I feel the same! I actually like the earlier series better, when there is more contrast between the Roses and the town, I think it gets a bit too soppy and self-referential towards the end.

But then I like the 1st series of Parks and Rec best, so I might be an outlier!

I've just watched the simply the best episode. Soon I cringy!!!
SimonJT · 11/01/2021 21:02

Ah we loved Schitts Creek, so many laughs and tears.

I loved Ronnie as a character, she was great.

I unknowingly had one of Davids jumpers, the valentino one with a panther on each arm, it was a gift a few years ago.

HarrietOh · 11/01/2021 21:13

I’ve tried so hard to like this show but after several episodes I just can’t! I don’t find it funny at all.

Crinkle77 · 11/01/2021 21:52

Still finding Patrick passive aggressive and has the potential to be controlling. Sent David and Stevie that note at their 'honeymoon' dinner, bombarded David with texts and gifts to try to win him back, then when David went to the store to make it up with him Patrick somehow managed to turn it around so David ended up having to apologise to him. Just not feeling the Patrick love.

Tbh I have watched the whole thing, and while I liked it, it never reached greatness for me. It never broke the barrier into total brilliance, always just hovered around ‘good.’

Moira is excluded from this- pure comedy genius, she deserves all the awards.

Yes Ginevere that's how I'm feeling about it. I'm on series 4 and feel like there are a lot of filler episodes where nothing much happens. However I'm continuing to watch because I'm desperate for Ted and Alexis to get back together and for the madness that is Moira Rose. I'm going off David a bit. He's doing an awful lot of gurning and face pulling.
PaigeMatthews · 11/01/2021 23:03

I didnt enjoy the first two episodes then really got into it by the end of season one. Dh was more season two before he loved it. I kept explaining that youre not supposed to like the characters. I have one episode left. Im saving it.

ComDummings · 11/01/2021 23:08

I love it. It’s my ‘happy’ show that I just put on when I’m down. I love Moira, her accent, her clothes, she’s brilliant. It took me a few episodes to get into it but when I finished the series I cried. Although, I discovered it last year in lockdown and binge watched it so that’s probably why I had a strong reaction to it finishing. It’s not a perfect show at all but I just love it.

BrimfulOfBaba · 11/01/2021 23:11

I've watched half a season and haven't enjoyed it at all. And I love parks and Recreation etc.

esselllx · 12/01/2021 01:42

Are they making any more episodes HmmXmas Blush

Dizzywizz · 12/01/2021 06:55

No @esselllx, it’s finished now 😥 there is the documentary on the making of it, that’s worth a watch

Anurulz · 12/01/2021 07:22

Yes! I had seen the first episode and stopped. Then saw it again recently with DH and he wanted to give the 2nd one a go anyways.. that's how we ended up bingeing the whole series!! It gets so much better in a couple of episodes..

dayswithaY · 12/01/2021 13:31

I was ready to give up on it after a few episodes, even though I loved David right from the start. Then Marian Keyes tweeted the same thing and hundreds of people replied to keep watching until at least S3. Marian is now obsessed with SC, and Johnny Rose and she tweets about it all the time.

I think the initial problem is, it's almost purely character driven so you have to really know the characters, there's not much of a plot and some episodes do feel like filler. But because it's quite slow you do get to see the development of the Rose family and see who they really are.

SophieDahling · 12/01/2021 13:37

Oh god, Moira car shopping in her East end wench accent!

Juanbablo · 12/01/2021 14:40

It's pure genius. So funny and genuine. The David/Patrick love story is one of the best ever.

Anurulz · 12/01/2021 15:07

I think once you see the characters' vulnerability, you want to continue to watch the show.. that's what did it for me. The first few episodes themselves, you see the hidden vulnerability in Alexis fleetingly.. I don't remember whether it was episode 1 or 2, where Alexis is talking about her on and off relationship with Stavros, in tears, no makeup (she looks gorgeous in that scene) and David tells her to never repeat this to anyone she respected (how Dany made that funny, I will never understand) and she has the lost-child look on her face. That did it for me..

Crinkle77 · 12/01/2021 17:18

I'm just not feeling the David/Patrick love. I'm hoping I can turn it round.
