Schitts Creek gets better, right?...

Hi,

So we've only watched the first episode, but so far I'm not feeling it.

The (grown up) children are a bit "try hard" in their comedy, but I'm really hoping it gets better, as everyone else seems to love it and I was really looking forward to it.

They are very "try hard" and weird, but that's because they are entirely artificial people plonked in the real world for the first time!! I love Schitts Creek but I too can only watch a few episodes in one go because of the weird way they all speak. But yes it does get better and you start to see them as a real, loving family and not just the bunch of freaks they appear to be in episode 1, you have to stay with it though !

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2021 16:37

By episode 4 you won’t be able to stop watching

..and yet, as I said earlier I'm on about ep 6 or 7 and still not hooked.

fizzandchips · 02/01/2021 16:39

I hated the first few episodes, but it was so highly recommended to me by a friend who shares a love of the same books and films with me that i persevered. I'm so glad I did. I sobbed at the end of the final episode in a way you do at the end of a great book because you are going to miss it so much. I was alone in the house during lockdown so was perhaps over invested!

JovialNickname · 02/01/2021 16:39

The "try hard" weird speaking thing is because they've never had to actually be around or relate to each other before, hence the jaw clenching awkwardness!!

Cam77 · 02/01/2021 16:43

I’d recommend the Good Place if you enjoyed Schitts Creek. There’s a little bit more filler than Schitts Creek, but its roughly the same quality IMO and absolutely nails the season finale. I’m looking for recommendations too! Anyone?

Sexnotgender · 02/01/2021 16:43

@Saucery

I love the resemblance between Johnny and Twyla that totally passed me by until I looked it up and they are father/daughter. I was like, how could I not have seen that? ? Grin
And David is the son/brother.
Cam77 · 02/01/2021 16:44

@PuppyMonkey
If you find it watchable enough then I’d give it the first season. If it still hasn’t grabbed you by then, well, not for you.

JovialNickname · 02/01/2021 16:44

Anyone else really love the Roland character? He makes it for me, such a great foil to the Roses

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 02/01/2021 16:45

Up there with best tv ever for me (second to Sopranos).

It's definitely a grower but really worth it for how good it gets. There's a documentary too which is good after you've done the lot, you really see what a labour of love it was for the cast and crew.

Moira Rose is tv gold. And her wardrobe is mental and amazing at the same time. Grin

Simply the Best was beautiful. I also loved Fold in the Cheese and Fruit Wine.

HayJkl · 02/01/2021 16:46

Yes!! Keep going. Don't take it too seriously .. it's goofy and fun.

Yes but I wish they wouldn’t show him eating 🤢
JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/01/2021 16:47

So David and Twyla are siblings.

Saucery · 02/01/2021 16:47

Yes, but the resemblance isn’t quite so striking, I thought, sexnotgender

One of my favourite bits of it is all the throwaway references Moira and Alexis make to rl ‘celebs’ and all Alexis’s dangerous adventures that her parents were entirely unaware of.

bluebluezoo · 02/01/2021 16:48

I'm glad I saw this - I have watched a few and am on about episode 6 now and couldn't give a shiney shite if I never watched another minute, so there you go

Same here.

Saucery · 02/01/2021 16:49

I never warmed to Roland, tbh. Couldn’t shake the feeling the actor wasn’t quite right for the part. He never had the charm that would make Jocelyn love him so much, for me. I get that he was supposed to be a charmless boor but it didn’t quite fit.

Sexnotgender · 02/01/2021 16:50

@JayAlfredPrufrock

In real life yes. Jonny is their dad.
AnyFucker · 02/01/2021 16:52

I thought Jocelyn was great, better casting than Roland.

I love this series so much because the 2 adult children are almost exactly like my own. Personality, mannerisms, outlook on life, even their appearance. Everything.

DH and I watched it together and just nodded, laughed and occasionally had a little cry all the way through.

Deadringer · 02/01/2021 16:53

I watched a few episodes and thought it was crap. Maybe i will give it another go. I felt the same way about Santa Clarita diet, i wonder if that improves too?

NorbertMeubles · 02/01/2021 16:53

I hated the first episode and hated the characters. Watched the second and third and became hooked. I loved the people and it is now my favourite show w ever.

He's a good foil but I don't particularly like the character. Love Jocelyn though.
ItWasntMyFault · 02/01/2021 16:59

I'm up to episode 7 so far and still don't get it - but so many people have said how great it is that I'm sticking with it a bit longer

carnations23 · 02/01/2021 16:59

Nope!

I've tried several times to watch it but I find it very irritating.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/01/2021 16:59

Agree about Roland. My least favourite.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 02/01/2021 17:03

I gave up after 4 or so episodes.
I liked Moira, but found it so...... cold

It is. Until it isn't.
