Hi,

So we've only watched the first episode, but so far I'm not feeling it.

The (grown up) children are a bit "try hard" in their comedy, but I'm really hoping it gets better, as everyone else seems to love it and I was really looking forward to it.

I'm glad I saw this - I have watched a few and am on about episode 6 now and couldn't give a shiney shite if I never watched another minute, so there you go.

Trouble is, there's so many other TV things I've still got to binge, I'm not sure I can be arsed to "try again" and "stick with it.". Hmm

Tricerapops · 02/01/2021 16:12

I'm with @Squeakypotato, it would be good to know what other shows people who eventually loved it like as I watched an episode and a half then ditched it as it was awful. Trying to work out if it's worth going back to.

EngineeringFix · 02/01/2021 16:12

I thought episode 2 was worse and I don't think we tried 3!

MintyMabel · 02/01/2021 16:12

Same was true of Parks and Recreation for me. I found it cringey at first but ended up loving it.

pinkpetal2 · 02/01/2021 16:13

@Sexnotgender Same Ted was so sweet Sad.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/01/2021 16:13

I recommend it to everyone. Not sure anyone has taken me up on it.

I’m rewatching.

There’s a Ewww David hoodie????

addler · 02/01/2021 16:14

Same here, it took me two or three goes of watching the first several episodes while heavily pregnant and then I binged the rest, fell in love with all of the characters and cried buckets when it ended and when I watched the final season behind the scenes special.

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2021 16:16

(people putting the supposedly hilarious quotes on here aren't doing themselves any favours if they're trying to persuade us to tune in again Grin)

Snozzlemaid · 02/01/2021 16:17

Stick with it.
It develops into the most glorious show. The characters are just so full of love. It's bloody brilliant and so heartwarming.
I wasn't too bothered by it for the first series but I then soon developed an obsession with all of them.
I'm just about to start the last series, but I don't want it to end.

thenightsky · 02/01/2021 16:17

@ItmayBeWinterOutside

Place-marking because I have only watched episode 1 and it was one of the worst things I've ever seen. It's hard to suspend my disbelief that it can improve that much and I'm reluctant to dedicate the time to it.
That's how I felt too, but I gave it 3 episodes. I had to check I was watching the same thing I'd seen everyone raving about.
Mylittlepony374 · 02/01/2021 16:17

Love it. Hated first few episodes. Cried at "simply the best". Love Moira. Definitely stick it out.

AdditionalCharacter · 02/01/2021 16:18

Echoing everyone else, stick with it, it's an amazing show, wish I'd discovered it during the first lockdown.

Fold in the cheese!

AnyFucker · 02/01/2021 16:22

Persevere. It's brilliant.

The quotes aren't for the likes of you. Hater. Grin
PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2021 16:25

@MrsTerryPratchett Grin

Reminds me a bit of people doing quotes from Father Ted and Monty Python. Yes, yes, we know you've seen it...

Saucery · 02/01/2021 16:26

#teamstevie
Her story arc was the best. Simply the best Wink

CarryOnFestiveNamechanging · 02/01/2021 16:27

By episode 4 you won’t be able to stop watching.

Cam77 · 02/01/2021 16:29

Yes it gets better. The 4/5 episodes of Season are just “watchable” but it goes up steadily from there. Starts off a 6/10 and rises to a solid 8/10 IMO. I also like that there’s proper character development and story - they wrote the whole six(?) seasons off the bat so knew exactly where things were headed and how to get there, so there’s very little filler/pointless characters.

GuyFawkesDay · 02/01/2021 16:29

I fell in love with them all. The story gets better and better, I promise.

Cam77 · 02/01/2021 16:29

^should be “the first 4/5 episodes of Season 1”

SaintGutFree · 02/01/2021 16:32

Yes! I stopped after a couple of episodes as it just felt a bit 'meh'. I then was furloughed and binged the rest of it, the finale had me in absolute bits

Cam77 · 02/01/2021 16:33

The first couple of episodes are almost misleading as it presents as straight ahead sitcom, but slowly it builds into more of a character studies/light drama with plenty of laughs. Or something.

Saucery · 02/01/2021 16:34

I love the resemblance between Johnny and Twyla that totally passed me by until I looked it up and they are father/daughter. I was like, how could I not have seen that? ? Grin

SaintGutFree · 02/01/2021 16:35

@MrsTerryPratchett

The fruit wine episode makes me cry with laughter. But I thinks it's when Patrick shows up that you 'get' where they've come.
Definitely agree- Patrick really opens up the whole thing.
TJ17 · 02/01/2021 16:36

We were told the 1st one isn't great but to hang on in there and I'm so glad we did!

One of my fave shows to date. Got us through some tough times as a great feel good distraction this year.

Gutted it's finished actually, if anyone has any suggestions of a similar show?
