Is anyone planning on watching this?

I read the books and found them compelling but in a trashy kind of way Twilight meets Fifty Shades via witchcraft.

Not sure about the casting but I'm absolutely giving it a go tonight

Just watched it ... I wasn't convinced.

PawneeParksDept · 14/09/2018 12:16

Oh is it up On Demand? I wasn't convinced off the trailer to be honest. I'll have to wait til later.

It was on demand, yes. I've never read the books so was thinking Alex Kingston and Matthew Goode, what's not to like but it'll have to be brilliant in the first 10 minutes next week for me to keep on with it.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 14/09/2018 12:24

I've seen the adverts for this continuously over the past 2 weeks, if I'm honest it looks crap. If you cannot engage viewers with a 60 second advert then the content of the program is likely to be very poor.

Atlantea · 14/09/2018 16:48

you can watch it here on the Radio Times website (legit!!)

www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2018-09-14/watch-episode-1-sky-a-discovery-of-witches-stream-free/

comeagainforbigfudge · 14/09/2018 17:02

I watched this earlier as well. Purely because alex kingston was in it, so thought it must be good if she agreed to it.

It was ok. Very much a setting the scene type episode, i will give a shot next week though as i do like a witchy/vampire/demon type storyline Grin

Figgygal · 14/09/2018 17:03

It looks shite but love Matthew Goode so will give it a go

PawneeParksDept · 14/09/2018 17:45

So I've seen it now and yes, it will have to improve dramatically.

Not in the same league as Eastenders level shit, but certainly not of the high production value shows that many of the cast have been in either.

Standing out as particularly shit was the actress who plays Molly in Sherlock. Dreadful acting and a ludicrous wig.

I don't remember that character having a massive part, but I may have just forgotten

I’m just watching the start (live). God, the book series was such a guilty pleasure. And yes, Twilight for adults. But I can’t resost watching this. Esp with a glass of wine or three in hand. And I’m enjoying how good Oxford looks.

Somerville · 14/09/2018 21:06

Yes first glimpse of Louise Brierly - I’d heard they had made that part bigger. But her wig - WTF?!

Somerville · 14/09/2018 21:07

God, the exposition is so clunky. “Not keen on magic. Not after what happened to my parents.” Ugh.

PawneeParksDept · 14/09/2018 21:07

Spectacularly bad and her reaction shots when Diana can't see her are from the Joey Tribbani School Of Acting

OP posts:
Namelesswonder · 14/09/2018 21:08

The book was brilliant, I hope this is as good.

TheThirdOfHerName · 14/09/2018 21:09

I enjoyed the books, so will give it a try.

Somerville · 14/09/2018 21:09

Joey School of Acting Grin

I reckon it’ll improve if I pour a wee bit more wine

Somerville · 14/09/2018 21:12

Oh dear, everyone is dazed and confused from the Palinpest being touched.

Hushnownobodycares · 14/09/2018 21:13

The books are appallingly mawkish shite.

Was amazed anyone published them let alone immortalising one on film but might give it a go to see if it translates to another medium doubt it.

Somerville · 14/09/2018 21:14

This needs a bit more nuance and subtlety, aye?

Somerville · 14/09/2018 21:16

Nah, Hush, if the mawkishness bothered you in the book then I reckon you’ll find this even more sickly and sentimental. Grin

WeShouldOpenABar · 14/09/2018 21:18

It's so clunky, I remembered liking the books but not remembering why, then when it started I remembered it was vampires and witches meets mills and boone Blush

PawneeParksDept · 14/09/2018 21:24

Now Starring : Alex Kingston's unconvincing American accent

OP posts:
PawneeParksDept · 14/09/2018 21:26

The problem is the dialogue I think

It's like a car horn honking

OP posts:
Theimpossiblegirl · 14/09/2018 21:29

Just as crap as the book. I very rarely give up on a book but couldn't finish this one. Thought I'd give the tv show a go but it's not very good.

Somerville · 14/09/2018 21:37

It’s worse than the book, so far.
I enjoyed the book because whoever recced it (someone on here, don’t remember who) said think of it as Twilight fanfic. Since I rather like some Twilight fanfic (certainly much more than the originals) that worked for me. Also I got them from the library so hadn’t paid to read them.

The TV series could have been an improvement. But yes, clunky clunky clunky so it’s hard to suspend disbelief and believe a moment of it.

Somerville · 14/09/2018 21:44

Matthew Goode who looks weird in this thing, doing that constipated vampire expression.
