Is anyone planning on watching this?

I read the books and found them compelling but in a trashy kind of way Twilight meets Fifty Shades via witchcraft.

Not sure about the casting but I'm absolutely giving it a go tonight

The scene where Peter & co come into library seeking the book, Sean tells them to get out & Peter floors him.

Diana gets really angry, you see her turn away for a good few seconds. I thought, she's going to turn around go mad face looking wild, stuffs gonna start happening - but No - talk about anti-climax. Facial expression barely changed, not much happened really.

If she's a very powerful witch supposedly, she is spectacularly underplaying it.

I guess it's just going to be a witch and vampire love story then.

She's just too ordinary as a lead character

sparklelike · 03/10/2018 07:35

She gets more powerful as things go on, she learns to use her magic

ShinyElena · 03/10/2018 11:54

The whole storyline of the first book is about finding out why she cannot do even basic spells like lighting a candle.

MymbleClement · 04/10/2018 13:43

It's utter tosh but v enjoyable.

That kiss! It gave me a hot flush Grin

AdventuringThroughLife · 04/10/2018 14:32

Gosh yes, that kiss!! I would be happy to watch some x rated interaction.... Blush

DobbyLovesSocks · 04/10/2018 21:49

I'm currently on episode 3 and I love it. Definitely twilight meets 50 shades. Brilliant

DurtySarf · 05/10/2018 09:02

Finally managed to watch the third episode last night.

I am feeling the Matthew Goode love.

But can I express my appreciation of the art direction/cinematography?

I love how the colours are all browns and blues. The light brown of the Oxford buildings. The sky blue of Diana's clothes. The midnight blue of Matthew's suit. The dark brown of interiors.

And I think they may have used some sort of filter on the lens to heighten those colours.

Beautifully done.

sparklelike · 05/10/2018 16:12

Yes it’s the wait between episodes that’s driving me crazy - funny how quickly my viewing habits adapted to watching multiple episodes in one go.

PawneeParksDept · 05/10/2018 18:16

I'm quite cheered that I find myself excited each Friday for it. Didn't have high hopes Week 1.

bakingdemon · 05/10/2018 18:49

@DurtySarf they're using filters to make all the locations look quite distinctive in a way I really like - the blues and golds of Venice are much more intense than the warm stone of Oxford. I'm anticipating Matthew's family home in France having a colder, darker palette.

DurtySarf · 05/10/2018 18:54

@bakingdemon yes, the Oxford palette and the Venice one are subtly different.

I haven't read the books so don't know about France, but guess we'll see tonight.

I also think they're doing something in post production to make Diana's eyes much bluer.

Spudina · 05/10/2018 18:55

I wasn't blown away by the first episode but I'm glad I stuck with it. Usually I wait till a series has finished and binge watch them so I'm finding having to wait a week frustrating! Matthew Goode is so fine. I watched Leap Year on Netflix this week just to give me another fix!

AdventuringThroughLife · 05/10/2018 21:26

His voice.....!

Im struggling to keep up with who the characters are!

NotANotMan · 05/10/2018 22:06

Ugh Alex Kingston's accent is distractingly bad

Fooferella · 05/10/2018 22:12

I think alex Kingston's accent is OK. I'm Canadian and she sounds perfectly run of the mill American to my ears. I wish they had made isabeau young, like in the books. Vampires don't age physically and she's supposed to look early 20s!

Matthew gets more delicious as each episode airs. However what we're wardrobe doing with him in that ridiculous t-shirt tucked in to his jodhpurs? It looked like it came from Primark!

MymbleClement · 05/10/2018 22:34

Yes Fooferella I thought the same about the t-shirt. Not a good look but I'd let him off Grin

PawneeParksDept · 05/10/2018 22:48

I love Alex Kingston and I almost find it actually upsetting how bad she's been in the last 3 things I've seen her in.

Wig. I can't remember what happens to her but I'm fairly sure she does not die horribly and imminently which is a mighty shame Grin

The two leads are carrying it

OP posts:
TheThirdOfHerName · 05/10/2018 23:14

Matthew certainly seemed masterful when he was dancing that tango...

AdventuringThroughLife · 06/10/2018 06:46

Uh huh. He can certainly lead!

costacoffeecup · 06/10/2018 09:11

The writing's clunky and it's an utter cheese fest. The dancing!

I love it!

ShinyElena · 06/10/2018 09:12

I really enjoyed this episode. Although it was a spoiler even for the second book. The current de Clermont 's identity on the Congregation is meant to be a secret. Will Baldwin be as dangerous as in the book?

They must have practised dancing forever. It was well worth it!

holycityzoo · 06/10/2018 10:35

Ysabeau and Marthe were a disappointment, I always imagined them with French accents.
I still really like it though.

DurtySarf · 06/10/2018 13:13

Just realised that the actor who plays Domenico, the creepy vampire, was also the creepy fiancé in the first series of Being Human.

Thought I recognised him from somewhere!

IFeelSorryForMillie · 06/10/2018 14:15

oh dear...........I can't watch it now, I've tried. But I read the first book last week(after buying again!) and am now 1/2 way through the second. Sept-Tours, Ysabeau and Martha are just all WRONG wrong wrong. plus the congregation already?

Shame I thought it was okay up until then, but even without 're reading the books now, Ysabeau Is just too off the mark Sad

NellMangel · 06/10/2018 14:25

I hated the book (only read first and was pissed off it didn't complete a story), so I'm not watching it.
