Victoria Coren-Mitchell - oh dear. Why did she wear that dress on the tv last night?

I am mystified as to why anyone with her money, and presumably access to advice, would wear that awful dress! It simply didn’t fit. She could not do it up and even DH noticed the very obvious VPL. Doesn’t anyone on Only Connect just say “No”?

You'retaking your different style choices to her and assuming that means she doesn't care. If I see you and I don't like your dress or how you look in it, would it be reasonable to assume you dint care how you look?

Oh, I didn’t even realise this was on the S&B board… I clicked on it from active. Thought it was an AIBU.

Having now seen the dress I'd say that ruched front around the bust is designed to look as though you're bursting out of it - there is a certain sexy 'look at me' about it, rather like those ruched-bum leggings!

There was someone else the other day pictured in a blouse with the same ruched front and a jacket over - again it gave the impression that it was too tight but it's seems it's designed to look like that!

They don't have to, but most do, and I'll warrant VCM is one of them. Whether she cares what anyone else thinks is another matter, of course.

Looks fine to me. Admittedly I'm biased against the instructions to "wear something flattering" as that usually means something dreadful.

I thought it was the style of dress- worn open with a camisole or vest top underneath. I didn't notice the VPL in the split second you see her full length, but I don't tend to look at women's bums.
She probably cares about fashion (massive con) as much as I do. Good job I'm not brainy enough to host OC, I'd get millions of complaints!

Yourconclusion that VCM doesn't care about her clothes is nonsensical. You're either basing it on seeing her wear this one dress which would be a very limited source of 'evidence' or you have seen her many times, in which case it would be patently obvious to you that she does care about what she wears because she makes very definite style choices.

You are at perfect liberty to like or dislike her choices but to feign confusion is disingenuous.

Lots of women choose to ignore standard style expectations for lots of reasons. Hopefully mostly because they care more about what they themselves like rather than the opinions of others

The dress was crazily tight, especially the bottom half. A size up would have looked great.

Preoccupied watching this as to whether VCM has a MN seal of approval tonight.

If I was her or any other woman on TV, I wouldn't give a flying f**k what other people thought about my outfit. We've all had moments where we know the outfit isn't quite the one, but it's all we've got and there's stuff to do so we just live with it and delete the worst photos. As for the observant husband, our family has me, three teenage daughters, two very forthright mothers/in law and one Downton Dowager-esque Grandmother who can be popping in and present for anything we watch at any time. If any of the men in our family happen to have an opinion (positive or negative) on the shape of a body, the fit of a dress or a visible underwear line they long ago learnt to keep it to themselves.

Does anyone remember the time years ago when VCM popped up on a Mumsnet thread to apologise for something she had done that was mildly wrong and which posters had been criticising her for?

I can't remember any of the details. But in my very hazy recollection she had made some satirical comment about MN in a column or somesuch. MNers thought it was unfair, and, according to her apology (which I'm pretty sure was actually in an MN thread?), she decided that she agreed.

Anyway, that cemented the idea that I have of her as a lovely kind and honest person, with the resilience and humour needed to make a sincere apology right here in the bear pit.

I do worry that she might be reading this thread, and I hope that the same resilience might mean that she is just chortling at all the daft criticism of her clothing.
