Victoria Coren-Mitchell - oh dear. Why did she wear that dress on the tv last night?

I am mystified as to why anyone with her money, and presumably access to advice, would wear that awful dress! It simply didn’t fit. She could not do it up and even DH noticed the very obvious VPL. Doesn’t anyone on Only Connect just say “No”?

No one would take a photo of her on screen.

Eh? What the blistering heck are you on about?

You’ve muttered on about this dress without including a photo. I don’t think there are any official publicity photos for OC episode 11-million and 2.

So the only way to get a photo (unless someone on the thread works for the Beeb or was in the audience) is to screenshot, or take a photo of, a playback on iplayer.

But you think it’s more likely someone photoshopped a picture than that someone (several PPs by now, in fact) took a picture or screenshot of the programme?

You might want to reconsider the brand of glue in your household.

The S&B board is hilarious. It's usually filled with women telling other women that their style is shit and dated but as soon as someone does a post about someone who's clearly a fan favourite, everybody's "shocked" at the disloyalty of women to other women. Bloody hypocrites

Did anyone else think the second wall was much harder than the first? Usually they’re pretty equal.

Yes!

SisterTeatime · 02/09/2026 14:06

What is the point of a Style and Beauty board if everyone gets all up in arms when someone posts an opinion on a dress?

Personally I think VCM can’t dress for toffee, it’s just an opinion, it’s not a crime to be interested in clothes any more than it is to be uninterested in them.

Again - there are millions of posters on MN.

If you are going to accuse people on this thread of being bloody hypocrites, can you back that up with instances of specific posters here who are defending VCM, criticising other celebrity dresses on other threads?

Marellain · 02/09/2026 14:09

Perhaps she buys her own clothes, and doesn’t have a stylist. Could be she’s a real person who is successful in the media, rather than a media person pretending to be clever…

electrichabanero · 02/09/2026 14:09

VCM is, in my experience, not particularly pleasant in real life, and certainly someone who wouldn't be rushing to support other women like we're being exhorted to on this thread.

JaneJeffer · 02/09/2026 14:11

Jesus some people on here need to watch their blood pressure

heartsinvisiblefury · 02/09/2026 14:12

I love that she wears what she wants and doesn't give a fuck if other people don't like it. I think she's fabulous.

Please quote a poster who's told a woman her style is shit and dated and also posted here about shocking disloyalty to women.

Famous people never are, are they? I suspect it makes people feel special to have some personal negative experience to report about someone largely well thought of. True or not.

@GlensHutchisonsRobertsonsStephek
It is possible to comment without it being “bitchy”. The photo doesn’t show the VPL (it was very obvious)!or the fact it didn’t go over her bust. That photo is photoshopped!

@Chucklebunnie Yes, but why doesn’t she wear something flattering? I’m mystified as to why not.

I'm mystified as to why you think she owes you 'flattering'? Get over yourself!

There’s always these kinds of comments about 90% of well known people mentioned. Being in the media doesn’t mean you’re angelic and should behave like the Queen at all times. Does anybody actually think if they were widely known, every one would sing their praises whenever their name came up?!
you can’t please all of the people, all of the time, and it doesn’t matter.

I can't speak for you. I've met nice famous people. My experiences with VCM weren't so nice - I'm hardly calling her evil. But if it makes you feel better to think there's anything deeper than that in my comment, then go ahead.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/09/2026 16:21

No. She stands up for the board part of it.

I meant my DH is not caring that much about clothes or what women look like! However on tv it’s more noticeable. My question is really why doesn’t she get or accept advice?

Maybe take a little bit of advice yourself. Don't expect people to respond warmly if you start a thread about a woman's appearance or choice of clothing based on your own or your wonderful husband's judgmental ideas about fashion.

Personally I think VCM can’t dress for toffee, it’s just an opinion, it’s not a crime to be interested in clothes any more than it is to be uninterested in them.

And equally, as it’s an opinion forum, it would be weird if other posters didn’t respond with their views on what the OP has said.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 02/09/2026 14:45

@bigboykitty So on a style thread I cannot talk about style? What’s the point of it then. My opinion differs so am I not allowed to post? Are you the gestapo? @SisterTeatime I agree - no
point at all. The style board equals no style at all!
Anyway - I’m off and I leave you all to
your no style opinions!

MyThreeWords · 02/09/2026 14:46

VCM is lovely and really good at what she does (the dry humour, the poker, the weird mysteries of whatever the hell the Only Connect puzzles are about). I don't care what she wears.

Before you go, please post a candid photo of yourself and your husband. I bet you're both absolutely gorgeous and the epitome of style...

LlynTegid · 02/09/2026 14:48

I saw the episode and thought nothing wrong at all.

Unlike the disasters I see visiting my local high street or on some train journeys.

I bet OP's husband fancies VCM and just slagged her off to OP to keep the peace.

CreativeGreen · 02/09/2026 15:00

My main objection to VCM (and yes I KNOW this will be because they have to keep it a certain length etc etc) is that she does that weird wittery unfunny ramble at the end and I'm just thinking they could have used the time for more missing vowels, as that is my only time to shine.

Also I find her quite annoying generally and her dress sense is not mine, but whatever

GalaDinner · 02/09/2026 15:00

VCM is an intelligent woman who knows the value of a good pair of harvest festivals. "All is safely gathered in, Ere the winter storms begin".

Eminently sensible.
