What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:02

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

They’ve been unfashionable for so long (years) they might be coming back in fashion.

TamarindCottage · 08/03/2026 21:05

If you like wearing skinny jeans, just keep wearing them. Personally I never GAF what others think about my attire - it’s no one else’s business

Really?? Oh Lord. I honestly don't think I look bad in them? They're just jeans?

Well. Time to go shopping I guess. Why are we supposed to wear instead?

Nothing

CrocusesFlowering · 08/03/2026 21:06

I couldn't give a rashers about what people think. It's very freeing.
Wear what you like.

Drivingmissrangey · 08/03/2026 21:07

Why does it matter? I have, and wear a total mix of jeans styles including skinny. Nothing is as practicable as skinny jeans and boots when the weather is crap.

aster10 · 08/03/2026 21:07

I’d say they’re (or slim jeans) are the best to wear with certain types of chunky boots or with certain tops. And other jean styles look better with other types of boots/shoes. So nothing wrong, sometimes they even have to be worn :-)

Well you’re obviously happy wearing them so carry on if you like them. But haven’t you noticed lots of people wearing wide leg trousers and jeans?

I do agree with you, which I guess is why I've ended up in this situation! I just like to be comfy, and everything else is baggy in all the wrong areas. I (now suddenly ashamed to admit) actually like how try look - not just on me!

Yes, but I can't say I love it. Reminds me of early 2000s

I think they’re dated, as in the cool kids aren’t wearing them, but I love skinnies and boots in winter. Not sure what the age range is but they still seem to be around (in a practical way rather than making a high fashion statement!) among Gen X.

bafta16 · 08/03/2026 21:09

The whole jean thing must be making somebody millions.

BiscoffCheesecakes · 08/03/2026 21:10

If i didn't wear skinny jeans I'd never get to wear my long boots. So they're staying

Overtheatlantic · 08/03/2026 21:10

I don’t know. I work in a university and all the students wear wide leg jeans but I’m in my mid 50s and I don’t want to wear what they wear. So if you like your skinny jeans then wear them. One day soon the fashion will change again.

notmuchtoit · 08/03/2026 21:10

I still see loads of people wearing skinny jeans. The shops are still full of them.

I think the most unfashionable thing is fashion or at least fast fashion and dressing more sustainably is gaining a lot of traction … wear what works for you

It doesn't matter really. Not in the grand scheme of things. I just isn't know. Am genuinely surprised that it seems to be the known thing that they're outdated and here I am, just merrily plodding along!

I doubt I'll lost much sleep over it. Well, maybe tonight (I jest). But it'll have to work tomorrow as that's all I have for the school run!

I’m nearly 70 and I couldn’t give a toss what’s fashionable. I live in jeggings because I prefer a pull-on stretch waistband, and they are narrow enough to fit in my boots for twice-daily dog walks, and gardening.

In summer I like looser denim shorts rather than skinny shorts.

They look a lot better than those awful barrel leg jeans.

Yes - this is why I'm so surprised I think. There's always loads when I go to get new ones 😂

I never know what jeans I'm supposed to wear.
I'm 5"3 and a size 12 (down from a 16 before people start getting clever, yes I have more to go).
Not supposed to wear skinny jeans, boot cut, flares, boyfriend fit, mom fit, straight cut....surely there's nowt left?

I've been wearing skinny jeans since I was 15 , I'm 61 now, although I don't look it & I still love them. I think if they've stood that test of time I'll doubt they'll ever go out of fashion.

CarCarTruckJeep · 08/03/2026 21:18

I still mostly wear skinnies. Im not short enough to wear petite range clothing but I've found that everything seems to be getting longer in length than it used to be a decade ago?! As I'm frequently finding things that aren't skinny/tapered are now too long for me! This is exacerbated in wider leg bottoms obviously and it's just impractical, or costly to get them taken up. Where I live is very rainy as well so particularly don't want things hanging about too long getting wet and muddy so skinnies solves this. Also fits nicely in my boots like someone else mentioned.

Tortephant · 08/03/2026 21:21

Yea. Skinny’s have been out for a year and a bit now. Look around as you are out and about. It’s wide or barrel bow. Straight would be ok if you don’t fell able to go that far.

skinny will look particularly dated at the moment so even if you aren’t fashion led I would move away from them for now.
