I just started a thread on what to wear to my husband’s 60th party. Is this too young? It’ll be longer on me as I’m short

I think it's lovely and would look great on someone your age.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/01/2026 23:07

The venue sounds lovely. I don’t like any of the dresses though, sorry. I think the fabrics all look a bit ‘cheap’ and the shape of the first one is rather ‘little girlish’.

JoleneYouCanHaveHim · 08/01/2026 23:16

That Disturbia dress is great and will look very cool with tights and boots.

Picklelily99 · 08/01/2026 23:41

I'm sorry but I really don't like it. It's cheap and nasty. It doesn't even suit the model wearing it, and she's probably 15 and would look good in a dishcloth! *you've lost 3x stone and that is BLOODY MARVELLOUS!!!! I think you can find something so much better than this, spend a bit more if you can - you deserve it, and it's a big occasion. Maybe even use a personal shopper.
This is only my personal opinion - which you may find worthless.

Picklelily99 · 08/01/2026 23:44

Dame Joan Collins once said "rather mutton dressed as lamb, than mutton dressed as mutton!" Make of that what you will.

Yes it is!

i’m going to stick my neck out and say it’s a young woman’s dress - and by young I mean about 20.

It’s absolutely not a young person’s dress! 35+ I would say

babyproblems · 08/01/2026 23:44

Love it! I think it’s classic tbh so great for any age. Only downside for me would be big boobs - I think those tight shirred tops are really unflattering if you are ample up top!

Please don't use this outdated misogynistic expression. If you like it wear it.

Please don't tell other people how to express themselves. It's Orwellian.

What specifically about the dresses makes them not suitable for 60 plus women though? Genuine Q. Kylie Minogue is only 3 years away from 60 but according to you by then despite her still looking fabulous with an amazing figure, none of these dresses would look good on her which anyone with eyes can see is blatantly untrue lol

She's a showman. She's expected to look flashy. In real life it doesn't carry as well. And even Kylie is struggling a bit now. 😬 You don't want to be " try too hard" in that way.

I'm 73, big boobs still even after losing 2.5 stone recently. In terms if finding a style I've found it helpful to look for certain features in clothes then trying them on regardless of my initial reaction or the age or size of the model wearing it in the photo. So I really like the nobody's child dress because : sleeves, check; lower neckline that doesnt actually expose boobs, check; has a bit of a shape, check; colour that suits me, check; skirt length that doesnt make me look like a mushroom, check. I havent bought much because I'm still losing weight but I have to have something to wear! and I've managed to buy some of the most beautiful clothes that suit me doing this. Enjoy the dress, the party and the shopping!

No that looks fine...

Yes this dress is very nice.

The hobbs green dress is stunning! Classy, elegant, simple lines, but with enough of a twist to really turn heads! The dress you wish YOU were wearing instead of seeing it on someone else!

MarxistMags · 09/01/2026 02:42

Well I'm going say mutton dressed as lamb if I want. I don't think the sheep will mind.

I think it looks like a kid's party dress..

Twodogsonthecouch · 08/01/2026 18:39

Definitely not straight up and down. Small around the hips though.. bigger boobs so I thought the elastic top would work well.
Last thing I want is frumpy though. On the other thread I mentioned that I have lost 3 stone in the past year and trying to rediscover my style without looking ridiculous

I think the elastic top will do the opposite, sadly, with bigger boobs.

Get something more tailored on the top.

Twodogsonthecouch · 09/01/2026 07:28

Ok. I’ve gone mad and ordered the Hobbs one too. If they are both good then I can keep both. The Disturbia one isn’t as dressy so I think if it’s nice I’ll have plenty of occasions for it… theatre, drinks, dinner etc. Fingers crossed 🤞. Thank for the support and good advice.

It's perfect. Mutton can dress any way it likes! Not that you're mutton! I'm a bit older than you. But more important that you feel comfortable in it.

Dewberrywotsit · 09/01/2026 08:19

Not at all mutton! It is gorgeous. 😍

summitfever · 09/01/2026 08:27

I think given why you’re saying losing lots of weight etc this would do you no justice. I think a nice shift dress would be fab, maybe a bit of colour in it and belt round the waist. This isn’t the one for you op, you need something funner and classier that shows off your figure. Maybe like this https://www.freemans.com/products/freemans-x-sophie-ellis-bextor-jaquard-green-mini-dress/_/A-21S752_12?utm_medium=PLA&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=GS%20-%20Womens%20-%20Dresses%20-%20%5BPMax%5D%20-%20%5BPLA%5D&ns_mchannel=PLA&ns_source=google&ns_campaign=GS%20-%20Womens%20-%20Dresses%20-%20%5BPMax%5D%20-%20%5BPLA%5D&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20281769669&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI08blwIT-kQMVj5dQBh0-rw2gEAQYAiABEgIwSfD_BwE

Not seen it in real life but hope it’s nice.
