I just started a thread on what to wear to my husband’s 60th party. Is this too young? It’ll be longer on me as I’m short

do you like the dress, do you feel good in it?

If so buy it and wear it, stop seeking approval

IsabellaGoodthing · 09/01/2026 09:32

You would need to try it on OP. If it works with your body shape it could look good, but it doesn't look especially well cut and the fairly short skirt and square neckline would not flatter everyone. Nothing to do with age but it looks a risky choice to me.

Twodogsonthecouch · 08/01/2026 19:08

Thank you.. I honestly didn’t think about it at all. I’m nearly 60. My mother used to say this all the time so I just grew up listening to it and didn’t think deeply on it. I won’t use it again
I don’t want to look like I’m wearing something a teenager would wear though so the sentiment somewhat stands 🤯

Why shouldn't you use the expression? It's part of our English language and humorously describes someone dressed inappropriately for their age.

It's ridiculous to pretend that all younger styles can be universally worn by older people! I can only imagine my teen's face if I tried on her huge baggy tracksuit bottoms with a little cropped vest.

This dress is fine though and I think it could look great on you. Try it on.

HercsHeart · 09/01/2026 10:29

Why shouldn't you use the expression? It's ageist and sexist., @TabbyJane.
It's used almost exclusively to describe an older woman making as effort to look attractive.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/01/2026 10:35

It’s ageist and misogynistic and turns older women into unpalatable animals hoping to be still gobbled up by men. Women using it against themselves or about other women perpetuates an idea that women should be young and ‘edible’ or just give up and accept that they will never really be attractive anymore without artifice.

BrendaSmall · 09/01/2026 10:38

Don’t know how you are with sleeves but I do know they’d drive me nuts!

Floisme · 09/01/2026 11:26

'Mutton dressed up as lamb' refers to a old dodgy butchering practice. It's comparing women - of all ages - to cuts of meat. You are of course free to use it and to find it amusing, just as I am free to draw my own conclusions about you if you do.

This is not directed at the op who apologised.

I don't like the dress but then I see very few dresses I like these days.

JDM625 · 08/01/2026 18:34

Try it on and see how it feels/fits.

Personally, the photos make it look dowdy and poorly fitted on all the models. Unless you are straight up/down, I'd imagine the skirting on the hips will make them look massive.

Edited

Yes - it's more an issue of how flattering the style will be on your physique. It looks great on the model (I think) but it might be unforgiving on a shorter, fuller figure. I think you need to be flat-chested, , long of leg and narrow of hip to make it look good.

5128gap · 09/01/2026 12:25

Just knowing your age doesn't help in knowing whether this dress would suit you or not. Whether it looks good will depend on your body shape, colouring and the rest of your look, hairstyle etc.
I'm 56 and tend to think more, is this me? Does it make me look good? Is there a contrast between the cut and style and my mature features that jars (for me, this would exclude pink and frilly or teen fashion for example).
I think its a nice dress and would wear it if it looked good.

HercsHeart · 09/01/2026 12:38

I'm off to look for pink frilly teen fashion. Smile

Mature features sounds a kinder way to describe my looks.
I've been scrolling too much and no longer know what 40+ women are meant to look like, so many of the photos show smooth faced women with strange lips.

VictoriaEra · 09/01/2026 12:38

I’m around your age and I would definitely wear. I have similar.

OriginalUsername2 · 09/01/2026 12:44

I think it’s okay because it only shows off your legs. Try it on and see though. It depends on your figure. My busty friend wore the same top as me once and I was surprised how different it looked on each of us. She looked hot, I looked very casual 😆

abitgutted · 09/01/2026 13:39

I think it's a bit frumpy.

I would look on Vinted for dresses by Monsoon. You'll find something better I think.

wishingonastar101 · 09/01/2026 13:41

Personally I think it's a bit frumpy.

Catsandfluffybankets · 09/01/2026 14:54

Not too old but I think it's a very cheap looking and I'll fitting dress. Nobody's Child clothes are always baggy and shapeless. I suppose their look is poor orphaned waif.
We can help find something better than that im surely.

Catsandfluffybankets · 09/01/2026 14:58

SkelatorIamNot · 09/01/2026 08:10

This is a much better option in my opinion.

That is a fabulous dress, really edgy without looking a bit recycled teenager.

squashyhat · 08/01/2026 18:29

Please don't use this outdated misogynistic expression. If you like it wear it.

Women use that as much as men
Stop with the virtue signalling pretending to be offended by everything and everyone

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/01/2026 15:01

Oh and here we are with the ‘frumpy’ shite too. Lovely. Long live the patriarchy.

HercsHeart · 09/01/2026 15:02

@surreygirly , "The phrase "mutton dressed as lamb" refers to an older woman who dresses in a style that is more appropriate for a younger person, often implying an attempt to appear younger than she is.
Meaning and Usage
The expression is typically used in a derogatory context to criticize women who try to adopt youthful fashion styles that do not align with their age. "

And there’s the problem. Right there. We do it to ourselves (and that’s what really hurts).

BCBird · 09/01/2026 15:08

I don't think.it will highlight your new figure. Why not go to a personal shopper? I went to one at Debenhams for my 50th. The dress I came away with for my 50th was not something I would have chosen, suited me and was in my price range. Think they still do this at John Lewis.

HercsHeart · 09/01/2026 15:08

'Stunning' yet further reduced.

Elizabeth2108 · 09/01/2026 15:59

Its a beautiful dress. For any age range.
Little black dress, forever classic.
