I just started a thread on what to wear to my husband’s 60th party. Is this too young? It’ll be longer on me as I’m short

I don't think it is either. It is of its time. At that time, there was an older woman way to dress and a younger woman way to dress, strict social rules to follow. Nowadays it is socially acceptable for older women to wear younger styles. So it is an anachronism.

Now, "nagging" I take exception to, I think that is misogynistic.

It’s no more of an anachronism than the idea of nagging as a misogynistic concept. Look at the idea of scold’s bridles, of Shakespeare’s Emelia being told to charm her tongue. But mutton dressed as lamb is worse because women use it about themselves and each other.

I’ve just bought this one. I totally hear you about the age thing. I was not being disingenuous when I asked. I think though because I’m 5 inches shorter than the model and will wear it with tights and biker boots it will look very different on me. We’ll see.

I LOVE this one 😍

Better than mutton dressed as mutton!

Yes, those of us who have objected to it understand what ‘dressed’ means. If you like your,‘colourful phrases’ to be misogynistic and ageist then go ahead, but it doesn’t mean everyone should just accept it.

Considering we all know what 'dressed' means in this phrase, it is not always misogynistic or ageist. I will go ahead. Thanks.

👃😂

Some of us like Riverdance.

TreacleMoon · 09/01/2026 22:58

If it feels good on, please, wear it!
Whatever our age, we can wear whatever we like and if others feel it's "inappropriate" well stuff them!
The truth is, jealousy is not a good look on anyone! 😉

See I think that’s hideous. Completely shapeless and what’s with the weird feathers coming out the sleeves. It’s also an odd length.

Me neither

Thank you.. I honestly didn’t think about it at all. I’m nearly 60. My mother used to say this all the time so I just grew up listening to it and didn’t think deeply on it. I won’t use it again
I don’t want to look like I’m wearing something a teenager would wear though so the sentiment somewhat stands 🤯

Ignore the language police, like you I also grew up with a mother who used the phrase - she once went dressed up for a special night out, to a restaurant in her 20s (lamb days) where the maitre d' knew her well and he said 'Oh, Mrs Rogue, mutton dressed as lamb' thinking it a great compliment, lol.

RogueFemale · 10/01/2026 00:56

@Twodogsonthecouch As for the dress, I'm your age, also short and busty, so I know the problem. Shirred bodices can work with our figures, I have a lovely Whistles dress like this, but the sleeves of this dress are, I think, too heavy and will make your top look too bulky. It's all about balance, visual balance.

If you are 5 inches shorter then surely the dress will be out of proportion for your height. It’s not just about the length of the skirt. The smock bit with the harness is a bit OTT and will surely make you look more busty but perhaps that is what you want. I am inclined to agree with the poster who said your choices are a bit young for 60.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 10/01/2026 06:05

The Hobbs one is lovely. None of the dresses are particularly "young", IMO, the others just look cheap and not very well made.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 10/01/2026 06:15

And in my experience young women don't shop in Roman or Nobody's Child, nor wear smocked velvet dresses for parties. It's more Hollister, Bershka, Brandy Melville, Zara, Urban Outfitters and very small strappy dresses.

GreggWallace · 10/01/2026 06:22

No. It'd depressingly middle age

So depressing.

I’m 46 and have never shopped in Phase 8, Roman or Nobody’s child in my life. I go to Zara and New Look.

This is a possibility obviously and I will see when I try it on. In my experience though, as this applies to everything I see online as the models are always about 5 inches taller since I’m only 5’2, clothes generally fit ok, it’s just the length that’s the issue. I think the models seem to have long legs and I have short legs but torso length is not that dissimilar

There is absolutely no way I would wear that harness thing but as you can see there are plenty of photos of the model wearing it without it

Right!

GreggWallace · 10/01/2026 08:25

What harness?!

GreekHorse · 10/01/2026 08:38

The fabric looks too shiny and cheap, the position of the waist line will make you look as if you haven’t lost the weight, it’s a huge no from me

Do check out petite ranges, it’s so nice to have sleeves the right length and the necklines in the right place etc.

ArwenUndomniel · 10/01/2026 09:22

Disturbia also sells harnesses that you wear over a dress for whatever reason, and sometimes they style dresses that way in the pictures, but the actual dress doesn't come with it.

Well I’ve yet to see it used in any way that isn’t ageist or misogynistic.

Anyway Op - I hope the Hobbs dress works out.

ChristmasRager · 10/01/2026 09:42

I hate that saying - women can wear whatever they like and you should absolutely wear it if you love it. Congrats on the weight loss - you’ll look gorgeous x

Bikergran · 10/01/2026 10:04

It's black, it's got long sleeves, it'll be down to your knees, what are you so nervous about? Personally I'd only wear it to a funeral. Oh, and I'm 72, and wear what suits me, whatever "age group" it is aimed at.

DelphiniumBlue · 10/01/2026 10:21

It depends. I am in my 60s, and wouldn’t wear that dress as it wouldn’t be flattering on me. But I can imagine my very slight friend of the same age looking good in it.
