would you think this were inappropriate (minus the flip flops)?

Is it silk? Yes very appropriate, it's great.

WildCherryBlossom · 07/03/2025 16:46

I think it's great!

As you are tall and slim I think you would probably look amazing in it. The shape would look awful on me, but I'm quite smitten by these two (sadly out of my budget)

Size 14 is a small? I thought dress size related to the width of shoulders, hips and waist, not length?

Klements dresses are very oversized- it says on the website. I don't have any Alémais dresses so can't speak to their sizing

I was just making the general point that "you have to be a 6' size 4 to wear that.... which gets trotted out so often on here for many brands (Toast , Cos, Cabbages & Roses) isn't true.

FatLarrysBanned · 07/03/2025 17:01

But the model was nearly 6ft tall and a size 4. Do you really think that dress would look great on a 5ft 2" tall woman?

If I was paying £650 for a dress I wouldn't be expecting to have to pay for alterations so it wasn't dragging along the floor like a rag.

Agree, I never understood that 'you have to be size this and this height to wear it' trope. I mean, in SOME cases that's true, but not in near as many as trotted out here.

I'm myself 5'11'' size 6 and my mother is 5'3'' size 16-18. We don't own this particular Alemais dress, but a few similar/same cut ones. I look fine in them and my mum looks fine too, she just (obviously) needs a bigger size and the dress shortened (or a petite version). And no, she doesn't look like a 'sack of spuds' either.

For what it's worth - I like the OP's choice. It's silk, so won't look like a beach dress. The flipflops make it 'beachy', imo. I like the pattern, creative and different. I think with the right shoes, jewellery and a clutch/bag it would look perfectly great and appropriate for both occasions. I'd certainly wouldn't bat an eyelid at anyone wearing it for my wedding. I'm a rather flamboyant dresser myself and don't judge others. Although yes, I wouldn't wear white to the wedding, but that's about it.

I was making the point that in real life dresses like this and the Klements dresses can be worn by real life women. I'm 5'2" or 3". I have no difficulties wearing the Klements dresses or similar from Cabbages and Roses. I don't have Alémais dresses but given the amount of compliments I get for the Klements dresses, yes I think a 5' 2" woman could wear it.

I don't get hung up about the information on the websites.

FatLarrysBanned · 07/03/2025 17:14

"I don't get hung up about the information on the websites."

🤦🏻‍♀️ There is literally a photgraph of a nearly 6ft tall woman wearing it, with the dress around her ankles. My comment to the OP before we knew her height was that if she was a similar height to the model she could probably carry it off.

I maintain that a woman of much shorter height would not be able to carry it off, the hem of the dress would be puddling around her feet.

Are you reading any of the replies?

Here's more examples of "you have to be [insert unrealistic height] to wear that.

I have at least half a dozen C&R dresses and skirts. Their model is 5' 9". The dresses are pretty much the same lenghth on me. I actually wonder if brands have a "model version" which is longer than real life versions. No brand is going to survive if it only sells clothes for 6' size 4s

Cabbages & Roses
Cabbages & Roses cord dress

It's always brands like Alémais who get this sort of objection. Phase 8, for example, which is as mainstream as it's possible to be, uses models at 5' 10" yet no one ever says that about their dresses.

I would enjoy the very clear Schiaparelli / Dalí reference Grin.

I love it.

I knew Dali had a thing about lobsters. I thought Dali, not beach. I didn't know about Schiaparelli.

I was only looking at this specific picture of that specific dress on a 5ft 11 woman.

If you think a 5ft 2" woman could pull it off, that's great, go for it, it was just an opinion on that one, particular dress. You seem to be getting very het up about someone suggesting that it may be a tad long for someone of average height. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I thought more people would make the Dalí connection given that there is a stonking great lobster and the word ‘surrealist’ written underneath but many pp seem to have gone for a rather more literal interpretation… I hope they are equally strict about only wearing florals to garden parties and the Chelsea Flower Show Grin

excelledyourself · 07/03/2025 18:15

It's not my style at all, but I'd think it was an interesting choice and would have no issue with you wearing it.

But it would never really bother me what someone else chose to wear to my wedding or child's christening. It would my day, or my child's day, and someone else's outfit just wouldn't matter.

Plus I'd probably see the lobster and think of the Friends reference, and hope that you had too, hence wearing it to my wedding Grin

I think with the right accessories, this would look very elegant actually. Don't really get the beach vibe, it would be obviously a very expensive dress.

I think the giant lobsters and shells give it the beach vibe 😂

lizzyBennet08 · 07/03/2025 18:40

Honestly given your godmother I really think it's far too beachy for a church ceremony. ( also doesn't look the money ) I think.

I would be so pissed off with these photos if I was the parents. But I guess in a few years everyone can laugh about the lobster dress.

and agree for £650 you can find a much prettier dress

glitterturd · 07/03/2025 19:19

All I see is that lobster getting ready to squeeze a boob!

ExcessiveNumberOfNinjas · 07/03/2025 15:02

I think it's just too loud and attention drawing. For a wedding in particular, you need to make sure the focus is on the bride, not you and in this outfit it definitely would be on you, though maybe not for all the right reasons.

I can imagine people saying 'WTF? Who wears a dress with a giant lobster on the front to a wedding?' I

I agree with this.

Christening less so. People are quite relaxed in their dress at my Church, and, I presume, as the parents have asked you to be Godmother, they are totally used to your , er, somewhat eclectic dress sense, and would be fine with whatever you choose to wear.

But £650 for it ?!?!?

sideeyes · 07/03/2025 20:06

Thanks for all the feedback. A lot of it has really made me laugh. I’m in my 40s and in years gone by probably just would have worn the dress regardless, but I didn’t really understand social norms and now I’m trying to abide by the rules a bit more. I think I may have been ‘lobster woman’ many times in my life unwittingly. Perhaps I’ll just buy the dress and wear it for the school run instead.

I much prefer those two.

?? Or, buy it and wear it on a tropical holiday. That would look lovely.

beachcitygirl · 08/03/2025 04:23

It's lovely. I hate bridezillas - do it

FondantFancyFan · 08/03/2025 04:37

£650?!! I know it's silk but still the price is eye watering for an item that can't be worn very often.

As long as the weather is warm that dress could be worn to anywhere you just fancied wearing it.
