would you think this were inappropriate (minus the flip flops)?

it’s for three events this year at least…

I'd hope there's no overlap between the people at the three events. It's so distinctive, it could feel a bit "here comes the lobster dress again!"/Year of the Lobster Dress!

I agree with this. I really like it and think at 6 feet you can definitely pull it off with the right shoes and accessories - I like the chunky gold suggestions. I'm a big proponent of spending on high quality items and wearing them more than once and don't think the price is excessive, but... it's very distinctive, so if there's guest crossover, you're likely to be known as lobster lady 😅

If you are 5ft11 and a size 4 like the model perhaps you could pull it off, but honestly, yes I would do a double take if I saw that on a mere mortal at a formal occasion. Probably just to admire your audacity.

If it fits you, all you need is the confidence to wear it. Alémais make it up to a 16 and most women are not 5' 11"

Six hundred and fifty quid for a beach robe! You must be joking….

That was my first thought!! I mean...it's definitely a beach/holiday throw over thing, but WOW...£650 to throw over your bikini! 😱

Maddy70 · 07/03/2025 14:49

It looks like a holiday dress to me. Not an occasion dress

LostMyLanyard · 07/03/2025 14:51

Abracadabra12 · 07/03/2025 11:32

I love it!

Who are all these MNetters who wear silk dresses to the beach?!

Haha it LITERALLY depicts the beach...all over...2 giant lobsters, a massive fucking octopus on one arm, what 'looks like' an inflatable alligator for the pool on the other arm, seashells everywhere, 'sun, sand and beach' around the bottom!

Agreed that not many MNetters could AFFORD to buy a £650 silk beach throw over, but this is exactly what this dress is.

LindaLeggings · 07/03/2025 14:51

I don't know about inappropriate but you'd stick out like a sore thumb at most of the weddings and christenings I've been to.

One of my DC bought me a souvenir tea towel from a school trip that has a very similar vibe to that dress.

ExcessiveNumberOfNinjas · 07/03/2025 14:59

It's gorgeous but not at all appropriate for either of the occasions you've mentioned. It's perfect for wearing on a warm evening on holiday though.

You won't see me at that beach! Sounds terrifying!

ExcessiveNumberOfNinjas · 07/03/2025 15:02

I think it's just too loud and attention drawing. For a wedding in particular, you need to make sure the focus is on the bride, not you and in this outfit it definitely would be on you, though maybe not for all the right reasons.

I can imagine people saying 'WTF? Who wears a dress with a giant lobster on the front to a wedding?' I

keyboardtypo · 07/03/2025 11:37

I wouldn’t be happy if you wore this to my wedding or child’s christening as it is beach wear and not at all formal. But it would look okay on the beach.

How formal was your christening?!

Judging by the photographs it was formal.

TheOriginalFrench · 07/03/2025 15:11

rosydreams · 07/03/2025 11:57

You know - I cannot imagine how anyone could think those incredibly ordinary dresses are in any way comparable to the Alemais dress.

As for wearing it to a wedding or christening - absolutely perfect for a gathering of clans at the vast family villa somewhere on the Mediterranean coast. Would fit in gorgeously with the environment.

At a tiny 15th century village church in Wiltshire? Just think how many conversations it would start. Which can only be a good thing. I can think of other Alemais dresses I might choose ahead of this one - but that’s just personal taste. It would absolutely add to the fun and joy of the occasions.

A midday ceremony at a city registry office in Birmingham? Why the hell not? It would be particularly epic with a similar silk headwrap towering above the congregation.

TheBossOfMe · 07/03/2025 10:38

It's a holiday dress to be thrown on over a bikini for lunch, IMO.

Did you see the price of it???

£650

@sideeyes I have to say that I don't like it and I certainly wouldn't pay £650 for it but you'd probably die of boredom looking at my wardrobe😂😂

My personal opinion is that it's a bit weird, but I wouldn't be at all offended if you wore it to my wedding or a christening

justanothercrapbedtime · 07/03/2025 15:24

Id find it a bit weird seeing a lobster on a dress at a wedding or christening sorry. But then id find it a bit weird to wear it anywhere so probably just me 😂

Zone2NorthLondon · 07/03/2025 15:36

Thankfully I don’t attend events where such oppressive judgement, unsaid code and disapproval goes on
Guests are usually too busy with host and purpose of event to fret what other guests wear
And I don’t think 650 is wildly expensive

Toddlerteaplease · 07/03/2025 15:39

I'd think you've done in a beach towel.

£650 is wildly expensive to the majority on here, surely? That dress looks as if it cost 10 times less than the actual price!

OneFineDay13 · 07/03/2025 15:54

Definitely more for a holiday or the beach nothing formal

It's not a brand I am familiar with. Can dress length be stipulated as well as size?

As you rightly say most women are not 5ft 11". The model is showing a hint of ankle at that height. I would imagine it would be trailing on the floor and getting caught under shoes of anyone less than 5ft 6".

The Op didn't confirm her height of 6ft until after I had posted my comment.

Soontobe60 · 07/03/2025 16:04

It’s bloody awful!

sposabagnata · 07/03/2025 16:05

I would enjoy the very clear Schiaparelli / Dalí reference Grin.

I love it.

LazyArsedMagician · 07/03/2025 16:06

I think it's lovely, and if you'd worn it to my wedding I wouldn't have cared - in fact, I only cared that no one wore white or trainers.

But you know your audience. If the event is likely to be more "tweedy" as you say, then don't. You'll only end up feeling self-conscious.

The Klements dresses I linked to say
Model is 5 '10 uk size 10-12 and wears the size Small.

I'm 5'2" or 3" and UK size 14 and wear size Small. Their dresses are ankle length on me.

FatLarrysBanned · 07/03/2025 16:34

Size 14 is a small? I thought dress size related to the width of shoulders, hips and waist, not length?

piscofrisco · 07/03/2025 16:38

Fine for a christening if you are quirky in general
