would you think this were inappropriate (minus the flip flops)?

Maybe look for something along the Versace lines: bright colours, silk and beautiful draping.
This particular dress looks overly casual to me with the side split, flimsy belt (although you could change the belt and, if you are tall you might not need a belt) and cartoon pictures.
Melania Trump has worn some beautiful bright long kaftan type dresses, if you google pictures you might get an idea of styling a similar cut which would look lovely for a wedding or christening.

swingandtrampoline · 07/03/2025 13:10

Amazing, please please pleaaaaaseeee wear this.

Gremlins101 · 07/03/2025 13:11

I'd think you look awesome but I don't care much about dress code rules so prob not best advice!

notacooldad · 07/03/2025 13:16

I absolutely love it, and wonder now how many times people have been laughing at what I’ve worn to stuff.
I'm not going to lie, it's not my style but I wouldn't laugh at it.
I'm quite conservative on my clothes choices and don't want to stand out.

I think if everyone's dress sense is more muted you may really stick out, as if you have a neon sign saying look at me on your head and it will be really obvious in group photos. However if your crowd is a lot more casual and it's in line with your usual style, why not?

Rebootnecessary · 07/03/2025 13:17

I think it's amazing! If you are 6' tall and a size 10 you will look fabulous. Wear it with some strappy sandals and a bright clutch bag and its great for a wedding or christening.

Oceangrey · 07/03/2025 13:22

I'd think you looked cool and a bit different.

Onlyvisiting · 07/03/2025 13:23

Yes

Kahless · 07/03/2025 13:25

I think it's horrible, shapeless, and horrible material pattern.
It's very Timmy Mallet look at me

That said, I'm a jean and t shirt, plain boring type of person so...

Onlyvisiting · 07/03/2025 13:27

Sorry, I don't like it at all, but that I'd personal taste. I also just think it Is all wrong for either event, especially as a godmother.

They might be casual events, but I'd still expect more 'smart work' casual than friends bbq/holiday on the beach casual if it was me.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/03/2025 13:45

I wouldn't be happy if you rocked up to my wedding or child's christening in that. Beach party, yes. Anything else, no.

FunnysInLaJardin · 07/03/2025 13:50

amazing how many people on here either care what others think and/or judge other peoples clothes.

Since I don't give a shit about either I would definitely wear it if it suited me

BitOutOfPractice · 07/03/2025 13:53

What does the writing say? Is it writing?

Mizztikle · 07/03/2025 13:58

I don't think its inappropriate at all. If I saw you in that dress I'd think you were probably someone I could have an interesting conversation with. Great conversation starter.

I think the issue is more whether the dress is appropriate for a religious ceremony in a church. Wanting to be sure that you are not dressed in a way to cause offence in a religious setting is different to not caring about what people think or whether they would judge.

rosemarble · 07/03/2025 14:04

rosemarble · 07/03/2025 12:52

How tall are you OP? The model is 5' 11".
In answer to your question - I would be happy for my guests to wear whatever they wished to my wedding, as long as if it was in a church they were respectful of that. For a Christening, I'm not so sure - the massive lobster on the chest seems a bit frivolous for a religious ceremony. But I wouldn't mind - it's not like you're showing your arse!

I see you are 6' and slim - I think you'll look great in it.
My other comments remain.

CheesePlantBoxes · 07/03/2025 14:05

Love the dress but think it's the wrong choice.

Its not your event and so I think dressing more conventionally is more appropriate (and I say this as someone with a wardrobe full of bold abstract full length clothes)

newkettleandtoaster · 07/03/2025 14:07

650 quid though

I never knew sealife and pegasus's were offensive to any religion.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/03/2025 14:10

Generally I would err on the casual side compared to a lot of the recommended outfits on here eg I see nothing wrong with a cotton summer dress for either event. But not this. I don't even like it for beach wear with the high neck. The fabric would be good for a kimono/robe or maybe as it is with a deep V neck. But not for a wedding/christening, and definitely not for £650.

Whoarethoseguys · 07/03/2025 14:14

TheBossOfMe · 07/03/2025 10:38

It's a holiday dress to be thrown on over a bikini for lunch, IMO.

I wouldn't spend £650 pound on a dress just to throw on at the beach!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/03/2025 14:19

But sure. Boggle at the price if it makes you feel good and then buy something from Shein before it goes into landfill.

Don't be silly @PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat There is a world of difference between a polyester dress from Shein for £5 and the one posted for £650, and many, many clothing brands which sell such items.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 07/03/2025 14:19

I'd think it was fabulous and would probably ask you if it was Alémais.

I imagine they are not - as I said above, I thought the lobster on the chest might be regarded as rather frivolous for a church ceremony.
My comment about causing offence was in response to FunnysInLaJardin - explaining that I think there is a difference in caring what people think and caring about what is appropriate, which I think is OP's question. I don't think the dress is offensive.

mumzof4x · 07/03/2025 14:27

It looks like a beach cover up
Pretty though
Wear it to the wedding it's not breaking any dress code if you feel food in it
Its just unusual and not really in keeping with the formality of a wedding

Of course there is. It was a little light hyperbole to make a wider point.
