Has anyone else been in recently? I was in today and it was just fabulous - so many nice pieces - and not just the sienna Millar campaign stuff

@NoNoNoNotMe Flexifit knickers are very comfortable and I usually only wear cotton. In fact dd ( who is even more sensitive than me to texture and heat) tried them wants more ASAP.

Has commenting about M & S been, outlawed then? Ever heard of window shopping? Oh, and it's a forum, in case you didn't know.

There is a difference between saying that you don’t see the attraction and countless posts mocking the clothes and people who shop there.

I like their jeans and am probably the only person who likes the new leg lengths. I’m 5’ 4” and previously short was too short and regular too long, now short fits perfectly.

I prefer to shop in person as often something that looks dull online is better irl and vice versa.

Also, some people think it makes them look/seem middle class if they say they like Marks and Spencer clothes

Erm, no it doesn't. Why are so many mumsnetters obsessed with class?

I would never class m&s as middle class. Maybe the foodhall. But i class it on par with debenhams ... a shop where you can get most of your basics, uniform, undies, presents, reasonably priced jeans and t shirts. There shoes are actually really inexpensive. I have bought their loafers for work and for my daughter to wear to school for years. They are £29. I would expect someome who is middle class to buy basic shoes at Jones, Russell and Bromley etc

@Redlarge

Oh heck no! Shock Looks hideous with that footwear. Good grief! Who dresses like that?!

Me. Obviously.

RampantIvy · 10/09/2023 10:17

Should have been shut down a decade ago!

Why is it considered OK for yet another retailer to close and put more people out of work? What a horrible thing to wish for Hmm

I don't understand why people who don't shop in one particular retailer think it should be shut down.

I don't shop in Hobbs or Phase Eight for example but I wouldn't wish them to be shut down and the staff to lose their jobs

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2023 10:34

Yes to Flexifit knickers and their merino

WhereAreWeNow · 10/09/2023 11:28

I'm another one who loves the new longer lengths. I'm definitely not young but the long length is great for me. So nice to be able to get trousers that are long enough somewhere other than Next.

Bit of an over reaction here? The poster did not say she wanted it to close down. Here in the real world, if a business is not providing what people want they will....um, you know....usually go to the wall. Hard fact of life but it's true - why would anyone spend money in a shop they don't like or consider overpriced? Just to keep it in business/stop the assistants losing their jobs/and the no doubt highly-paid management jobs going south? Don't think so.

But they are providing what people want, they have been promoted back to the FTSE100

dressedforcomfort · 10/09/2023 12:27

@Tweedledeee omg, that shirt is exactly what I've been looking for for work!

Why can't M&S do 'nice' knickers?
I don't want Pippa Pig. I am an adult woman.
I don't want packs of hideously coloured stripes or flowers.
Or polyester mixes.

I want 95% cotton, maybe in some pretty pastel shades, or white with a bit of lace. And a decent gusset, not a 'landing strip'.

Don't know where you are but the M&S near me sell exactly what you describe. It's the only clothes I buy from them.

NatashaDancing · 10/09/2023 12:46

KnobbingtonKnobberson · 10/09/2023 00:02

People always seem so proud of themselves when they come out with that shitting and clapping phrase.

Isn't it awful? I don't think M&S clothes have improved dramatically but the opinion of someone who uses that phrase isn't one I'd give headroom to.

NatashaDancing · 10/09/2023 12:59

don't know a single person who shops in there for clothes. Not one. And I know many people of all classes and age groups

What ridiculous hyperbole. Apart from knowing where my husband shops I don't have a clue where any of my friends, relatives or colleagues buy their clothes.

I don't like M&S clothes -although to be fair to them the one I shop in is a foodhall and doesn't carry the full range. I was there yesterday and there were a couple of dresses I liked the look of from a distance but were shiny polyester on close inspection. There was a nice cotton dress which wasn't dissimilar to the Anthropoligie Bettina dress.

But some of the anti M&S ranting on here sounds positively deranged.

I actually said if a business is not providing... And if they had a track record of consistently providing what people wanted, they wouldn't have hit trouble in the past (which they have) and have been demoted from the FTSE100.

RampantIvy · 10/09/2023 16:22

I have no idea where any of my friends buy their clothes. I only know if they are wearing something that I have but in a different colour. In this case both were jumpers from Seasalt and White Stuff.

Redlarge · 10/09/2023 10:06

@Redlarge , just double checked that you were the poster who linked to the black jersey dress worn with flat black boots, and you were.

The dress is a plain, understated but eminently wearable and stylish dress and I'm sure you could find similar on Zara, Cos, H&M.

As for the comment about the footwear, that poster has just demonstrated she knows absolutely nothing about style or fashion.

I dislike big clumpy boots as well. Does that mean I know nothing about style? I clearly know nothing about fashion Grin

Not at all!

There's a difference between disliking something and not understanding that just because you (general you) don't like it and wouldn't wear it that it can't also be fashionable and/or stylish. From your posts I'm sure you you get that.

I'm not a fan of really clumpy tractor soled boots either but pairing a feminine dress with very contrasting footwear is a pretty well recognised styling trope- particularly on upmarket brands. So that poster saying "who wears footwear like that?" has shown she actually doesn't know very much.

daliesque · 10/09/2023 17:54

I'm barely 5'2" and the only trousers I can buy now are ones that are cropped on normal height people. As I'm also a fat fucker it really narrows down y choice of trousers.

However, the shirt dresses are amazing and I reckon I own at least one version of every one they have 🙈🤷‍♀️

Ha ha thank you. I bought it for work as i can wear it now with sandles, autumn with flats and a lightweight cardi, then boots, tights and chunky cardi through winter.

Im menopausal so i need layers ha ha. I think i will wear it a lot x

KittyBurrito · 10/09/2023 21:03

I just got their wide leg cords - lovely!

Palindrone · 10/09/2023 21:45

Hmmm...let's be realistic, how many M&S customers have a figure like Sienna Miller? Of course she's going to make the collection (and in fact any clothes) look incredible.

I doubt Sienna Miller has bought a single item of M&S clothing in her life.

M&S is good for food, beauty, period pants, and school uniform. I give the women's fashion a wide berth.

CyanCrystalViolet · 11/09/2023 00:18

@Redlarge I love that dress and boots style.

skippy67 · 11/09/2023 06:11

I don't know a single person who shops in there for clothes. Not one. And I know many people of all classes and age groups. Everyone I know would rather shit in their hands and clap than buy clothes from Marks and Spencer.

Weird that you know so much about where your friends buy their clothes. How many people do you know?🤣

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/09/2023 06:20

Even Sienna can’t make that putrid yellow outfit look nice.
