Has anyone else been in recently? I was in today and it was just fabulous - so many nice pieces - and not just the sienna Millar campaign stuff

I looked around yesterday and everything just seemed off a little. I don’t really see the OMG aspect to M&S!

It's called the 'Emperor's New Clothes' effect. 😆

Also, some people think it makes them look/seem middle class if they say they like Marks and Spencer clothes. (It doesn't!) Most of their clothes and 'fashions' are drab and old fashioned looking, and the quality is average - or below average. In the majority of cases, they charge WAY more for an item of clothing than it's worth.

I don't know a single person who shops in there for clothes. Not one. And I know many people of all classes and age groups. Everyone I know would rather shit in their hands and clap than buy clothes from Marks and Spencer.

It's overrated and old fashioned and overpriced. Awful place. Needs consigning to the history books. Should have been shut down a decade ago!

PMSL at the (few) posters on here getting personally offended at the criticism of the place. 😆Why are people so bothered? I can only surmise that they work there!

PurpleButterflyWings · 09/09/2023 21:39

It's OK @Britpopbaby but I wouldn't wear it personally...

AzureBlue99 · 09/09/2023 22:03

For those who used to buy Short length you are now Extra Short. Extra Short is not available in any stores, only online, and not across the range, just limited styles - which sell out because the choice is limited. So, they are excluding all the customers who used to buy Short. I actually don't know where to buy jeans anymore. I have a slim waist but big bum. I need to try stuff on in different sizes. Not possible now for my height. Who knew I am freakishly short at 5 foot 1.

DriftingDora · 09/09/2023 22:26

I bought a pack of two tee-shirts (using a gift voucher I'd had for ages) and the fit in my usual size is really loose, also the neck is too big and gapes at the front. The fabric feels like it will last about half a dozen washes before becoming a colander you could drain your spaghetti through. Now I know why I stopped buying there about 30 years ago....the quality's down the Swanee.🙄

TroglodytesTroglodytes · 09/09/2023 22:56

I’m 5ft 1 and buy short jeans from Sainsbury. They are one of the few places that still do a short leg.

I bought this in black for my DD for work . Normally she wouldn't look twice at M&S but I bought her some work trousers and this coat (coatigan) as supposedly black coats are "in" this year . Not too stuffy and formal
It looks much better in black or navy , if I bought a light colour I'd change the button.

They do the longer length trousers that she needs too .

She won't look twice at blouses in there though (Uniqlo or H&M)

M&S

Relaxed Single Breasted Coatigan

Layer up on chilly days with this single breasted coatigan. It's designed in a comfortable relaxed fit and fastens with a single button beneath the lapel for easy wear. Two side pockets keep essentials close at hand. Made with recycled polyester. M&S...

Goodness, that is a rather over dramatic reaction. You really don't like M and S do you?

I like buying clothes in actual shops. I won't buy online unless I absolutely have to. So many clothes shops have closed, so this reduces my options considerably. As a result I always have a browse round M and S as the one in Meadowhall is an excellent one.

There is a lot of dross there, but occasionally I find something I really like. I think their jeans choices are very good. I like their underwear and love my cashmere jumper.

There remains only a few other shops that I can look round. I miss Debenhams and all the concessions they had.

Lentilweaver · 09/09/2023 23:42

I guess a lot of us must work for M and S then. Beats dramatically shitting into your hands and clapping, I guess.

KnobbingtonKnobberson · 10/09/2023 00:02

People always seem so proud of themselves when they come out with that shitting and clapping phrase.

KnobbingtonKnobberson · 10/09/2023 00:04

Not my favourite place to shop although I definitely have a few M&S items in my wardrobe that I'm happy to wear. Would be a blow to many high streets if M&S closed its doors. Seems an odd kind of thing to wish upon it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/09/2023 00:24

I buy my sons workshirts from M&S , not because I'm trying to look middleclass but because out of all the shirts he's tried they wash best and look best .

You know there's no law that I know of that makes you go there . You could just , y'know , walk on by Hmm.

RampantIvy · 10/09/2023 00:37

Erm, no it doesn't. Why are so many mumsnetters obsessed with class?

User16328715 · 10/09/2023 00:56

Why are some posters spending so much time on a thread posting about a shop they never shop in.

Polis · 10/09/2023 07:32

I don't know a single person who shops in there for clothes. Not one.

I do. My husband. He makes a special trip once a year.

I like some of their stuff, but they size it too big to fit.

User16328715 · 10/09/2023 08:21

DH also buys quite a bit from M&S, the rugby shirts and chinos mainly, he used to shop in BHS but when that closed he changed to M&S. DH does not use a variety of shops or styles, he uses one shop and sticks to the same style.

Has commenting about M & S been, outlawed then? Ever heard of window shopping? Oh, and it's a forum, in case you didn't know.

Do you check your friends and work colleagues clothes labels? Just because you don’t know anyone who does, doesn’t mean they don’t! You’re a bit dramatic. It’s just a clothes shop. Some like it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2023 09:05

I think they still do men’s basics pretty well. DP has some nice chinos and shirts.

Some quite dramatic long posts for a bit of window shopping

My husband is the same. At least he is one step up from a friend of ours who refers to the local agricultural merchants as “his tailor”.

Oh blimey, there's a word count too.....Just so we all know for the future, how many words do you (a member of the thread police?) think are permissible?

SiobahnRoy · 10/09/2023 09:19

It’s hit and miss imo. Some of their dresses are amazing. The crepe tab detail wide leg trousers are gorgeous. Autograph has some
nice work shirts. They also have some good merino tops.

LimeCheesecake · 10/09/2023 09:22

@AzureBlue99 - I do wonder about this decision, making the average heighted woman no longer fitting their regular size, and slightly shorter woman not being able to buy trousers in store anymore.

Given they appeal to an older demographic, who are more likely to be shorter, and less likely to shop online, only catering in store for above average height seems strange, unless they are going for a younger customer (more likely to be tall), however the actual clothes they’ve made don’t reflect that.

User16328715 · 10/09/2023 09:29

I'm 5'10 and old and the regular still isn't long enough for me so have to get the long length which is alway online
