Has anyone else been in recently? I was in today and it was just fabulous - so many nice pieces - and not just the sienna Millar campaign stuff

I live in the EU and haven't bought at M&S in a while. I fancy ordering some of the new knitwear for autumn. Can anyone tell me how the sizing is these days? Thanks!

RampantIvy · 08/09/2023 10:53

I find arm lengths very variable @ZickZack.
I have long arms and have a supersoft jumper in blue in a 12 and the same in green but in a 14 to get the arm length.

In the men's I was able to buy by waist measurement and length which is so useful.

That wouldn't work for most women because if they fit on the waist they won't go over the hips. We are a different shape to men.

Yes, I'm lucky that this works for me. I'm not skinny either, size 14 in women's clothes and definitely have boobs and bottom but probably not massive hips and solid legs which is why men's stuff works sometimes. Tends to be cut to leave room for muscle. Though a lot of men have far skinnier legs than me.

'In the men's I was able to buy by waist measurement and length which is so useful.'

I know, it's hardly rocket science to do the same for women's trousers! I do have some mens trousers but some give you the appearance of a 'package' because they're obvs cut different to accommodate men's bits. It's not really the look I'm going for 😁

Inspired by this thread I dropped into m and s this morning. I bought some crepe cargo trousers. They hang beautifully , really stylish. BUT I had to buy short rather than my usual regular length. Lots of other nice things caught my eye. I’ll have to go back when I have more time.

User16328715 · 08/09/2023 11:11

I bought the brown wide leg cords last week, I'm 5'10" and bought the long length, they fit perfectly, l may get another colour as they fit so well

Missedmytoe · 08/09/2023 11:19

The only thing I buy in there is underwear these days. Their short length trousers are too long, and the patterned blouses look like the sort of things people used to wear when they worked in banks in the 1990s. Nothing fits me and it is irritating.

ActDottie · 08/09/2023 11:20

I love M&S and I’m probably a bit younger than their target market but you can always trust that they’ll use breathable materials for their clothes.

KevinAndHerKits · 08/09/2023 11:41

EarringsandLipstick · 08/09/2023 07:03

I was looking at this just last night. It's fab!

They have some lovely dark cigarette-style jeans, with a turn-up. (Now it'll depend how they fit as M&S jeans are notoriously variable on me. Sometimes lovely, sometimes horrendous).

Those are the Harper jeans. I'm meaning to get some but I really want to try the right size and fabric on - I can never find the right combination of size/colour/length in stock, even though I'm happy to jump
on a tube to any of fifteen branches.

M+S knickers are made for men now. Just check the (moderated) online reviews for them (if you have a strong stomach).

Are the trousers all made for men too now?

That’s been the case for ages. Last time I checked reviews there were a couple of people who seemed to get a thrill from describing their lingerie buys in great detail. No idea how they get past moderator. I posted a factual review about something that was shoddy quality and it wasn’t published

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 11:59

I don't get the knicker thing

My M&S knickers last ages and are soft with long lasting elastic

I've tried knickers from elsewhere and the knicker elastic comes away after a couple of washes or is so tight it has no give at all

M&S knickers every time for me

Lottapianos · 08/09/2023 12:02

'M&S knickers every time for me'

Same. I wear full briefs and they're fine

listsandbudgets · 08/09/2023 12:11

This is good to read. I'd basically given up on M&S as their designs seemed to be

a) Aimed at the very elderly or
b) designed by someone with a mania for terrible cut and/or horrendous pattern

They seemed to have dropped the basics. I will go and have a look as I need some new jeans and a couple of plain tops

I'm now boycotting all support of specific religion and politics by cynical corporations who don't actually believe any such thing they say, in this case gender-woo washing.

I don't personally support gender identity theory and don't see the connection to my M+S store. But if they wish to be religious or political, their choice. I'm not encouraging it.

Well said. It's a shame when corporations bring politics and other divisive issues into the simple process of buying clothing, groceries etc.

Even worse when like M&S they compromise the privacy and dignity of women and girls at the same time.

Namddf · 08/09/2023 12:22

itsnothingoriginal · 08/09/2023 07:10

But if its anything halfway decent, they've never got a 10 or 12 in stock 🤷‍♀️

...and don't get me started on the trouser leg lengths!! Even short is a mile too long for me these days.

Try getting a size 6 or 8! Virtually impossible.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/09/2023 12:40

BiscoffBear · 07/09/2023 23:07

Have they started making decent knickers again? Their selection has been so shocking and of such bad quality for the last couple of years that I’m trying to keep my favourite ones going until they either bring back the decent cotton low rise shorts that I used to love or I can eventually find similar ones for the same prices elsewhere.

The last ones I had were awful so I bought some from sloggi. You can get them for a decent price on Amazon or John Lewis. Or innersy

whynotwhatknot · 08/09/2023 12:42

havent got a normal m and s for miles now theyre all food halls

Redlarge · 08/09/2023 12:42

There is. Fabulous autum collection. I cant afford anything tho. 😪

Sarvanga38 · 08/09/2023 13:02

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 08/09/2023 08:59

Oooh, I'm going to be in on this I think, looks lovely - and proper cotton velvet, so unusual these days.

CyanCrystalViolet · 08/09/2023 13:09

I was also surprised during a recent visit. I went in to try on a pair of wide fitting boots which were, most unusually, fab. I then had a quick look around and found a lovely jumper as well as a long black viscose/linen mix (my favourite combination) black dress in the sale for £15. Can't afford anything else at the moment but they're back on my radar.

user1497864954 · 08/09/2023 13:11

I love M&S straight corduroy trousers. I now have them in four colours. There are certainly gems to be found.

peachgreen · 08/09/2023 13:13

Yeah. I had a £100 voucher for my birthday in July 2022 and haven't found anything to spend it on since, but had a look at the weekend and spent £500! (I won't keep it all, obviously...) Made such a change from the horrible floaty ditzy floral dresses in cheap viscose they were trying to sell all summer.

Okaaaay · 08/09/2023 13:23

@ladyvimes 😂 100% with you on that

DancingFroglet · 08/09/2023 13:35

I just don't get it, for years now I am perpetually undewhelmed. I can't even see their clothing as an 'it'll do' anymore, they're so thin, oddly shaped and a really bizarre take on contemporary trends - they fall short of nailing it every damn time, and the patterns, high necklines and odd sleeve shapes are tired imo.

They could have really cornered the mid range high street if they wanted to. I think they chose the race to the bottom. I recall a great fitting cotton tshirt a few years ago that sold well, and once they started to notice it's popularity it suddenly arrived in stock with 30% of the cotton missing. I presume they thought it would still sell if corners were cut to amass even more profit.

The sunk cost fallacy always bring M&S clothing to mind, for me. The shoes always remind me of the type you were embarrassed about wearing at school.

Thankfully, I love their food Grin

DancingFroglet · 08/09/2023 13:38

They always have weird and unflattering pocket placement on the rear of jeans and trousers, too. Almost all M&S jeans create the long arse, out of shape effect. Why oh why?

As time went by, they stopped putting pockets on their pyjama bottoms, yet still the prices creep up. I can't recall the last time I saw something lined in there either.
