Has anyone else been in recently? I was in today and it was just fabulous - so many nice pieces - and not just the sienna Millar campaign stuff

for fellow short arses who find M&S trousers too long now, I've recently got some nice cords and wide leg jeans from Fat Face, and the length is spot on for 5ft1 little me

MiniTheMinx · 08/09/2023 13:40

I went into M&S a few weeks ago for the first time in years. They have a huge selection of bras. So confusing. I've found the sizing odd. So, despite being a 32 and buying a 32 (E) the construction and shape of this torture device is obviously for someone with much much wider shoulders and longer body. I don't understand because surely if you measure round fairly small you are unlikely to have the shoulders of a shot putter. The flexi fit shorts knickers are fab though so will definitely buy again.

Years ago they used to have a premium range of cashmere, wool, silk, linen and all beautiful quality and classic styles. I still have a few skirts which I've had for 20plus years, but all require dry cleaning. Every so many years I buy an old man's lambswool cardigan from M&S.

Out of interest do they still have Peruna? I think the introduction of that might coincide with many people leaving M&S out of favour. It was dire.

PurpleButterflyWings · 08/09/2023 13:43

NGL I wouldn't be seen DEAD in the overpriced tat they sell in M & S. Awful place. Badly laid out, too expensive for the basic crap they have in there, and they employ terrible buyers who wouldn't know fashion and style if it fell on them from space.

Oooh, I'm going to be in on this I think, looks lovely - and proper cotton velvet, so unusual these days.

The material impressed me and I am keeping fingers crossed for the fit! I also purchased this, which again was tucked away on their site and doesn't come up when you search for blue coats, or funnel neck, so some work needed on their search engine! Treating myself as had a small win on the premium bonds. https://www.marksandspencer.com/wool-blend-funnel-neck-longline-coat/p/clp60607328?prevPage=srp#intid=pid_pg1pip4g4r1c1|prodflag_New

I go to a specialist shop for my clothes, and I am so teeny tiny, that even childrens clothes just SWAMP me. Sad I'm so small, that even though I am in my 50s, people think I am 35 years younger. It's quite the dilemma. It really annoys me, always being asked for I.D, always being asked what school I go to, and always being asked where my mommy is when someone comes to the house.

Screamingabdabz · 08/09/2023 13:52

“So odd that people spring up to decry shops having political ideologies and showing concern about safe spaces for women - but they can't let us have a thread about clothing without spouting off about their own views.”

’They’ are also potential M&S shoppers who happen care about women’s rights and dignities.

‘So odd’ that people ‘spout off’ about what they look like on the outside but don’t care about the integrity inside.

LER83 · 08/09/2023 13:56

I've always had a soft spot for M&S. Their shop in Newcastle City centre used to be amazing! I just really wish they would expand their petite range, its not just trouser length for me, its the shoulders, v necks are too deep, too long, sleeves etc! Sucks being small!

That's a bit dramatic

NoNoNoNotMe · 08/09/2023 14:51

The flexifit pants are 67% polyamide, 33% elastane, ie all synthetic apart from the cotton lining to the gusset, so I’ve avoided them for that reason.

Doesn’t that make them too hot and sweaty, especially around the leg holes?

caringcarer · 08/09/2023 14:56

ladyvimes · 08/09/2023 06:53

I really like M&S now and I keep thinking it’s got a lot better but then I realise I’m actually just getting old and it’s aimed more at my demographic!!

This for me too. 😂😂

BiscoffBear · 08/09/2023 16:25

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/09/2023 12:40

The last ones I had were awful so I bought some from sloggi. You can get them for a decent price on Amazon or John Lewis. Or innersy

Thanks @teaandtoastwithmarmite I’ll give them a try. I really do feel like Bridget Jones these days with my greying old but comfy pants! I gave the last new lot I tried from M&S to charity after trying on one pair out of the pack and they were sooo wrong 🥴
I find all the relatively comfy stretchy ones are just too synthetic and my nether regions get so hot and sweaty..!
The ones that are supposed to be cotton rich are just too thin and inflexible and cut into my inner thighs.
I struggle to find just the right combination of stretchiness and breathability.
Ooh - I sound like the Goldilocks of knickers!

Isn't it just.
I suspect that she hasn't been in an M and S recently.
I like M and S. Sometimes I don't see anything I like, but more often than not I do.

GasDrivenNun · 08/09/2023 17:21

On speaking to a friend of a friend, I told her I worked for a large retailer in their head office. She said that she had bought an item of clothing from that shop and it 'literally fell to pieces'. Seriously? Some people are such drama llamas. Do clothes just suddenly fall to pieces while you are wearing them? Suddenly you're half naked.

DwightShrute · 08/09/2023 17:29

I bought a pair of Harper jeans today, I haven't found jeans I like in forever. I got the lighter colour and will go back for the darker pair.

Member589500 · 08/09/2023 17:43

I have the Harper jeans and they’re my favourite ever. SO stretchy and comfortable I live in them.
Their knickers have been disappointing for years so now I buy nothing but Sloggi Romance midi briefs. They look like new after a million washes and v comfortable.

User16328715 · 08/09/2023 17:58

I must say that one of the Sparks 20% off would be quite useful for the new autumn clothes, I haven't had one for a while.

LovesJaffaCakes · 08/09/2023 18:01

Why can't M&S do 'nice' knickers?
I don't want Pippa Pig. I am an adult woman.
I don't want packs of hideously coloured stripes or flowers.
Or polyester mixes.

I want 95% cotton, maybe in some pretty pastel shades, or white with a bit of lace. And a decent gusset, not a 'landing strip'.

Yes I really fancy money off jeans, maybe trainers, and I'm also thinking about this dress (viscose not polyester - I'm not sure the photo does it justice).

'Having spent my life unable to wear any high street trousers, I'm grateful for the fact that some shops now recognise that women come in a range of heights.'

They should all be doing it, it's just not good enough to make women's trousers in only one length. I don't know why they can't just tell you what the inside leg measurements are, instead of all the short/regular/long nonsense

Yes no one else makes different lengths

I have to,buy short now in M&S

I've bought this last year and not worn it because I can't work out what to wear it with. What are you teaming yours with?

Darklane · 08/09/2023 19:44

I’ve stopped buying M&S knickers & buy Asda George ones now, find them better quality & fit.
I recently was in an M&S & tried on a pure linen sleeveless shift dress. Don’t do sleeveless but thought it would look nice with a thin top underneath. It was the weirdest shape. I’m a normal size 14, hourglass type but it was huge on the shoulders & waist but almost too tight to stretch over hips & so tight on the bust that the shoulders stuck up!
I agree about lengths being only 5 foot short, arms in particular as harder to shorten than length.

I loved this in store, ended up ordering it online and using clear pay. Hope it is nice on

M&S is a shop of two halves. You have the large new stores stocking reasonably nice clothes and they haven't oversized everything quite as much as other places. Then the old stores, often in town high streets, which fashion forgot and even when they do stock a nice line it's either gone in seconds or completely unnoticeable.

Their website is therefore vital and apparently their app is going amazingly well and a lot of their returns are through stores as its easy, quick and free. So they probably use the rubbish shops more as an online portal. I personally find the website a bit hit and miss. I've looked for things I've seen in store and it's taken me ages because they look so different. All those other brands seem unnecessary unless it's Jaegar which they bought.

I tried on a jumper in M&S at the weekend and then went along to Uniqlo and a similar one there seemed a lot better quality and was cheaper.
