Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

Wear whatever you like

BlueKaftan · 03/06/2023 10:01

I’m a middle aged woman and will wear whatever I like. You do you.

Groutyonehereagain · 03/06/2023 10:03

If skinny jeans are out why are the shops full of them?

WestHamAreMassive · 03/06/2023 10:05

We should stop wearing what makes us feel bad about ourselves

Muu · 03/06/2023 10:06

Stop wearing clothes and shoes that make you feel uncomfortable

MayBeee · 03/06/2023 10:08

Wear what you like , I don't judge people on their clothes.
If your asking what we don't wear ourselves ( personal choice ) I don't wear trainers , jeans , things with ripped / slashes in , cold shoulder cut outs , halter necks , jumpsuits , or high heels . Lol I sound as boring as fuck !

sherbertyellowteddy · 03/06/2023 10:08

My younger sister (in her 20s) said to me " skinny jeans are coming back in fashion by the way, so you'll be pleased"
Didn't realise they went out of fashion and hadn't stopped wearing them!

I'm also guilty of the summer dress with trainers. Normally I'd like summer dress with sandals, but pushing a buggy while rushing on the school run is only a job for trainers/pumps

IDontLikePinaColadas · 03/06/2023 10:09

Skinny jeans are back in, apparently, not that I ever stopped wearing mine.

Apparently it’s all about a statement skirt / t shirt combo this year, according to this article anyway https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/dc7016c4-f3ea-11ed-99c7-9412839daee7?shareToken=8fc80a4ed0fa57a47631ccc06c0b4ef4

But as PPs said, wear whatever the hell makes you happy/feel comfortable/feel confident - I really don’t care if a Gen Z’er thinks I look uncool.

The best midiskirts to buy for summer 2023

Who’s ready to get their legs out? For all that fashion types have been obsessing over trousers recently (hands up, I was one of them), they seem to have forgot

@VladimirVsVolodymyr thanks for that link - I might buy that today, it’s lovely! (Am 53)

ZaZathecat · 03/06/2023 10:10

Middle aged woman here. I love that look Vlad, it's very me, I'm not a midi dress wearer.
But op, at least the middle aged dress and trainers brigade are not wearing this current fashion, which seems to be favoured by the young

Kimchikeffir · 03/06/2023 10:11

The dress and trainers look is great, I don’t ever want to go back to the times where women and young girls hobbled round in shoes that cause permanent damage. Women look so much better when they are walking comfortably.

Peacepudding · 03/06/2023 10:15

In the real world a dress and trainers aren't out and won't be for a long time. It's a comfortable, practical and flattering combo.

Groutyonehereagain · 03/06/2023 10:03

If skinny jeans are out why are the shops full of them?

And why are young trendy folk wearing them?

Maireas · 03/06/2023 10:19

Ah, @ZaZathecat - the nude leggings which go up the arse crack. Some of our post 16 students wear these with a nude crop top. In my head I call it "the Lady Godiva look".

ginghamstarfish · 03/06/2023 10:19

My eyes! those leggings! You couldn't pay me enough to walk around like that in public.

Fashionotista · 03/06/2023 10:20

This is a sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek thread by the way. I am a middle aged floral dress trainers and skinny jeans wearer!

Maireas · 03/06/2023 10:17

And why are young trendy folk wearing them?

Yes but that’s in the real world. In MN world some posters are horrified that florals are everywhere and skinny jeans haven’t disappeared from wardrobes.

Middle aged people have had a kind of uniform. My mum's summer uniform for her entire life was a floral skirt, american tan tights, sandals and a white cardigan. My summer uniform for my entire life is a floral dress, bare legs, trainers and a denim jacket.

Will our grand daughter's summer uniform when they're middle aged be nude leggings and crop tops?

ZenNudist · 03/06/2023 10:27

Oh the one piece leotard thing in ribbed fabric or matt fabric, in brown or beige. WTF is that about?

I had such a laugh in a motorway service station. Young woman walked past in brown version of the above. Looked like she'd sewed ten pence pieces into the nip area! I did a double take then walked past a couple of men stood staring after her.

At least the look had impact!

Myjobisanightmare · 03/06/2023 10:27

I felt bad saying on here yesterday that the floral dress denim jacket wasn’t a thing in the north I must walk round with shit in my eyes in Newcastle yesterday there were millions

lampformyfeet · 03/06/2023 10:28

Stop wearing manmade fibres- they shed micro plastics. Go for cotton, linen, wool etc.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/06/2023 10:29

We should have stopped wearing tunics and leggings around 10 years ago - sshhh! I still wear them - so comfy !

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 03/06/2023 10:30

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea There are shops whose entire reason for being is to supply us with the legging/tunic (with pockets of course) combo - I'm talking to you Seasalt.

Cotton is pretty awful for the environment though, all that water and pesticides. A lot of the polyester is recycled plastic which can't be a bad thing
