Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

I’m confused as to where people are hearing/reading that something is out of fashion or a middle aged cliche.. I’m a bit unaware and roughly know what is in fashion via magazines/Instagram but don’t really hear what is out/embarrassing.

If it’s your own teenage kids your hearing it from I wouldn’t care, they all look ridiculous most of the time anyway!

fernilly · 03/06/2023 13:19

Though I don't think it's just a middle aged uniform as I've seen plenty of people from their late 20s onwards wearing. It looks comfortable so it's understandable.

I like knee or slightly above length skirts and dresses. I find them more practical for ease of movement. More difficult to run, if need to, or get tangled in the midi or maxi dresses.

Floisme · 03/06/2023 13:19

I very much doubt we'd have started wearing any of these looks of our own volition. The reason we spotted them and started wearing them, is fashion.

No question that there's a big downside to fashion, however I don't quite understand how we can claim not to care about it or be influenced by it when fashion is how this look came to our attention in the first place.

Kennykenkencat · 03/06/2023 13:22

I wear pretty much the same things as I wore in the 90s

I have avoided the floral dress and trainers combo as they look ridiculous on me.

dresses now are not designed for someone short.
I don’t carry a handbag. I certainly don’t want to carry my skirt or dress to walk.

I tend to buy mens trousers as they at least are sized with leg length and have proper pockets.

Too many people when looking at clothes don’t truthfully answer 2 questions. Does it suit me and does it make me look fat.

I hate shopping for clothes at the best of times.

Nowadays it is either clothes that wouldn’t look out of place on a market stall in the 1970s or clothes that are for someone 7ft 2” tall

My eyes! those leggings! You couldn't pay me enough to walk around like that in public.

I was driving along the other month and from afar saw a woman at the side of the road who looked like she didn't have anything on her bottom half. It was only when I got alongside I noticed she was actually wearing leggings. They are pretty horrible!

As for a nude crop top as well, well the mind boggles ;)

Well, obviously, we buy what we see in the shops/websites. And the shops are influenced by fashion designers.

We might see someone else wearing something and think it's nice and get something similar without getting advice from fashion magazines etc. I make my own clothes and follow/am followed by people who also sew and knit on Instagram. This is where I get my inspiration and I neither know nor care whether it's fashionable. Have a look at #sewover50 there's a world of different styles and some of them are me.

I wore the long floral dresses in the 70s and on and off since then, by the way, and still love wearing them now.

The problem with "wearing what you like" is that it is often difficult to buy stuff that you are used to and comfortable wearing, when outlets and shops are mainly stocking the latest fad.

I'm still using clothes from years ago. For hot weather I wear cotton/linen wide leg trousers, sometimes roll up ends light chinos, sometimes midi t shirt dresses. I don't really get the trainers with dresses vibe myself, so I wear flattish walking sandals or Toms espadrilles. That's my uniform for Summer!

Agree.
I know what I want to buy because it’s been my summer uniform for ever, but if it’s not in fashion then they shops don’t have it. Consequently I’m still wearing the clothes I bought 15-20 years ago!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/06/2023 13:29

I'm 58, Yesterday I wore a floral midi dress with trainers as I went out for a meal and Today I'm wearing Skinny jeans with a loose denim top( double denim!) with flat Mary Janes. as both suit my shape. I can't stand loose or wide Jeans
I don't even notice what others are wearing so wear what ever you feel best in

IglesiasPiggl · 03/06/2023 13:30

But I am middle aged and happy to be so. I look middle aged and wear floral dresses because I like them.

mainsfed · 03/06/2023 13:31

Anyone else also hemmed in (pun unintended) by hypersensitivity to certain fabrics/styles?

Just the thought of a shirred waist or cuffs makes me itch.

Comfort is the target for me.

Yeah it's partly what we see in the shops, but if you take that specific combination of oversized floral dress with trainers, denim jacket and cross body bag - I very much doubt that we all independently had the idea of putting those items together. We spotted other people doing it and we copied the look. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that, I just don't believe we're all quite as indvidual and as immune to fashion as we might sometimes like to think.

Sothisisitthen · 03/06/2023 13:38

I know this is a light hearted thread but honestly I just wear what I like! This means a lot of my wardrobe is quite old -I still wear pencil skirts to work that I bought in 2007 and one of the dresses I get the most compliments on I bought in 2012. I buy good quality clothes that last and I couldn’t give a fuck if they are not “in”!

Although I will judge anyone wear those cold shoulder tops. They are vile and should be illegal.

Flyinggeesei234 · 03/06/2023 13:39

Off topic but how do Zara sell anything from that awful website? So hard to
use.

I can relate @mainsfed . Agree re anything shirred, 3/4 elasticated cuffs, wool is awful, also polyester especially the ‘crepe’ kind. Oh and waistbands where you can feel the band anywhere other than true waist level or below. It concentrates the mind when shopping that’s for sure!

woodhill · 03/06/2023 13:44

Why are the waists so ridiculously high on all the dresses

YouJustDoYou · 03/06/2023 13:50

Same! I hate anything, anything that clings anywhere.

So what middle age women "supposed" to be wearing??

Dresses and trainers are nice and comfy....skinny jeans don't suit my figure at all (as in, I'm not built for skinny, skin tight stuff). I guess I'll just keep wearing what I find comfy, regardless of my age...

Mirabai · 03/06/2023 13:56

Groutyonehereagain · 03/06/2023 10:03

If skinny jeans are out why are the shops full of them?

They’re just a staple now not a fashion item.

Stoic123 · 03/06/2023 14:00

Middle aged here. Just got rid of the final pair of heels (both mid or high) from my wardrobe and will keep on wearing trainers with whatever I want. I wore trainers with a maxi dress to a wedding last summer. Curious looks when I arrived turned to sighs of envy by 9pm.

Never moved away from bootcut jeans as they balance my wide hips well so skinny jeans bypassed me entirely - and will again.

midsomermurderess · 03/06/2023 14:02

Middle aged woman here. I love that look Vlad, it's very me, I'm not a midi dress wearer.
But op, at least the middle aged dress and trainers brigade are not wearing this current fashion, which seems to be favoured by the young

To be fair she's got a great bum! If you've got it, flaunt it! 🤣

Yes! Agree with all of those, especially the crepe fabrics. Even turtle neck tops / jumpers are bearable only in the cold outdoors.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/06/2023 10:46

I think it was because of the shape of the loose dresses - ie a 'sexy' look is a tight dress and heels - a look that feels kind of 'wrong' to me now .

The strikingly asexual comment also made no sense. Asexual means
experiencing no sexual feelings or desires; not feeling sexual attraction to anyone.

or
a person who experiences no sexual feelings or desires, or who is not sexually attracted to anyone.

So whilst I concede that if you're a man in full on Tom of Finland your clothes might make the wearer look strikingly homosexual I'm not sure what clothes make the wearer strikingly asexual or strikingly heterosexual

ThePersistenceOfMammories · 03/06/2023 14:21

I’m either in a maxi dress or wide legged plisse trousers in the summer. Don’t particularly care what it looks like, I can’t stand being uncomfortable. I have sensory issues and can’t tolerate anything tight/lacy/velvet/itchy/fussy. Can’t wear zip/button up trousers or jeans. can only just about cope with elasticated waistband.

Leggings and a jumper dress in winter.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 03/06/2023 14:30

I'm a primary school teacher. I'm also very chubby.

I live in leggings at work because I spend so much time on the floor.

I now wear them when I'm not working, too.
Sssshhhhh. Don't tell anyone.
