Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

Yes, @Highdaysandholidays1 I often think that the wedding or event dressing threads are quite helpful. People give you all sorts of links - it's how I found the fantastic Wolf and Badger!

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 05/06/2023 20:50

I love clothes, am interested in style and want to look good. I like to discuss it on here and I like to get different ideas.
A person with no interest in fashion is not morally superior to me because of this.

Yes, agree. It's reminiscent of the gendered attitude where fashion is dismissed as worthy of attention (unlike football and cars) because it tends to be women who like it. Fashion is actually a multi-billion-pound industry, as a friend who works in the business likes to remind me, and as such should be nurtured and encouraged as much as any other industry.

Off to join a thread about TV so I can proclaim loudly 'I watch what I want!' at every opportunity

If you’re looking for a serious discussion on fashion and/or style then there are probably better boards than S&B on MN.

If we can't discuss fashion seriously on a style board then I really don't think there's any point trying elsewhere.

S&B is generally just discussions about Monsoon, Boden and M&S,

I imagine there will be other forums (apologies, I said boards) where you’re more likely to find your tribe and be able to discuss fashion without the distractions you feel you get on here. MN is a v broad church - you’ll get a mix of responses (including the ‘wear what you want’) and you can’t control that, all you can do is slim read past them. A broad church can be a good thing though - I’ve certainly had found some good brands through MN but I wouldn’t say they’re particularly ‘edgy’ (a word that usually crops up on here) or high fashion.

*skim read

No I'm fine. I'll stick with MN thanks.

You’re welcome.

No it's not.

Floisme · 05/06/2023 21:57

Hang on, I like the fact that it's a broad church! I like it that I can open the board and find threads about Holly Willoughby's outfit, Royal style, charity shop finds, what people are wearing today, designer handbags, wedding / graduation outfits, the latest Boden atrocities etc etc etc. The only kinds of threads I tend to routinely ignore are the ones about skincare (unless it's for sensitive skin) and nailcare because I'm not interested in those topics - but I would never complain that they exist. But equally I like to talk about what's in and out of fashion too and I don't see why that's unreasonable.

Maireas · 05/06/2023 21:59

Me too, @Floisme . I've been enjoying the ones about vintage wear and also summer footwear. Some good ideas. There is a huge variety on here, you're right.

Floisme · 05/06/2023 22:02

I am going to choose not to get arsey about the suggestion that I should find another board if I want to talk about fashion. But I think that means bowing out for now. Goodnight.

It kinda is. It’s certainly not about “style”.

It's more than just those - stuff like SilkFred, Roman, Next , ASOS, come up a lot. I don't think I've ever clicked on a link to anything from SilkFred or Roman that wasn't awful. Hobbs, LK Bennett and Anthropologie get a look in.

The brands listed in that wonderful thread about the demographics of clothes don't get much of a mention.

And then there's Nancy Mac...

We should have stopped wearing tunics and leggings around 10 years ago - sshhh! I still wear them - so comfy !

I started wearing these when pregnant and never stopped. My oldest is now 12 😳

InTheMoonglow · 06/06/2023 13:43

Most of these threads basically boil down to 'how to avoid looking poor or lower working class'.

Through my work I have lived amongst and met many struggling and impoverished people who are generally held up as examples of bad taste on mumsnet. I suspect a lot of WC MN posters are terrified of the association and so enforce their rejection of that via ridicule.

As for young people, where I am currently they all seem to prefer crotch length leggings, either with sweatshirts or cropped tees. Can't see that becoming a coveted trend on mumsnet!

In my old home town most women over 30 wear dresses, and the younger generation are a bit more urban outfitters atm with wide trousers and tiny corset tops. It isn't impoverished.
It is therefore quite easy to see that these threads are more about presenting as the class you aspire to, rather than innocent fashion chat.

Great post.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 06/06/2023 15:31

I wear all of those and I'm 28... I own them, they're comfortable, they're good for work or play. Hardly going to chuck half my wardrobe out. That's not sustainable.

You’re taking that doggedly literally because..?

I totally disagree. Many people who would identify as “working class” take great pride in their appearance. They may not have loads of money to spend but they always look smart and well put together.

When you’re really short of money your priority is food and housing not clothes, but that’s a different discussion altogether.

These kinds of fashion threads are just about fashion.

I think fashion has always been linked to different aspirations. Not necessarily always class.

"innocent fashion chat" sounds like something very gendered tbh

JaneJeffer · 07/06/2023 00:32

What the heck does very gendered and gendered attitude even mean?

echt · 07/06/2023 00:41

S&B is generally just discussions about Monsoon, Boden and M&S

No it isn't. There's a whole recurring one about Toast for a start. While some specific ones pop up, usually bemoaning Boden and M&S, other discussions, usually the ones where a poster wants specific advice, result in wide-ranging examples.

SaxSick · 07/06/2023 17:00

There's a lot of overthinking going on about simple chats about what people wear and don't wear.
