Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

i dress to suit my figure and my pocket

Weight of other people's opinions.

Mylifeislikeaboatrace · 03/06/2023 11:04

I've been a recycled teenager for about 40 years now and going to keep wearing my Doc Martens, with dresses, short long and inbetween, demin jackets and blue hair until I drop dead.
This is me and my one life and I've been the same except for about twenty different hair colours over the years, each more colourful than the last😁

I’ll be wearing the middle aged wardrobe all summer (I’m younger than middle aged) and folks in fashion can do one.

That said, I love the trend for linen co ords & on the hunt for one today.

Trouser or skirt co-ords? Nobody’s child is my current obsession. A gingham skirt and cropped top has been sitting in my basket for days. I’m just not sure how cropped the top is and how my not flat belly would look.

yes i always wore flats and a woman at work, said flats were frumpy
i have never forgotten that
so i am wearing the weight of others opinions, very good phrase

Willmafrockfit · 03/06/2023 11:05

i would like to wear pretty dainty sandals but they would probably a) hurt b) break

Definitely hanging on to the dress with trainers look. Normally find dresses in mint velvet but there aren't so many this year. Any recommendations??

Nobody’s child

I’m a middle aged woman and will wear whatever I like. You do you.

Frumpy? Asexual?
You get the term "frumpy" on S&B threads all the time. Really.
It just means that you're not necessarily dressing for the male gaze. It means that the clothing isn't skintight, or see through, or slitted, or you're not on teetering heels.
I'm glad women are dressing to please themselves. Dressing to suit their lives and their bodies.

I think it's less to do with the actual clothing and more an unpleasant shorthand for being older/fatter.

A willowy 20 something wafting about in a shapeless linen sack and sandals wouldn't be called frumpy, they'd probably be a fashion influencer. A short overweight 50yo in the same would get the frumpy label.

@Willmafrockfit

why on earth would they break??

judging by my past experience

We should stop wearing what makes us feel bad about ourselves

This 100%

thats unfortunate! They really shouldn’t! Maybe try again.

continentallentil · 03/06/2023 11:18

I’m sure no one said we shouldn’t wear floral maxis, just that they are dull - they are dull, but so are shirts and jeans but you don’t see men worrying about that do you?

Bog average clothes are fine, not everyone is super into fashion and there is a lot else to think about.

ShimmeringShirts · 03/06/2023 11:19

There is nothing anyone on this thread can do to convince me those are leggings on the bare arsed lady on the 1st page!

@Maireas

no it doesn’t

it means it’s old fashioned and not chic

Cotton is pretty awful for the environment though, all that water and pesticides. A lot of the polyester is recycled plastic which can't be a bad thing

But polyester is foul, feels disgusting and doesn't let air through, and static.

Middle aged woman here. I love that look Vlad, it's very me, I'm not a midi dress wearer.
But op, at least the middle aged dress and trainers brigade are not wearing this current fashion, which seems to be favoured by the young

I’ve had a dream like that before 😱

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 03/06/2023 11:23

Ha! I bought the jacket back in March.

Another vote from me. I cant believe people put this much thought into what others think about what they wear. Sounds horribly stressful. I wear what I like. I dress for me, not other people's opinions.

@Willmafrockfit

at first maybe. But your feet do get used to them. That’s what I find. I think it’s good for our feet to be able to breathe and not be in closed shoes all the time
