Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

It is quite a dated look. Not bad, just dated.

skinny jeans are a no though! Plus who wants to wear skin tight jeans in summer?! Uncomfortable

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/06/2023 12:15

If the weather ever gets warmer, I’ll be wearing midi dresses and trainers, because the dress is cool and the trainers comfortable. I’ll also, when appropriate, be wearing skinny jeans, cropped jeans, boyfriend jeans, or whatever I decide on in the morning.

Prescottdanni123 · 03/06/2023 12:18

I used to love fashion before love island came along. Now all the 'in trend' fashions seem to be crotch length dresses, shorts so skimpy they are practically denim thongs. I'm done with being in fashion. I am going to keep wearing dresses and trainers or skinny jeans. I have no desire to wear the trendy clothes that would have probably got me arrested for public indecency back when I was a teenager.

Starhead69 · 03/06/2023 12:18

we should stop wearing the weight of other peoples opinion

BrandyandGinger · 03/06/2023 12:20

My mother and MIL both ended up with hideous feet from wearing uncomfortable shoes all their lives.
In hot weather I mostly wear my floral dresses with Reiker sporty sandals. In cooler weather I wear my bootcut jeans with Nike runners. I want to impress 90 year old me with my good sense.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 03/06/2023 12:22

That's what happens when you dress for fashion rather than yourself. Always trying to catch up or having to sadly say goodbye to clothes that are comfy/you love/suit you because they're not in anymore.

i would like to wear pretty dainty sandals but they would probably a) hurt b) break

Me too, preferably in tan leather and with a bit of arch support, but pretty dainty sandals are hard to find with size 8, super wide square toed hobbit feet. Manufacturers seem to think that market segment wants beige velcro "sandals".

Tangled123 · 03/06/2023 12:24

I’m big boobed, short and have a flabby tummy. The one look I wish would die is crop tops and high waisted shorts/leggings. I can see the appeal for the gym/exercise but that’s it.

WoollyRosebud · 03/06/2023 12:30

It’s summer, I love to see a floral dress being worn and who cares what you wear it with as long as you are comfortable and feel good.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 03/06/2023 12:32

I’m liking lightweight, loose, maybe slightly cropped trousers this year. Plain or patterned. And simple tees. Plus midi / midaxi skirts, again with simple T-shirts. I’m keeping the denim jacket and trainers 😂 although I’ve switched out my white and rose gold converse (which were looking a tad dated) for pink on white New Balance ones.

I don't wear jeans at all.in summer I wear dresses or loose baggy trousers. I wear skinny jeans in winter because they're stretchy and comfortable. I'm old but I'm not fat and I don't care what anyone else thinks I should wear.

@ChrisPPancake dinosaur pumps! Please may I see a photo?

I’m getting ready for a pub garden lunch. Wearing my orange ditsy floral midi dress and converse. I’m hoping the sun makes an appearance but if not I’ll have my white denim jacket on!

Sounds like a lovely outfit and would be perfectly trendy where I live!

CornedBeef451 · 03/06/2023 12:42

I like the dress and trainers look.

I don't wear it myself as I don't like dresses and I have sock issues so if I wear trainers I also have to wear thick socks. (although that seemed to be a trend for a while it's not something I could pull off).

I hate shopping so I have just decided my 4 pairs of "fancy" pyjama bottoms are summer trousers.

I haven't worn them in bed and I have turned them up so I don't trip on them now so I am pretty happy with my new summer wardrobe!

I will therefore not be passing judgment on anything except the flesh coloured monstrosities above.

@ThatLibraryMiss have a look at a site called Anya's Reviews, she writes about shoes of all types for wider feet. It's part of the barefoot shoe trend, so instead of forcing your foot into a shoe that bears no resemblance to your foot, they're all for wider feet, higher arches etc etc. Just bought a pair of sandals from a company called Shapen, following one of her reviews. I have Hobbit feet. Almost square!

sunglassesonthetable · 03/06/2023 12:48

I see loads of people wearing a midi dress with ( usually) white trainers.

It's clearly very easy and comfy to wear. And probably why it's so popular.

Because it's ubiquitous does that mean it's fashionable or not fashionable anymore?
Puzzles. 🤔

Do I wear it? Not my cup of tea. But I've got a shirt dress I'd wear with trainers.

I don't get annoyed with people saying this or that is unfashionable though, because this is a S&B thread and people are interested. Don't take it to heart or as a personal criticism.

I wear things that are fun, comfortable and suit
me!
I’m short and dumpy and virtually 60 but my legs are not actually bad (the weight is mostly on the tum and upper torso) so I’m happy to
wear skinny jeans (although I also have “Mum” cut) with a top down the mid hip such as a big T shirt or leggings. I have also just bought a couple of pairs of shorts which I think look quite good on. On the other hand, sometime a top that is fairly close fitting can actually flatter more than an enormous “tent”. I will wear a floral dress or a simple T-shirt dress with sandals.
I like to feature the footwear a bit and have glitter trainers, multi- coloured trainers, pumps in a few colours but I rarely venture into heels!

woodhill · 03/06/2023 12:52

Long dresses or skirts are so much easier and forgiving

I wear chinos, t shirts or blouses or a longer skirt

Sandals

No polyester ever

woodhill · 03/06/2023 12:53

And those shift type linen dresses do not suit me

Middle aged woman here. I love that look Vlad, it's very me, I'm not a midi dress wearer.
But op, at least the middle aged dress and trainers brigade are not wearing this current fashion, which seems to be favoured by the young

Ohhhh my goodness had to do a double take at this one 😂😂😂😂

jays · 03/06/2023 12:59

Wear what suits your body type and what makes you look in the mirror and feel really good about yourself. Whatever makes you feel like you’re really being you. The problem with the white trainers/converse and floral dress isn’t that combo, it’s just that it becomes a uniform,(just using that as an example, nothing against that look at all) I think looking around for inspiration is good but looking around to see what you should be wearing to look like everyone you want to fit in with or be seen to align with is sorrowful. I think if we find our colours that suit us and find our clothing cuts that flatter our shape then we need to find the clothes that she us feel like us put a little strut in our step, and you can’t walk to anyone else’s strut so you need to wear what YOU love and you just can’t help but look good in clothes that you love.
