Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

I don’t wear thin black leggings with white knickers, everything else is a go for me. I do prefer flared jeans though as they balance out my hips and big boobs.

Softoprider · 03/06/2023 10:00

Wear whatever you like

Why do so many always take the OP literally?

I’ve been known to wear socks with sandals… when it gets hot, I take the socks off and pop them in my bag!

Mostly I give zero shits.

Middle aged woman here. I love that look Vlad, it's very me, I'm not a midi dress wearer.
But op, at least the middle aged dress and trainers brigade are not wearing this current fashion, which seems to be favoured by the young

Is she really wearing nude leggings ? It looks like she's naked.

I've never seen that trend

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/06/2023 11:46

BlueKaftan · 03/06/2023 10:01

I’m a middle aged woman and will wear whatever I like. You do you.

Exactly.

TheHandbag · 03/06/2023 11:50

You should wear what makes you comfortable, not what makes you appealing to other people. Other people's opinions don't count when it comes to choosimg what I wear.

mondaytosunday · 03/06/2023 11:52

Skinny jeans are a crime against fashion unless you are under 14.

GalileoHumpkins · 03/06/2023 11:52

The weight of what society says we should wear 🙄

Fashionotista · 03/06/2023 11:53

Maloneyb · 03/06/2023 11:25

Can’t tell if this is a sarcastic post or not 🤣♥️

I did say I was being sarcastic in a follow up comment 😬but in hindsight should have added that as a footnote in my op 😁

OP posts:
fernilly · 03/06/2023 11:54

I've never worn a skinny jean, but I don't wear jeans at all.

ChrisPPancake · 03/06/2023 11:55

Planning on wearing a floral maxi dress tonight for a date with dh. Don't care what anyone else thinks.

Teaming it with dinosaur pumps not white trainers though! 🦖 🦕

cormorant5 · 03/06/2023 11:56

With the colder mornings this last week, I was a walking demonstration of Damart. After lunch say about 2.00 it was shorts and tee for gardening.
The Times today suggests Maxis to be floor length.

Realistically pavement sweeping length. Then I can catch my kitten heel in the hem and go base over apex at the bus stop.
Floral button through midi + trainers seem very attractive.

Myjobisanightmare · 03/06/2023 10:27

I felt bad saying on here yesterday that the floral dress denim jacket wasn’t a thing in the north I must walk round with shit in my eyes in Newcastle yesterday there were millions

You are all too hard up there to wear a jacket!

mainsfed · 03/06/2023 11:56

I wish I still had a skinny gene.

PumpkinSpiceLattePlease · 03/06/2023 11:57

We should stop wearing the weight of society's expectations of what a middle age woman should wear. I've found my middle aged uniform of oversized psychedelic t shirts, harem pants, Jesus creepers and a nose ring. I look like a new age traveler that never got their shit together and I love it.

🖕 yours society.

Anewuser · 03/06/2023 11:58

@ZaZathecat are you sure they’re leggings? I’ve seen the nude legging combo and admittedly thought the girl was naked but that photo looks like she’s got her fanny out. Now wait for all those people to say you wouldn’t actually see her fanny etc…

Maireas · 03/06/2023 11:59

Peacepudding · 03/06/2023 11:10

I think it's less to do with the actual clothing and more an unpleasant shorthand for being older/fatter.

A willowy 20 something wafting about in a shapeless linen sack and sandals wouldn't be called frumpy, they'd probably be a fashion influencer. A short overweight 50yo in the same would get the frumpy label.

You're so right 👍
Definitely ageism

The dress and trainers look is great, I don’t ever want to go back to the times where women and young girls hobbled round in shoes that cause permanent damage. Women look so much better when they are walking comfortably.

Absolutely 💯

I love getting home from a night out dancing 20000+ steps and my feet aren’t killing me.

Midi/maxi dresses and trainers will be my style while I’ve still got feet

HappyKoala56 · 03/06/2023 12:02

Groutyonehereagain · 03/06/2023 10:03

If skinny jeans are out why are the shops full of them?

Absolutely this!

Vivfor60 · 03/06/2023 12:04

It doesn't matter what we wear once over a certain age as we are invisible anyway. It is quite freeing. I am finding that I am going back to my gothy look of younger days, so no floral maxis for me.

BTW, we are not allowed to show off our aged upper arms, are we? Unless we are as toned as Michelle Obama. It really annoys me that I seem to have internalised that one.

MrsRandom123 · 03/06/2023 12:04

Well midi / maxi dresses (often floral) tend to be my summer uniform as i hate sleeveless tops and don’t like my legs! Tend to wear with converse rather than white trainers but with denim or
biker jacket. Won’t be changing it although i do have a few cropped jumpsuits but thats it and i hate linen. Skinny jeans are the only kind that suit me and are my winter uniform again with converse or boots. Never been one to care about fashion though & would opt for comfort everytime.

everyone should wear what they want to!

Maloneyb · 03/06/2023 12:05

Fashionotista · 03/06/2023 11:53

I did say I was being sarcastic in a follow up comment 😬but in hindsight should have added that as a footnote in my op 😁

Well you’ve really started something now 🤣🤣

AlwaysGinPlease · 03/06/2023 12:06

I couldn't care less what's in or out. I think it's just daft to stop wearing something you like and already own just because " someone" has decided it's out 🙄 stop being dictated to.

Fashionotista · 03/06/2023 12:06

@ChrisPPancake dinosaur pumps! Please may I see a photo?

I’m getting ready for a pub garden lunch. Wearing my orange ditsy floral midi dress and converse. I’m hoping the sun makes an appearance but if not I’ll have my white denim jacket on!

I’m sure no one said we shouldn’t wear floral maxis, just that they are dull - they are dull, but so are shirts and jeans but you don’t see men worrying about that do you?

Bog average clothes are fine, not everyone is super into fashion and there is a lot else to think about.

Maybe the people who wear them don't find them dull.

SaxSick · 03/06/2023 12:13

I saw a group of women out for brunch recently and they were all wearing varying dresses, trainers and jackets. They looked like a bunch of happy bright flowers enjoying their cocktails. I'm looking for a photo I have of my Gran on one of her mystery tours in the 1960s and they are all similar - floral dresses, hats and cardigans loving life.
