Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

I know for sure my flowery white trainer outfits are coming everyone's way this summer. Couldn't give a monkeys what anyone else is wearing as I look pretty fabulous 😄

I know what's going on on these threads now. We are what we wear (aka the apparel oft proclaims the (wo)man). Therefore when someone mentions a brand/trend we dislike, we feel that who we are is being called into question and so we need to dissociate from said brand/trend immediately in order to reassert our identity. Then the posters who do like that brand/trend feel that their identity is being threatened, and respond in similar fashion. Then whoosh - we have a combustible situation and everyone starts to wonder why we're getting so worked up about 'just clothes'.

That's my bit of cod psychology. You're welcome.

Sounds a bit fishy to me 😂

Having read part of the thread the OP is referring to I've read this thread with interest and a certain amount of amusement. It seems, when it comes to fashion, I'm quite often late to the party 🤣. Last week I bought my first flowery dress (actually I bought three of them) and a denim jacket (the first since I was a teenager I'm 51). So far I've worn two of the dresses with sandals although I do have white trainers and no doubt will wear them with the dresses at some point. I've also worn skinny jeans for years but I suspect only after they went out of fashion 😂

Wrt 'wear what you want' and not being interested in fashion I suppose I have a certain interest. I go shopping/lunch 2/3 times a year with a relative. I enjoy trying on and seeing what suits me. I also occasionally notice what other people wear and if I like it I will try to emulate the look. I won't wear something just because it's in fashion unless it suits me and I feel comfortable (my number 1 priority) in it. I don't follow anyone on Instagram and haven't read a fashion magazine in years. Even then I was more interested in the articles than the fashion. I do lurk on the S&B boards from time to time and read some of the threads. I even learn things about fashion 😉 I've enjoyed reading this one and I believe that posters should be able to discuss trends/fashions without being shut down. How else am I going to learn (even if I do ignore what is in fashion and still wear what I want 😉).

Hence ends my babble 🤣

@PhoenixReincarnated I think you have a healthy relationship with fashion. You seem to want to look nice but are not driven to overly focus on what is happening fashion wise beyond making sure you aren't dressing from another era. Some people love fashion. They love the changes and they feel good switching things up regularly. Other people are happy to wear whatever they first grab when they reach for something in the morning. I was very much in the former category in my younger up to mid 30s life. Now in my late 50s I still love fashion and trends but tend to stick to a simpler version. It does my head in the way fashion followers throw shade at those not interested on here and how those who are late adopters start by saying their dated trends are not dated and then drift into 'I wear what I want bum not a sheep'. It's just clothes.

stingypeasant · 09/06/2023 07:25

'I'm' not a sheep. Bum??? 😹

GUARDIAN1 · 09/06/2023 16:03

People should wear what they like and feel comfortable in. I don't like the idea of looking down on someone because of their clothing, or the thought of dictating what's OK and what's not.

Honestly don’t care what’s trendy and what’s not

@Sierra26, I am wondering why you posted on here then? I don't care about golf or camping holidays, so would never post on a thread about those.

Very fair point, and well taken!! I must have been having a grumpy day. I guess my point was meant to be I don’t really like the term “trendy”, if I think something looks good I’ll wear it / if I don’t I wont. I won’t stop and think about what trends/fashion are telling me to wear/not to wear. Appreciate I’m probably in the wrong place if I have that view, but I do think “style” is different to “trend”.

What I will admit now is it has made me think differently when I see people wearing the combo OP mentioned 😂

consider me influenced

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 10/06/2023 20:27

Ha, thank you for taking my question seriously, @Sierra26. Nice honest post.

🤣😂🤣

Sorry but that literally made me lol.

I do like to be fashionable to a certain point but it's not the be all and end all. I will wear my flowery dresses (and my non flowery dresses) with and without trainers/denim jacket. I will also keep an eye on fashion trends (mainly S&B if truth be told although also through observation of what other people wear).

I do hope to see some discussion on trends (past/present/future) on here. It's quite often how I learn.
