Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

I love that. It definitely wouldn't suit me though.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 03/06/2023 10:32

Oh the one piece leotard thing in ribbed fabric or matt fabric, in brown or beige. WTF is that about?

Kardashian baby-gro.

Ooh me too, agree though don't think could pull it off at 5ft2.. it's vesicular to my 1986 post Communion outfit, tho that was turquoise 😆

TinkBevan · 03/06/2023 10:32

You do you, but I’ll dress how I’m comfortable to thanks… 🙄

pennypingletonpenny · 03/06/2023 10:33

I was at a event last night with around 10 women aged 30ish to 55ish and every single one of them was wearing either a long dress with denim jacket or skinny jeans! And almost all were wearing trainers too. Not a judgey post just an observation, it’s really interesting how both looks have taken hold.

I don’t personally see many people wearing tunics and leggings though.

When you're a certain age and you've already seen that style of outfit and fabric come in and out of fashion to the extent it would remain unsold in charity shops it is so very hard to fancy buying it now.

LolaMoon · 03/06/2023 10:35

Eh, I don’t care if something is in or out. I wear what suits me. I think wearing something that doesn’t flatter you simply because it’s “in” is far more stupid and ridiculous. People that follow rules are just sheep. Personally I’m not a fan of floral because it’s just not me. I’m more into the rock chick look so that’s what I wear but I can appreciate it suits others. Wear what you like and relish the liberation it brings. I see fashion as a form of self expression so express who you are and don’t GAF what others think. You may not like how they dress either but it really and truly doesn’t matter!

TooJoy · 03/06/2023 10:36

Yes everyone needs to stop wearing them because they make you look asexual don’t you know.

I assume we both read the same thread but what I found ironic was the OP said she wore it all the time and was still planning to until she saw everyone else who looked frumpy and asexual etc.
But if that’s the case she would have looked like that too.

Fedupofdiets · 03/06/2023 10:40

I am glad you made this thread op because reading the other thread and some of the sneery comments about what we should / shouldnt wear is tiresome frankly. I am 46 and wear whatever I feel comfortable in, want to judge me? That says more about you than me, disappointing that some are critical of other just based on what they happen to wear.

Love from a sometimes floral dress wearer.

keyboardkat · 03/06/2023 10:40

The problem with "wearing what you like" is that it is often difficult to buy stuff that you are used to and comfortable wearing, when outlets and shops are mainly stocking the latest fad.

I'm still using clothes from years ago. For hot weather I wear cotton/linen wide leg trousers, sometimes roll up ends light chinos, sometimes midi t shirt dresses. I don't really get the trainers with dresses vibe myself, so I wear flattish walking sandals or Toms espadrilles. That's my uniform for Summer!

I am definitely of a certain age. If I had to ignore everything that I'd already seen come on go fashion wise I'd be naked!

Fashionotista · 03/06/2023 10:42

@TooJoy that asexual comment had me gobsmacked! I wanted to ask what exactly did she mean by that but noticed loads of other had already asked and she very quickly disappeared.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/06/2023 10:46

I think it was because of the shape of the loose dresses - ie a 'sexy' look is a tight dress and heels - a look that feels kind of 'wrong' to me now .

Fighterofthenightman1 · 03/06/2023 10:46

I'm glad skinny jeans didn't disappear from shops, the slighlty baggy, ill fitting, cropped to the ankle 'trendy' ones did absolutely nothing for me

JamSandle · 03/06/2023 10:49

Who cares what other people think? Wear what you like.

FiddleLeaf · 03/06/2023 10:50

I’ll be wearing the middle aged wardrobe all summer (I’m younger than middle aged) and folks in fashion can do one.

That said, I love the trend for linen co ords & on the hunt for one today.

Willmafrockfit · 03/06/2023 10:52

plenty of women are wearing sandals

Maireas · 03/06/2023 10:53

Frumpy? Asexual?
You get the term "frumpy" on S&B threads all the time. Really.
It just means that you're not necessarily dressing for the male gaze. It means that the clothing isn't skintight, or see through, or slitted, or you're not on teetering heels.
I'm glad women are dressing to please themselves. Dressing to suit their lives and their bodies.

Willmafrockfit · 03/06/2023 10:53

i found validation in a woman like myself wearing white trainers, only to find that eerg, she was my age!

Kaleidoscope101 · 03/06/2023 10:55

Love my maxis and will continue to wear them. I wear them with sandals though. Is that wrong 🤔.
Dependant on the weather, the denim jacket is usually on too 😁

MidnightMeltdown · 03/06/2023 10:57

Wear what you like. I'm in my 30s, and personally I'm beyond the age where I'm prepared to listen to the fashion industry saying:

'All the clothes that we've just told you to buy are now ugly and frumpy - now buy this instead'

Don't get sucked in.

DuchessOfMuck · 03/06/2023 11:00

I'm fed up seeing seeing the chunky black sandal. It seems to have replaced the white trainer where I live.

I can't believe there were leggings in that photo. 🤢

TheOGCCL · 03/06/2023 11:01

This is why ultimately you can only dress for yourself. We all have different opinions, tastes and bodies.

I like to think this is one of the benefits of getting older. Either you have figured out a personal style or you don’t care.

markingtimes · 03/06/2023 11:02

Definitely hanging on to the dress with trainers look. Normally find dresses in mint velvet but there aren't so many this year. Any recommendations??

DrMarciaFieldstone · 03/06/2023 11:02

Wear what you want and what suits you and what you are comfortable in.
