I think that style of top looks great Flo, it's a sort of updated 30s look to me, very attractive. Of course I'd be worrying about how to wear a coat with it ;)
Very pleased for you Flo that you're happy with your plastic shoes btw. Sadly I'm in a major huff with H&M - they've crossed another ethical border and are removing full time contracts for shop staff and re-hiring them on contracts for 5 hours/week and other ridiculous versions.
botemp · 06/03/2023 09:29
I think these days it would read less 'I hate my arms' or stomach in this case (this was one of the great Trinny and Susannah wisdoms, wasn't it?), but more 'I'm a modest dresser' which is weird to attach yourself to if you're not modest.
The top is a bit Carmen Miranda, I agree. But yes, large sleeves and coats is a conundrum. I have a coat with large accomodating sleeves but that means the wind gets in really easy so the whole coat is a bit of a joke when it comes to protecting you from the elements.
Is H&M just being an asshole in Sweden or everywhere, Bani? We're in a weird space here with employees, real shortage of them so they just need to threaten with strikes and their demands are met and some extras thrown in, forced freelancers definitely feel like they're on the way out.
botemp · 07/03/2023 09:24
How annoying, are the family that own the group still going round as if they're the epitome of noblesse oblige? I always found them rather lofty.
Paywall removed article from the FT (don't click accept cookies) on fashion's new focus on quality and longevity.
TBH, after reading all these sound bites from several designers I do get the distinct impression that the business side of the business said, we love the media attention you're garnering but it's not being converted into sales.
These conversations were probably had 6-9months ago, economic outlooks were a lot bleaker than they turned out to be (UK being a bit of an outlier but who could have predicted Truss would be that catastrophic 🤐), so I'm curious whether they continue down this path (I suspect, yes, because it will likely sell well) in the next batch of shows.

I don’t know who owns the hm group, but yeah I am surprised that they actually do that in a country like Sweden. I am with you bani don’t give them your pennies.
those Schiaparelli models in the article look to me like trying to target the more modest cultures?
Floisme · 07/03/2023 15:46
Well bani I won't lie, I'm glad you didn't tell me that before I bought my plastic shoes. I've not heard whether they're trying that over here where service industries appear to be simultaneously on their knees and desperate for staff. But then we've got Brexit to contend with on top of everything else.
Sorry I'm struggling to get into that FT link.

Possibly Red, I think the accessories bling of it all would probably appeal to the more modest (religious) cultures so to underpin that with modest clothes would be financially prudent (it's their pret a porter line after all).
Flo, spotted on the runway of Sacai, instead of a sliver of skin, layered underneath is a transparent fabric that kind of worked like a shadow. Possibility? I also loved the oversized topstitching on the trousers, which i think are some sort of neoprene.

Redandblue11 · 08/03/2023 08:39
I was thinking a lace top could also work well, you could also get some which are not too busy to give a more clean look.
I did not know the brand sacai. The structure of the jacket is also lush, love how it lines up those belts on the sleeves and continues under the chest.
botemp · 08/03/2023 10:40
Me too, Bani it reminds me of when I only had very basic sewing skills (basically a running stitch and a blanket stitch) as a child and attempted to make clothes for my Barbies. Much nicer version of course, if only neoprene was nice to wear (I don't like how it feels on the skin).
I really like Sacai but hardly anyone stocks it. The diffusion brand Sacai Luck would probably be up your alley Red but I've never seen it in the shops.
I managed to get some Vermeer tickets, they released some extra night slots, was a pain to get through to the website since Monday when they announced it but I managed it today in case anyone else was still thinking of making the trip, I doubt they'll be around for long. The site is still being testy though, I've got an order confirmation but not email.
And yes, the demographic thread is interesting, Bani, who knew such a dry business like title drew out all the interesting posters. Next thread title is going to be Third Quarterly Financial Review or something similar 😎
Floisme · 08/03/2023 11:14
I've never heard of Sacai but I really like those pics - such a fierce look, plus there's something about being covered neck to toe apart from a single flash of skin (anywhere) that I've always found really alluring, and even more so when there's also a touch of 'Is she or isn't she?' going on.
I'm loving the demographics thread. It looks like dry titles are definitely the way to go on this board.
EffortlessDesmond · 08/03/2023 11:26
Another one loving the Sacai pictures and the demographic thread.
And in other news, just had a quick visit to the re-opened version of the posh frock shop locally, and the new owner was a fan of the last one, so is doing quite similar brands, moods and colours with some Margaret Howell added. It looks promising.
ShangPie · 08/03/2023 13:28
Another one here who’s been devouring the demographics thread - yes, bland titles are the way to go!
It’s definitely made me have a quiet word with myself about my clothes and how they don’t inspire me. I guess the feeling is that they suit me and my lifestyle in terms of shape, composition and colour, and are good solid staples for everyday life rather than cosplaying as a milkmaid or Lady of a country house, but they are all missing that je-ne-sais-quoi that makes me feel excited to wear them. I guess it’s the next level to find that spark!
Great news about the shop Desmond - a local gem to treasure

The whole Sacai show was great if you swipe right on the images you get lots of detail shots. I've been eyeing up a Sacai coat on Vestiaire but it needs to drop in price a bit for me to consider buying it blind.
Excellent news on the shop front Desmond, I hope it does well (but not so well there's nothing left in the sales).
mm47 · 10/03/2023 09:38
Wow just spent yesterday reading the demographics thread. Absolutely fantastic and also because it’s drawn in a whole load of new (to me) posters talking about stuff I’ve never heard of. V educational and really stimulating. Glad to see most of you are on it, too!
MmePoppySeedDefage · 11/03/2023 09:13
My £50 Sophie d'Hoore skirt that I found by serendipity as mentioned upthread has arrived from Oxfam at last. It's lovely - a soft black, lots of pleats, and made out of the sort of high-quality cotton poplin that's thin yet substantial and makes a bit of a noise.
It looks good with a number of jackets I've had a while that look corporate with a straight skirt, but don't with a wide flared one.
banivani · 11/03/2023 09:45
that sounds great mmepoppy! Inspired by the skirt talk I’ve tried to look out for skirts but I don’t see a lot I like. Like Flo I don’t like online shopping much and it doesn’t inspire me really. I do thanks to this have a Tradera search for Sophie d’Hoore though, you never know!
