But surely getting dressed up is the Whole Point of Catholicism, no?
I mean look at the Pope, look at him.

My thoughts exactly.

Ceremony, history, incense and vespers, the liturgical calendar and Bloody Frocks!

The rest can bugger off.

NatashaDancing · 24/05/2023 18:24

I might have been doing Mrs Thatcher an injustice. I recall she had some horrendous tweed suits when she became PM in 1979 but looking back at photos they seem to have been ditched pretty quickly (honestly I think some of them were picked up by Ms Sturgeon - she had some shockingly awful suits) Mrs T seems to have always been interested in clothes.

I'd wear the black coat, hat and pussycat bow in the 1983 picture with no hesitation.

Before I decided to tell the priest I wasn’t going to play marry Jesus anymore I did the lot, holy communion and also confirmation.
thinking about it, I wish I had my confirmation outfit! I was probably 14 or 15 so I wore white sailor blouse with black trimmings and details and a pair of low block snake print heels. Something like these photos, the heels were a touch shorter and the detail of the blouse also ran across the front buttons instead of navy like the photo it was black…
I cannot remember my bottoms… it wasn’t leather skirt though 😜

Aha @Redandblue11, they got you as far as conformation, what was your name?

I said No to confirmation, and had to endure another four years as a neysayer.

No to pro-life films, no to nonsensical ideas about women's fertility and life.

No to questionable men that got shunted to the priesthood.

No the the whole shebang.

And I never even got the frock.

RhadamanthNemes · 24/05/2023 23:39

I've just re-wateched the coronation with Zadok and the anointing.

I think people focus too much on the individual, rather than the spectacle.

I adore pomp and ceremony.

I'm not interested in the individuals, I like the fuckery.

I am a big fan of a constitutional monarchy.

Not so much a presidency.

I like the fact you're being anointed because you have no choice. To the tune of Zadok.

With robes of state.

NatashaDancing · 25/05/2023 00:54

I greatly enjoyed the coronation. Every one looked fabulous. Princess Kate and Penny Mordaunt were both awesomely regal.

Special shout out for Lt. Colonel Johnny Thompson too. Here's a nice photo of Penny and Lt Colonel Johnny.

The start of the march back from Westminster Abbey with everyone starting at the same time was awesome too.

We Brits do do this sort of thing awfully well.

Ugh, couldn't care less for royals, I tolerate it over here in NL so far as it makes business sense but I sincerely hope for the youngest generations' sake that they say, stuff it, and walk away from it all. Much better clothes to be had without the restrictions, for one.

Much more concerned with Tina this morning Sad it feels like only yesterday (but it was about two years) I was looking at some of her dresses at an Alaia exhibit. For such a force she was really of rather small stature. There was some correspondence between her and Alaia as well and they were both so lovely to each other, admiring the skill of the other and struggling to acknowledge the praise of their own in comparison. Her wardrobe must be a proper treasure trove, I hope some exhibitions come of it.

I remember my mother taking me along (much much too young) to her biopic, I was rather clueless about domestic violence until that movie, it left a lasting impression and I like to think has served my judgement well.

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 25/05/2023 09:05

Yes, I really feel about Tina this morning. I also remember my mom telling me about her and admiring her. What a fantastic woman.

@RhadamanthNemes , we did not have a different name for confirmation. I am from South America and I have to say even though it is catholic, the application (even all those years ago) has been different to the application of it here in Europe, where I see it a lot more conservative in certain aspects if you are a catholic (…my upbringing was a weird one, my family didn’t even go to church. I probably ended up there to belong to a group after many years of jumping from one country to the other in a time of many extreme right wing dictators… some bits of the local churches did not support the extreme right).

Floisme · 25/05/2023 09:15

Yes, I believe Tina Turner had been in poor health for a while, so it's probably not unexpected for those close to her, but what an amazing woman. I can still remember the first time I heard 'River Deep, Mountain High' when I was a child and thinking, 'Who is that?' And then the way she came back with 'Private Dancer' after all those years when she must have thought she was going nowhere. Extra-ordinary.

Floisme · 25/05/2023 09:20

But before the discussion moves on I've got to have one more Shock at that photo of Mrs Thatcher's wedding outfit. It was post war so not wearing a white frilly dress was still standard I think - I've seen lots of photos of my mum's friends getting married in suits in the late 40s. But wow at crushed velvet!

Redandblue11 · 25/05/2023 10:22

I have just seen the wedding dress!

… mn not letting me upload photos …

Floisme · 25/05/2023 14:36

I've just had my afternoon cancelled so I'll treat you to some further thoughts on the coronation.

I guess some my views have mellowed over time in as much as I can now see the benefit of having a head of state who isn't aligned with party politics. I'll also admit I can't imagine how a democratic election for a head of state wouldn't descent into party politics. But I'm not quite prepared to concede the case for it being hereditary. So....

I do enjoy a royal wedding in the same way I used to enjoy Eurovision or a good soap opera - for the outfits and the gossip. Ahead of the coronation, I viewed it in the same way, and I do agree with Rhadamanth that it's about the institution and the spectacle rather than the individual. But I have to say, that anointing behind a screen business.... I was like - what the fuck is this?

I think they got away with it partly because very few people under 75 remembered the previous one so there was a massive curiosity factor. But I'm sure Charles would be the first to concede that it won't be another 70 years before the next one, so how they handle that will be interesting.

Fabulous clothes though, especially worn by the men, as I commented before. And I did enjoy that Patrick Grant programme a couple of nights before about how some of them were made.

ToEllewithIt · 26/05/2023 12:42

You made your first holy communion in jeans?! I was also disgusted because my mother insisted on making my dress in plain white cotton with puff sleeves, a sash and a round collar. What’s the correct term for that – like a peter pan, but no gap in the middle. There was hand embroidery on the collar in white. I had a wreath of fresh lily of the valley for my hair. With hindsight it was beautiful, but at the time I was not impressed at the lack of a veil, lace gloves and a parasol.

I love the confirmation outfit red. I think my outfit featured a cropped pistachio denim jacket. The youth of today would spill blood for it. Why didn’t I keep it?

It’s really tough to strike that balance as both a global leader and a spouse I’d imagine, especially with the current COL crisis. I think it’s a measure of how beloved the PoW is that she doesn’t get more flack for buying identical 3 grand coat dresses in a range of colours. I guess that they’re close enough to a uniform that most people don’t notice. There was also a dress that appeared a first glance to be a thrifty re-wear, but if you looked closely the pattern placement was different, so it was in actual fact another extremely expensive duplicate. I think it’s canny to do a mix of high-street and high-end or to stick to mid-tier designers.

Speaking of the coronation, while I didn’t watch the whole thing, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the ceremony. It was fascinating. I loved Penny Mordaunt’s outfit too, but I was surprised at the laurel motif. I do think you’ve one of the best royals though botemp for fashion watching. Queen Maxima is definitely a risk taker and not afraid to crack open the jewel vault. Some of her outfits are awful, but she seems to have great fun with fashion.

Nice skirt Crkd

Clothes wise, I finally bought the 1774 Birkenstocks that have lived rent-free in my head for a year. I bought my holy grail white linen trousers. I have spent years looking. I’m now faffing about summer bags. I did feel last year that I was missing a summer bag for holidays, but I can’t decide what I want. I have to admit that I do like some of the Loewe raffia ones, but am put off by 1) their ubiquity 2) their price (for raffia like? – it’s basically straw no?) 3) the fact that they are mostly big and I will therefore end up carrying everyone’s crap to the pool and if it is very handbag-y my DH will resist carrying it. So now I’m wondering if a better bet is a cheapo more unisex shopper for carting the kindles, sun cream, goggles etc to the pool and a smaller summery handbag for the evenings.

botemp · 26/05/2023 13:20

I wish Birkenstocks were comfortable for me it would solve so many issues. I have similar issues around summer bags, I've been looking at this one but I think it needs a bag inside it which kind of defeat the purpose... (Also fake leather handle and heat seems a bad idea).

I like the Loewe ones too but price for what you get (it really is just paying for someone to sew a big leather logo on a market tote that's max €20, isn't it?) and ubiquity is also the thing that puts me off. The Celine ones seem to be even worse quality for more money. There is a more discreet one that also isn't the standard raffia by Loewe (that's the small size, the size up is nicer) but I'm not sure if they're still making those. Anyhow when trying that on I still sort of felt a bit off about spending €€€ on a non leather bag.

Miu Miu has some ridiculously expensive (but very cheery) crochet ones too, I suspect these will be new ubiquitously (faked) ones this summer. There was also the ridiculously expensive Prada one last year <sigh>

Yes, Maxima does indeed take risks, I think it helps that she's never really been forced to change who she is to suit the institution, people liked her from the off and remains the most popular royal.

I thought it was Camilla who regularly gets away with murder in terms of what she spends on clothes going unnoticed.

That is my issue too. The Celine ones definitely feel like market bags with a logo lashed on.

The miu miu ones are fun. I like the little white raffia bags for evening and the prada equivalent, but again the beachy shoppers just feel like crazy money.

This Demellier one I like, but I've never see the bags in person. It might be very heavy too. https://demellierlondon.com/products/the-new-york-cobalt-blue-ecru-striped-canvas-off-white-smooth?variant=43728339927214

If I were taller and could ignore the audacity of the price tag, this Bottega one would probably be top of my list (although I'd agonise if it's too in your face Mrs Moneypants). The ones from Muuñ seem nice for a reasonable-ish price but not always practical (the ones I always seem to like have short handles).

I don't know about Demeiller's canvas bags but I really dislike the stitching on their leather ones. I'd personally find it too preppy for a more relaxed holiday destination in my mind, but that's an odd thing to get hung up on...

They've been out of style for a good long time now, but I did like Vanessa Bruno bags back in the day, they were sort of ideal summer bags that could be worn on vacation and back home. She probably still does some, must have a look.

Ignoring the price, that Bottega Veneta bag is lovely, I really like how the handles are placed and at least the branding is on the inside unlike Celine / MiuMiu etc. Although come to think of it isn’t BV known for woven bags 🤭. (Shuffles off with ancient basket…)

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 26/05/2023 17:49

It’s probably a good thing I’ve been put off Bottega Venetia for life by an encounter with some outrageously glum and sullen staff in their Sloane St store several decades ago. That basket is rather nice.

I’ve had my eye on a Loewe version for a couple of years now. I am admittedly recklessly profligate, but a billion ££ for straw? … Meantime I continue with the striped basket I bought in person from the Toast on Oxford High St for a child’s prep school sports day. Child is an undergraduate now … Basket still almost as good as new. Angry

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 26/05/2023 18:18

Veneta …

Redandblue11 · 26/05/2023 18:27

I have also just bought a pair of Birkenstocks.
oh, I like the cheerfulness of the miu miu bag!

Floisme · 27/05/2023 10:33

I got Birkenstocks 2 (or was it 3?) years ago and I've no complaints.

Speaking of summer, what's the rating for Sunspel T shirts? I think we've talked about them before but can't remember what was said. Jess Cartner Morley was singing their praises but I trust the Guardian less and less these days.

My favourite Gap pima cotton T has just died - a very long, hard life so I've no complaints, but it's got me thinking about perfect Ts all over again. Last year I bought 5 from Rapanui which cost less than a single one from Sunspel, and they're ok but not overwhelming. Plus I'm fed up of the way they (Rapanui) market themselves as a British company when these Ts were made in Bangladesh, especially when they keep sending me preachy emails about climate change Hmm

botemp · 27/05/2023 11:39

I think general consensus is good, bar an odd jaunt into manufacturing in cheap labour countries for a few years, for Sunspel but it seems to be a bit you get what you pay for. Your money is better spent on the Sea Island quality than the standard stuff but at that point you might as well go shop at Margaret Howell for t-shirts. It's a gateway drug, essentially, you've been warned.

OP posts:
botemp · 27/05/2023 11:42

Btw, I still had the tab open for the Demeiller bag and out of curiosity I zoomed in on the topstitching up top, just now before closing and OMG it's so shoddy, how did that get past quality control.

I've just stumbled across this thread and was wondering if I can ask a question? I sense that if I ask on the main S&B board I'll be chastised for not finding something at ASOS.

I'm having a shoe crisis this spring.

I have trainers (3 pairs of these in different colours, I seem to have an addiction https://www.matchesfashion.com/products/1389454?qxjkl=tsid%3A30065%7Ccgn%3AgcdL%2FATRVoE&c3ch=LinkShare&c3nid=gcdL%2FATRVoE&utm_source=linkshare&utm_medium=affiliation&utm_campaign=uk&utm_content=gcdL%2FATRVoE&rffrid=aff.linkshare.2523611.35725), I have these

and these (which I don't love - and have only worn once, might put them on Vinted or somewhere)

I can't bring myself to love ballet flats, but I need something versatile with a closed toe. I've ordered these and they're ok, but I'm not crazy about them. I think I just don't love a dainty shoe

Also, re the bags - the Miu Miu ones are lovely but would be hard to wear with a lot of outfits, so might no earn their keep? And I'm willing to pay Bottega money for their leather, but I'd be hard pressed to shell that out for raffia.
