No tongue in cheek necessary, fairly accurate in my experience too. They're also the worst at receiving any type of minor criticism. Not that I'm particularly skilled at it either, it always stings, but they are Olympic champions of not taking it well.

I always feel terrible if they've got a family, the amount of sacrifice necessary to accommodate the big creative ego that's got the world kissing their ass as they seek to solidify their immortality through design must take a huge toll on those closest to them.

They're not all like that, but in general, it's a path you consciously follow and the field already attracts a certain overconfident type and the worst qualities of those seem to magnify with the even the tiniest bit of recognition.

I normally wouldn't comment on the clothes of the wife of (and I was under the impression she wasn't really embracing a public role) but the Guardian ran an article and Akshata Murty so I guess it's okay? She looks great and it's also interesting to read how the look has been curated as she does seem to be a bit of a clothes head, so it's an interesting balance. Also, can't help but admit it should totally be cringe but Sunak's childish glee for socks entertained me.

Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty take careful approach to G7 power dressing

No £1,650 Valentino coats but no M&S either as wealthy pair seek to tread fine line between being relatable and stylish

Yes she does look great nice and approachable. It is not surprising really that she has had input on how to present herself, glad she listened though as is really not the time to be out there as a public figure.

I was also looking at the Australian fashion week article and Danni’s first aboriginal to present solo in it and really enjoyed the collection, the softness of the fabrics and colours and also the head pieces.

Thanks for the links Red and bo, beautiful colours in the Denni Francisco collection and I really want those boots.

Akshata Murty looks great I think - love the bright pink and green. I'm ambivalent about the dressing down. Of course I understand the optics but a part of me's thinking 'Oh for goodness sake, we all know you're rich so just show me your beautiful clothes.'

botemp · 21/05/2023 10:04

I know what you mean Flo, I did see a headline somewhere that they lost £200M last year so I suppose it somewhat reflects that 😐

But, yeah, it is annoying, it's the same for Royals, if anyone can wear the ridiculously expensive stuff surely it's them. It's that weird mechanism of placing people on a pedestal and expecting them to still be super normal. I'm also wondering who decided that designer is okay, so long as it's a designer of your country. It would all feel very limited to me and suck the joy out of it somewhat.

Yes I know how we dress sends out signals - I was always conscious of it when I was working - but I rich people pretending they're just like us is just infantalising nonsense as far as I'm concerned. It reminds me of David Cameron getting photographed cycling to the office.

Floisme · 22/05/2023 12:21

Anyway I've just landed what is possibly my most 80s jacket ever, which is arguably not a good thing but hey.

Photos were taken in bright sunlight so the colours are totally off - in real life it's a deeper pink and definitely not lilac. Wool. French label that I don't recognise. Slight damage to the lining and some bubbling at the front so presumably previous owners ignored the dry clean only label, but who am I to judge.

It's pure Mel and Kim on Top of the Pops. I've no idea how or when I'll wear it and I don't care.

botemp · 22/05/2023 12:31

Yeah, I do think it's quite transparent but I think the message itself isn't all that important but more who are they trying to message to that would be open to that message, despite recognising it for the message that it is (in this case I'd say it's for those who would potentially be open to voting conservative not becuase it's in their best interest but they have aspirations to be of the class where conservative economic policies would benefit them over others, Valentino is a grasp to far in that dream but Joseph is potentially attainable).

Ooh yes very 80s, it's got some very interesting darts. Do you think it originally had a dress or skirt with it? You could wear it out as a spring jacket over jeans, surely?

OP posts:
Floisme · 22/05/2023 12:47

I thought part of a suit at first but it reminds me so much of this Mel and Kim jacket (colour aside) that I'm not so sure now. Yeah jeans should work but I think I need to clear the video out of my head first.

Flo there must be an invisible force sending us towards 80’s jackets.
I just got this 😁🤔
So guess what, love your purchase!
Mine is made in England, the construction looks a lot less interesting than yours, but trust me when you put this jacket on the shoulders have the best shape I have seen on me from a jacket. You have to trust me.
the colour on the photo is also off for mine. I tried mine over some whistles barrel jeans in dark indigo and I liked what I saw, again you have to trust me.

I think designer of your own country so far as UK might have come from Mrs Thatcher. Mrs Major certainly wore lots of Windsmoor, Alexon, Jaeger. Mrs Blair had lots of Paddy Campbell. Mrs May was possibly the most adventurous, certainly she toned it down a bit when she became PM.Ms Sturgeon is keen on Scottish designers.

If I'm allowed to pass comments on the appearance of female politicians I'd love to know who took Mesdames Thatcher and Sturgeon aside and just said "no, your entire wardrobe is going in the bin and we're starting again". They both dressed very elegantly by the time of their falls.

Apologies for not returning earlier to thank you, @botemp, for reminding me of the existence of Labels. I think I’ve landed on the site once or twice before but then forgotten. This time it took a good two hours of my day - and is perfection.

I don’t have any noticeable opinion on Norman Foster - but this year’s Venice Biennale of Architecture has caught my attention, mainly because of the rhetoric (and stylishness) of its curator, Lesley Lokko. I may be in Umbria at some point over the Summer, but I doubt there’s even the remotest possibility of my getting to Venice during that trip.

Your jacket has made me nostalgic, @Floisme - I so clearly remember the time when everyone dressed like that. The cutting is darling.

I have made my first Autumn purchase.Hmm GrinOccupation-related fury kept me awake last night - and I somehow stumbled upon the abandoned skirt in my Vestiaire basket. I’d completely assumed it would have gone over the last several weeks, but there it was. Sofie D’Hoore from 2019. 99% wool + 1% silk. Red and blue, (like the dress below) but found better pictures of the camel colour skirt. I’m quite excited; I loved that collection - on a screen, at least. Just hope it arrives - my Vestiaire account shows I tried to buy a Margiela bag (from a different seller) in 2018 that never materialised …

Oh I like that inside lining on the outside aesthetic Crkd but I've yet to find the perfect item in it so I'm well Envy especially in the dress colour it's even more exciting.

I should be focusing on summer clothes but I was also distracted with a/w items as I was instead stroking an Acne Studios scarf this weekend. They have some new weighty version and it's so lovely and thick. Also in that odd pearly grey slightly leaning towards taupe colour palette that suits me really well for whatever reason.

The Venice Architecture Biennale has been a bit of a snooze fest for years now, it's suddenly caught my attention too and am now trying to pencil a trip in. I used to just go for the excuse of going to Venice but the pandemic has meant it's been a really long time. I'm ashamed to admit I have not been paying attention to Lesley Lokko's outfits, must remedy that at once.

Flo and Red if you get some matching hats and swap them you too can be a musical duo 🎶

It's lovely.
Thank you! It makes me smile every time I look at it.

I love the idea of anyone daring to tell Margaret Thatcher how to dress. Oh to be a fly on the wall! I do remember seeing her striding around with a cream coat over her shoulders and thinking how good she looked and then choking on the thought. (I'm not quite such an arse these days.) I've been looking for a pic but can't find one.

But I also imagine Mrs T enjoyed her clothes because, although she had a distinctive style, it wasn't formulaic and she'd make some great and equally some awful choices. Likewise Theresa May although she's never made a secret of it. Nicola Sturgeon I suspect, isn't that interested - or maybe she is but was never confident - so maybe she was happier listening to a stylist and sticking to a formula. Same with Hillary Clinton.

Floisme · 24/05/2023 09:41

Oops massive cross post, sorry I spent so long googling for Mrs Thatcher in a cream coat that I missed you both. Will read now.

mm47 · 24/05/2023 10:38

Couldn’t resist it! Not sure the coat is that marvellous but love the ensemble of coat and headscarf

mm47 · 24/05/2023 11:17

Sorry my phone won’t let me post photos for some reason.

RhadamanthNemes · 24/05/2023 16:20

I'm loving the 80s jackets!

Re public figures and clothes, I think Akshata looks fantastic, I too hate the idea that public figures can't wear expensive clothes because it's not 'relatable'. It doesn't even make sense. Should they also eat turkey dinosaurs and read fan-fic and holiday in 3* AIs?

When we were watching the coronation I loved the fact that there are ancient guilds that embroider clerical vestments, I want my public figures to look fancy! The current Dali Lama has a penchant for Gucci loafers. I want more showboating from politicians, not less, it's more honest. Otherwise, where's the line? Primark? Mao tunics? What is deemed acceptable? And who gets to choose?

When I took my first Holy communion I was extremely peed-off that my parents went to the University chaplaincy which was very casual and I wore jeans and No Fuss Was Made. I wanted a big dress and white shoes. You're making me eat The Lord fgs. I wanted ceremony! Bugger being humble (which is generally all for show).

This may have coloured my views on such matters...

Floisme · 24/05/2023 16:26

Hang on. You wore jeans for first holy communion? Shock
No frilly white, I'm-going-to-marry-Jesus frock?
Flowers

RhadamanthNemes · 24/05/2023 16:38

Yes @Floisme.

The cuts run deep.

RhadamanthNemes · 24/05/2023 16:42

Although Catholicism and I had a very rocky relationship, culminating in expulsion from school.

I was only ever in it for the frocks.

(And even that was denied me).

Floisme · 24/05/2023 16:53

But surely getting dressed up is the Whole Point of Catholicism, no?
I mean look at the Pope, look at him.

Floisme · 24/05/2023 16:54

Except for nuns I suppose. They definitely drew the short straw.
