Evening Royal style and beauty fans.
Into the Carolean era, with more bling we hope! Also more state banquets?

Should really say worn it since strictly speaking I didn’t go on to describe a pairing!

KillingMeDeftly · 09/10/2022 08:15

The Strathmore looks better in the display cabinet than it does on the QM. I don't think she was particularly stylish. And I know her wedding dress was of the time but it looked like a sack on her!

Maireas · 09/10/2022 08:23

Yes, the Strathmore belongs to you, @RomainingCalm! (you also have the Oriental Circlet.)
I read that KC is slimming down the Coronation ceremony fairly radically - I really hope there's still room for tiaras, and it's not just day dresses with hats.

I just saw that; it's going to be less formal, morning or lounge suits, not the ermine gowns and capes and stuff. I wanted to see the bloody tiaras. AngryGrin

lollipoprainbow · 09/10/2022 09:05

@NiqueNique wonder if it's a hat or some sort of tiara, I guess it's still around somewhere.

I think this is a great shame, lounge suits seriously ?! I was pretty horrified that Boris showed up in a lounge suit to the late Queens funeral. I get that KC probably feels it’s not right when there is a cost of living crisis going on that maybe it’s insensitive but it’s also a hugely historic occasion. I’ll be quite disappointed if it’s dressed down.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/10/2022 09:49

I can understand where Charles is coming from but it's not like they'd be purchasing new tiaras for the occasion. They're already there in the vaults so may as well use them!

Ermine robes are a different story of course, can't really wear those these days.

I agree about her wedding dress but those 1920s dresses look pretty horrendous unless you are very slim with small bust. QM always stuck with that loose dress unfitted style, It doesn’t do anyone any favours. I think she may have thought like a lot of women who are not slim that it disguised it but in actual fact it makes you look worse. Speaking from experience here. I also think that in those days a “lady “didn’t wear much in the way of make up, it was associated with “fast” women and flappers , maybe she would have worn a little powder etc tiny bit of rouge but nothing noticeable, so she seems plain to modern eyes without mascara etc

@KillingMeDeftly yes I think they have fake fur when making any new ones but I wonder if there are some of the old real fur ones left? My grandfather used to work for a furriers in London that made coats for the Royal Family, the QM came to visit the factory once and complained that the men were sitting out the back eating their sandwiches 😃

KillingMeDeftly · 08/10/2022 22:33

Apparently Barbour.

Yes Barbour, but from last year - I own it myself! Pretty sure it looks better on Carole than me, though. 😀

NiqueNique · 09/10/2022 10:27

I’m disappointed by that too. The time, fair enough. The complexity, fair enough. But the pomp and pageantry needs to stay!!

lollipoprainbow · 09/10/2022 10:34

Sounds like the Coronation will essentially be a church service with a crown thrown in !

meateatingveggie · 09/10/2022 10:42

Reducing the 'quantity' is fine, fewer guests etc is fine. Reducing the 'quality' is another thing. Please don't water down the pomp and splendour.

HM funeral was a worldwide event because of the absolute wonder of the pageantry.

NiqueNique · 09/10/2022 10:43

We want pomp!

We want pomp!

We want pomp!

We want pomp!

We want pomp!

<Bangs @frugalkitty’s sceptre> Grin

@lollipoprainbow I spent ages trying to work out what exactly Queen Mary’s headdress is so I could make my post accurate; I think it might be some sort of turban.

NiqueNique · 09/10/2022 10:56

@meateatingveggie Absolutely right! The pageantry matters a great deal because that’s where the history and heritage of the institution lies. If you strip that out you strip out a lot of what makes the monarchy what it is. There is meaning in each and every thing, every action, every item, every party, and that’s what I want to see. Charles needs to be careful because if he waters everything down too much he risks watering down the Monarchy as a concept.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/10/2022 11:07

Queen Mary didn't really subscribe to the "less is more" theory did she? In every photo she's dripping with diamonds! But she was fairly plain-looking, especially compared to her beautiful MiL, so maybe she felt she had to compensate.

Noooo! We want pomp, colour, arcane rituals and plenty of bling. Please.

Interesting to see QM's parents. Those genes weren't strongly passed down I don't think.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/10/2022 12:17

I think it's a shame too — it would have been lovely to have seen it in "modern" televised colour.

But, but, but - shiny things! 😧

The words "coronation" and "lounge suit" do not belong in the same sentence.

I can see a slight resemblance between the QM there an Eugenie but it's only very slight.

The QM was apparently a very sought-after and popular debutante. There is a rumour that she had her eye on the Prince of Wales originally but who knows how true that was 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maireas · 09/10/2022 12:48

Yes, I see Andrew and Eugenie as well.
I had heard that she'd had her eye on Edward, so in retrospect it was fortunate that didn't happen. George and Mary were very happy that she accepted Bertie.

David was apparently not interested in her as she wasn't his type but I suspect that had he been then things might've turned out very differently!
