Do I look fat in this

I am a size 8/10 but i think I do shop at shops where the sizing is generous like seasalt, crew clothing, boden, joules etc. second dress is from outnet and by a designer called rachel zoe. I have always been petite so generally eat whatever I want but now that I am nearly 30, possibly this is not a great idea...

And I don't usually pay much attention to my figure. I focus a lot on makeup (which I love) and that takes 10 minutes everyday so after that and brushing my teeth and putting on contact lens, i just grab a dress, put it on, drag a brush through my hair and zoom out of the door. So I don't actually notice much how my figure looks until I go on holiday and my DH takes photos of me...

When you guys say form fitting dress with defined waist do you mean like this?

Wow you look absolutely stunning.

You are definitely not doing yourself any favours with the previous dresses. Do you see how much better that looks?

well i guess the other photos didn't have my face in it so photos with faces always look better! Actually this dress is from Boden too and I do wear it on weekends too, but sometimes I wear it for work and so it goes into the wash by the time the weekend rolls around (cos I get bored of black and my workplace has become quite casual post covid!) The same goes for my other form fitting dresses. And then I gravitate towards loose fitting dresses. Also when you go on holiday, you generally get up quite early to catch the train and then i just grab the first thing i see (same with packing tbh).

Maybe I should wear something else for work and bring that dress to norway for my mini break this weekend!

OMG! You are absolutely beautiful! You have such a cute face and that dress looks amazing on you. I think you would look even more beautiful with your hair cut to just above your shoulders.

Great style of dress for you 👌

Thank you. My hair is shorter now but this was just after the pandemic (that is why I was holding a mask in my hand!)

This is much better for you. You look lovely. I think it's because it has a waist band. A more tailored look would suit you too, you definitely need things with a defined waist.

You could be the late Queen in the last picture.

I thought the last photo was an accidental upload of a picture of the queen!

digression- i have taken up cycling and went on my first ride today on london roads. I wore jeans and a t short under my barbour puffa. My jeans are gap leggings 28R, and I am reasonably happy with them, should i stick with them. I would be using my bike as a mode of transport so would probably be pottering around shops after my bike ride. One day, I aim to cycle from London to St Albans.

You look very lovely in the last photo! The dress fits much better!

And I think I get what you were originally asking... are you from East Asia? Because I can see why you'd get the 'fat' comments over there but by UK standards you aren't fat at all.

Calphurnia88 · 13/09/2022 14:12

amifat2022 · 13/09/2022 10:15

yes

I wasn't sure as you'd covered your face in the first set of photos.

You have a very pretty, youthful face. As other posters have said, you would benefit from shopping in stores more aimed at your age range (not Joules, Seasalt, etc which I tend to associate with older women from the home counties). Maybe you'd benefit from seeing a personal stylist?

yes. tbh no one has told me i am fat except my parents but they told me that since my teen years. People can be very 'honest' though, i remember once an aunt told my DH directly- ' you are no longer fat, you used to be fat, that is good!'

I'm guessing by your ethnicity and religion you're from USA but Jewish. I get you, a close friend of mine is a liberal Jew and she doesn't go short either.

The dress shapes and labels you go for though are definitely for someone older and don't flatter you.

I'd never normally shop here and this dress would be too big e.g. with height (unless you got it shortened or are happy with it being maxi on you but this dress:-

www.peacocks.co.uk/4304228-green-abstract.html is great and comes in a tan and green black print.

Here are a few other options but H&M can be quite good too:-

You’re not fat, but none of the dresses are flattering in their fit. I would also suggest buying a better bra and trying one with a smaller band and a large cup - I am certain this would also help your clothes sit better. The other issue is the length of the dresses you’ve posted pictures of is they’re not hitting you at the most flattering part of your leg - try waisted dresses that hit you at the slimmest part of your calf.

Also, OP, I am Jewish too and just because we do have to observe certain traditions with regards to dressing for shul, it does not mean we have to wear shapeless sacks!

I know a few women who go to synagogue/Catholic church (surprisingly similar re clothes!) and as long as they either cover arms/legs - they can get away with dresses which are say knee length or which have a shorter sleeve, as long as they cover with a jacket/cardigan. I've even known women who don't want to show calves wear opaque tights with knee length boots. You basically don't wear short skirts (but can wear e.g. a dress which opens at collar and shows neckline (but not bust or hardly any).

I mean FFS my ex boss was a liberal Jew and his wife (older but SAHW/M) used to dress quite racily at times even to shul, but she knew what she could get away with and then wear at home!

raffegiraffe · 14/09/2022 21:14

I am same height and proportions as you, curvy and with a young looking face.
I've been trying to work out why somethings suit me and other dont.
I looked in to kibbe types and it made lots of sense.
I'm soft gamine and need to accommodate my curve and petiteness.
Try looking in to it and the clothing suggestions. I always need waist emphasis, nothing oversized and there are specific shapes to look for. I've found it excellent. I hope you do

Yes that one is much better! Well done on the cycling - I can't cycle anywhere without wearing cycling shorts with a padded crotch. Definitely can't walk around the shops like that talking of unflattering clothes. Blush
