Do I look fat in this

I am a size 8/10 but i think I do shop at shops where the sizing is generous like seasalt, crew clothing, boden, joules etc. second dress is from outnet and by a designer called rachel zoe. I have always been petite so generally eat whatever I want but now that I am nearly 30, possibly this is not a great idea...

And I don't usually pay much attention to my figure. I focus a lot on makeup (which I love) and that takes 10 minutes everyday so after that and brushing my teeth and putting on contact lens, i just grab a dress, put it on, drag a brush through my hair and zoom out of the door. So I don't actually notice much how my figure looks until I go on holiday and my DH takes photos of me...

Your clothing doesn't have to be tight to be more flattering. Something that fits over the breasts then skims over your stomach might work. Or high waisted trousers with a hip length top, gathered at the top so that it draws attention away from your stomach could work better. Or dresses that are in the sort of floaty style you like, just less material. Possibly maxi dress rather than mini.

I am five feet tall so I shy away from maxi dresses as I would be sweeping the floor! should i get midi dresses (which would be maxi length for me).

You don’t at all look fat or unhealthy in those dresses at all OP, nobody would think anything of the kind. You just look bigger than a size 8/10, but what does that matter as long as you’re happy and comfortable?

Mercurial123 · 12/09/2022 13:31

What height are you? A size 8/10 will look very different on someone who is 5'9" than say 5'3". You don't look fat but agree around a size 12.

faretheewell · 12/09/2022 13:33

I don't actually really need or want to appear thin etc. I just often read threads on mumsnet where they say fat women get treated differently. I don't really want that though of course I know that it is wrong to treat people differently based on their size, but often the world isn't fair. logically, as long as you are happy and healthy, it shouldn't matter.

Yes, that much is true. I felt almost invisible when I was over weight not so much since I lost it. It can be very subtle, just like a salesperson smiling at you when they serve you at the till but it does seem to cumulative. So it depends whether you feel like it would make a difference in your outlook.

And really, a wider or slightly lower neckline or wearing a belt or more tailored fit is not at all indecent. We are a social animal - there is nothing wrong with acknowledging and being considerate of societal preferences.

I am five feet tall, really short. I am definitely not skinny haha. Most girls my age from my country and of my ethnicity are shopping in the kids department or wearing size 6.

I would get an appointment with a fashion advisor so here like John Lewis. I think you could’ve equally as comfortable in some more flattering dresses.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/09/2022 13:38

I agree with previous posters, you look like a size 12/14. Those dresses aren't flattering. The last one is very dowdy and ageing. Without seeing your face, you could easily be 60+ in that last photo (whereas it sounds like you're a lot younger?). The shoes aren't helping either.

Shorter (i.e. above knee) length would be much more flattering on you.

3peassuit · 12/09/2022 13:39

You don’t look fat but the clothes swamp you which is not a great look. I think you’d look good in more tailored styles.

Cliffordthebigreddog · 12/09/2022 13:40

I think frumpy and a bit overweight / unfit. The dresses you’ve chosen (and the shoes) are far from flattering.

VatofTea · 12/09/2022 13:41

You don't look fat, you look comfy.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/09/2022 13:41

Your figure is fine but those dresses are drab drab drab. We need a serious discussion re those awful shoes too!

GreenGreenGrassBlue · 12/09/2022 13:42

Your clothes make you look older than your years. I’d have you down as a 12-14. Your style could be improved.

CornishGem1975 · 12/09/2022 13:42

Not fat, but not a size 8/10 more like a size 12/14. Nothing wrong with that of course, that's what I am, but if I were closer to a size 8 I wouldn't want to look like a size 14! Maybe go for a more flattering style? (Which is hard right now as all clothes just seem to be styled on massive sacks)

VintageVest · 12/09/2022 13:42

You look lovely and slim in the light blue dress, but the other two aren't doing you any favours. They are hiding your waist. In the first pic it looks like you need a better bra too.

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2022 13:52

I'm just here for the doggy in the window

Fink · 12/09/2022 13:53

You definitely need a better fitting bra, I'd start there. After that, if you're happy with your style then go for it, I don't think it massively flatters you but if that's what you want to wear then go for it; you certainly don't look big enough to get any of the negative judgements that go with being overweight.

but its so cold in the UK (most of the time).. I do have some shorter dresses but i wear them in summer or abroad.

Also my MIL is an orthodox jew so i kinda prefer to wear longer dresses when I see her (which is most weekends). I used to live with her before we bought our own place which is actually when my love affair with long dresses began (plus her house was freezing), plus I started going to synagogue (no official dress code as its a liberal one but no one is wearing short dresses there either, most of the attendees are also over 80).

I reckon that they don't flatter your height, you're tiny! At five foot the dresses are drowning you. The scale is all off, the first one hangs off your boobs, and gives you no shape, the second one is just a bit odd altogether, nothing to do with who's in it, and the light blue one is hitting you in the most unflattering part of your leg. They simultaneously look like you're wearing your mums clothes and all really age you, so sorry if that's brutal, you're gorgeous, it's not you it's the dresses!

DahliaDreamer · 12/09/2022 13:57

amifat2022 · 12/09/2022 13:14

I think i like those dresses because they feel the most comfortable! And I get really bloated before my period- as in i look pregnant. And this was the case even when I was 15 and 37 kg! It usually subsides after my period. so tight clothing looks quite bad at that time of the month.

How tall are you? 37kg is a seriously low weight.

Workawayxx · 12/09/2022 13:58

Definitely not fat, a healthy weight I'd say. Although I don't think the dresses are the most flattering, they drown you a little bit but I can see they'd be super comfy! I think something v neck and more fitted, maybe brighter colours, would make the most of your figure: www.nobodyschild.com/outlet/lenzingtm-ecoverotm-red-and-white-alexa-mini-dress.html

MattDillonsEyebrows · 12/09/2022 13:59

Focussing on the length of the dresses.

You look like you've got amazing legs!! The first dress is the perfect length for you, the second looks ok, the third dress is the wrong length for you.

I think the current just below the knee and mid calf are really difficult lengths for most people to wear unless you're tall and willowy. I thought even MM looked a bit swamped in her mid calf dress yesterday. I can't wait for the trend to go shorter or longer again.

Fatballs · 12/09/2022 14:01

You could be the late Queen in the last picture.

SingingSands · 12/09/2022 14:02

I'd say 50% unflattering dresses and 50% photographer skills. My DH has never taken a flattering photo of me - and we've been a couple for 25 years 😄

It's harder when you're short as dresses look good on websites, but the models are all about 5'9"!

Agree that a few style tweaks - clothing and footwear, and you'd look more stylish and put together. Searching on Instagram or Pinterest for "petite fashion" "petite style" etc will give you some good pointers.

StopStartStop · 12/09/2022 14:05

You're fine but those clothes... throw them out.
Are you well supported? I think you could make more of your phenomenal bust and great legs. You probably have a lovely waist hiding in there, under the acres of flowery print. Ban flowery print from your life. Go through your wardrobe and send all the print to charity.
