Do I look fat in this

I am a size 8/10 but i think I do shop at shops where the sizing is generous like seasalt, crew clothing, boden, joules etc. second dress is from outnet and by a designer called rachel zoe. I have always been petite so generally eat whatever I want but now that I am nearly 30, possibly this is not a great idea...

And I don't usually pay much attention to my figure. I focus a lot on makeup (which I love) and that takes 10 minutes everyday so after that and brushing my teeth and putting on contact lens, i just grab a dress, put it on, drag a brush through my hair and zoom out of the door. So I don't actually notice much how my figure looks until I go on holiday and my DH takes photos of me...

If I was to try to look as unattractive as possible, I would wear those dresses.

That's a bit harsh

imissedabit · 12/09/2022 16:35

I don't even know what 'department-store' make-up is!

WhoppingBigBackside · 12/09/2022 16:36

@amifat2022 , you are young and with good skin, stop wasting your money on expensive make up (there's fab stuff in Boots and Superdrug that do the job), and buy clothes that suit that aren't aimed at babyboomers.

Buy some comfortable clothes and shoes that aren't frumpy.

You do look a bit overweight.

thank you, love it!

i did have one bad experience with a new look jumper which fell to pieces. But maybe I shouldn't write off the whole brand. A lot of fast fashion brands are for people who throw away their clothesr regularly but for environmental reasons, I would rather not do that. I am happy buying charity shop clothes in theory too and do own quite a few charity shop dresses but I find I don't wear most of them as often as my new ones. I am not sure why...

Not sure why this is bold?!

I think the quality of New Look is fine. I've had stuff from there that lasted years. Some of it is cheap tat. But I have always liked them for cheap dresses that I can just throw on.

I'm 5'1" and these type of dresses are perfect length on me too. I like them cos I can wear them with boots and they'll do if I need to go into the office, school run or casual night out.

I love ysl foundation lol, and i have a cream highlighter from chanel. nars primer and blush. charlotte tilbury contour palette. my eyeliner is from loreal so its not all like that but its that sort of thing. I used to wear cheap makeup but it really doesn't last as long. And I think I feel happier spending my money on makeup because I wear makeup everyday and so feel happy when I put it on as opposed to a dress which I can only wear max once a week?

You aren't fat, but the dresses do you not favours! You clearly have great boobs so maybe a v neck would be better. The second dress (aystmetrical) needs to go though

WhoppingBigBackside · 12/09/2022 16:40

@amifat2022 , but it does last just as long. You just need to shop carefully.

What is the point of wearing nice makeup and wearing the equivalent of a sack?

I disagree that fast fashion always equals poor quality and is for people who throw away their clothes, obviously the quality isn’t as good as expensive brands but if I’m buying something new it usually comes from primark or H&M (I can’t afford higher end stores) and they last me years, I’ve never had anything my fall apart on me. If I do stop wearing something I either sell on or give to charity.
I do think you could get more for your money if you shopped at cheaper places and the brands you are buying from imo are very overpriced. You have lots of suggestions on this thread, you may not be interested in changing your outfits or style but personally I think you could feel a lot more confident and comfortable in clothes and shoes that flatter your figure.

Yogagrandmum · 12/09/2022 16:42

They’re horrid dresses.

Mummysharkargggggggg · 12/09/2022 16:45

Not fat but you look shapeless in those outfits.
If I was a size 8 I'd be wearing fitted clothes to show off my figure for sure

I wear my makeup for me, I suppose. Its a relaxing ritual for me.I used to happily wear makeup even during the pandemic when it was just me and DH at home. For me, clothes are just something I put on my back as generally society frowns upon nakedness in polite company!

I do feel 'safer' being more covered up. Was molested quite a few times as a teen and decided that I didn't really like it!

I prefer dresses, too. New Look have some brilliant offerings; Tu at Sainsbury's can be fantastic (and not too expensive - definitely cheaper than Crew Clothing!); H&M are good; ASOS have got LOADS; I've had some nice ones from Next; Dorothy Perkins can be okay (they just seem to have a lot available so you need patience to wade through them); Monsoon has some really lovely stuff... and all of these brands can be found on eBay for even less.

To be honest, I think your 'these'll do and probably go with everything because they're black' shoes are more problematic. They bring down pretty much anything you put on (and they really don't go with everything!).

GettingStuffed · 12/09/2022 16:53

I am fat, but shapeless shifts make me look bigger they do the same to you. Is there anyone they do suit?

TabithaTittlemouse · 12/09/2022 16:56

You are not ‘fat’ in the slightest op.
They do not do anything for you sadly.

Froggyeye · 12/09/2022 17:01

Please stop misusing "petite"!

lindyloo57 · 12/09/2022 17:04

I agree with everyone, you don't look fat, but the style of dresses does nothing for you, specially the last one at a awkward length.

Doubleraspberry · 12/09/2022 17:06

I do think you need to think again about bras. Victoria's Secret measurement isn't up to much. You are very likely to have a smaller back size and larger cup than you think. If in London, get yourself to a Bravissimo or Rigby and Peller for a fitting (you say tube so assume you are!). You'd immediately get a more defined shape in your top half, whatever you wore.

And I am a fellow wearer of flat shoes but the ones you're wearing are very dark and quite clumpy so aren't flattering your figure very much. I'd echo the suggestion of trainers/sandals in the summer, and there are loads of comfortable shoes that are sort of nerdy-fashionable that might work better. Camper? This sort of this is fairly cheap and cheerful: www.pavers.co.uk/products/wide-fit-touch-fastening-mary-jane-shoes-hak33013-319-894?variant=40293839831125

Purpleavocado · 12/09/2022 17:12

You've got great legs and great boobs, but its hard to see that under such formless shapes. If you like dresses is get more of a wrap shape and v neck.the just below the knee length needs to either be a midi with a nipped in waist, or a few inches above the knee. The black shoes need to be replaced with sandles, boots and white trainers.

Talipesmum · 12/09/2022 17:26

OP I like the fabrics you choose and have a huge amount of sympathy with sticking with comfy shoes. And I agree that if you’re used to wearing nice cotton or linen etc it feels pretty uncomfortable and fiddly in other fabrics. Also you’re right, everyone is interested in different things and also you have a perfect right to cover up and I understand why you do so.

I wonder if maybe you’re also comparing yourself to others from your country and not mentally letting yourself choose something a little more flattering because you can’t see yourself in that way? If you’re totally honest with yourself, are you thinking that people in your country might judge you for showing you have a figure?

Also yes, you came on here to ask if you looked fat or not. No, you don’t, and likely if people see you moving around, it’ll be clear you’re slim. But lots of people are saying that you could make a few easy changes without compromising your boundaries and look lots better. Try out a John Lewis personal shopper? I know a few (non clothes obsessed) people who’ve done this just for a new perspective. Keep your boundary of liking the fabrics, but play around a little with necklines and length. And I get it re the shoes - but maybe a tan colour would be more neutral? Try on a few other Clarks styles. Loads of great comfy leather trainers that seem to be more “acceptable” with dresses so there’s no need to compromise comfort.

WehIstMir · 12/09/2022 17:42

Don't know about your dresses but the beagle in the window is rather stylish with its smart hat worn at a rakish angle.

BabyDreamers · 12/09/2022 17:55

Not fat in the slightest. Nobody would look at you and think you're fat. You look lovely.

Digitalisaredangerous · 12/09/2022 18:13

Silly money but I think this shape would look lovely on you.

lljkk · 12/09/2022 18:15

Sorry OP, and no idea why this is in bold, but frumpy is what I thought of those pictures. You may have great boobs/waist/legs, but those dresses don't seem to flatter your best parts. I'm all for comfort over any other factor, btw, but I think you want something that flatters as well.

Mojoj · 12/09/2022 18:19

You don't look fat but those dresses do nothing for you. They are shapeless.

Mabelstearooms · 12/09/2022 18:45

You don't look fat because you're not fat. You're a size 8-10 so you know you're not fat. Your clothes are shapeless and a bit frumpy, especially for a 29 year old. Cold shoulder dresses are never flattering and make anyone look more rounded. And you don't pose for photos properly.

Maybe you need to book a session with a personal stylist. You don't need to wear shapeless outfits like this to be comfortable, flattering and hide bloating.
