Do I look fat in this

amifat2022 · 12/09/2022 13:04

I am a size 8/10 but i think I do shop at shops where the sizing is generous like seasalt, crew clothing, boden, joules etc. second dress is from outnet and by a designer called rachel zoe. I have always been petite so generally eat whatever I want but now that I am nearly 30, possibly this is not a great idea...

And I don't usually pay much attention to my figure. I focus a lot on makeup (which I love) and that takes 10 minutes everyday so after that and brushing my teeth and putting on contact lens, i just grab a dress, put it on, drag a brush through my hair and zoom out of the door. So I don't actually notice much how my figure looks until I go on holiday and my DH takes photos of me...

I wrote the above thread about a week ago. There were lots of dresses posted in response. Why in the name of all that's good are you wearing those awful brogues? Heels are your friend. They add height but they also proportion things a little better. I would never wear a dress with flat shoes. I would wear casual clothing if sightseeing. It just looks odd wearing a dress and flats (unless the dress length is above the knee). Your boobs look massive. I have discovered the underwired, non-padded bra and I wear little nipple covers under the bra to ensure that my nipples don't pop out. Padded bras just add. Padded bras are generally for people with no boobs worth mentioning.

Something like this shape (I would say you would need a 12 maybe) and then get the skirt length taken up? But you need to start wearing heels! You're a short ass like me.

Please don't wear any more floral and frumpy outfits.

I don't know where you get off speaking to people like that.

And the notion that it looks 'odd' wearing a dress with flats is many years out of date (if it ever applied). Look at fashion websites and shop windows. I spent this summer wearing midi-length dresses with low-top trainers.

And the pp who says you can't wear a dress and walk, come off it.

If I don't walk, I can't live. I live 0.6 miles, a 10 minute walk from a tube station. My office is another 10 minutes away from the tube station. Thats 40 minutes of walking everyday and doesn't even include grocery shopping, going to the vet and 1 million other things that all involve at the very minimum walking to the bus stop or a tube station. I walk in my black office dresses. Some women wear trainers for the commute and switch to new shoes, but since we started hybrid working/hot desking, we only have lockers for our belongings so cramping a pair of shoes in there feels silly.

Also absolute lolz at suggesting workwear and heels which is very 2014 to someone who is clearly looking for casual options

She wants to know if she looks fat? It’s in the title.

No you don’t look fat, however, as others have said, you could look even slimmer wearing a different style.

If “not fat” is enough, then you are good to go. There’s nothing wrong with having your own style and wearing what you feel comfortable in.

I'm not sure what you want from this thread, OP.

Whoops meant to quote this when answering above ^

IrisVersicolor · 12/09/2022 15:55

This website has a selection of loose linen summer dresses:

Stevie6 · 12/09/2022 15:56

You were 37kg when you were 15?!?

Also how old are you now? I would have guessed you at a size 12 too tbh. You didn't ask but I don't think the shoes are helping with the dresses either

middleofthelittle · 12/09/2022 15:58

So you're 29? Your outfits are those of someone in their 60's at least.

Wear v neck style tops, and skirts/dresses that are longer and have a belt round the waist. Midi shirt dresses would look nice

Bin the shoes they're awful

You don't look fat at all

You're wearing the wrong size clothes, you're a 12 and M.

Not sure if you think I'm disagreeing with you wearing flats, OP, but if so you're mistaken; I was saying how silly it was of another poster to suggest you 'can't' wear flats with a dress, or walk in one.

Funny 🙄

Just not sure what she wants from the ongoing thread. She's getting a lot of people posting pointers (including me) and some others being quite rude. She keeps rejecting any advice and saying she just wants to be comfortable and not look fat "by British standards" (Confused) which she doesn't. Does she actually want of this feedback? I'd guess not.

i tried on size 12, it was too big for me!

You should wear wrap around styles with a V neck and fuller skirt.

The dresses in the photos don't flatter you.

CampRedLeaf · 12/09/2022 16:07

If you like loose dresses and florals, new Look have loads of dresses similar to this one Dress

They're cheap and cheerful. You could just put them on with black tights and you're comfy shoes. And just look so much more modern and flattering.

Josette77 · 12/09/2022 16:12

Not fat, not thin.
You are short though so look bigger than a size 8.;
The dresses you wear look better on thin willowy figures. I'd wear something more fitted.
Also they hit your legs at a place that makes you look frumpier.

thank you, love it!

i did have one bad experience with a new look jumper which fell to pieces. But maybe I shouldn't write off the whole brand. A lot of fast fashion brands are for people who throw away their clothesr regularly but for environmental reasons, I would rather not do that. I am happy buying charity shop clothes in theory too and do own quite a few charity shop dresses but I find I don't wear most of them as often as my new ones. I am not sure why...

OnaBegonia · 12/09/2022 16:20

I'm afraid I agree, those dresses are shapeless and the shoes belong in a care home.
You're not even 30, no need to dress like you're 85. My eldest DD is 28 and would never buy these brands.
Flattering clothes don't need to be uncomfortable or revealing.

Aria999 · 12/09/2022 16:20

I have this problem, 32DDD and fairly short so anything that shape makes me look like the side of a house.

You probably need clothes that slightly hug the very slim mid torso area between your boobs and your belly.

Onlytheriver · 12/09/2022 16:22

I have a pretty strict budget for clothes as I would rather prioritize buying my department store makeup and going on holidays and eating out (and overpaying my mortgage/saving to buy a bigger flat). Its generally a maximum/guide price of £35-50 for dresses (£50 if I really like it) and £35-50 for shoes (so I would only buy those shoes on discount even if I liked them). And only 1 pair of shoes, 1 pair of boots, 1 pair of slippers for swimming, 1 pair of trainers, 1 pair of work heels, 1 pair of going out heels (in addition to the shoes I already own). Thats why I gravitated towards dresses after university as I was already saving to buy our flat (and a dress was an outfit in itself).\

Oh indeed? So you need to dress like a curtain to save money? You're buying from the most overpriced horrendous shops in London. And yes, you do look overweight in those photos. There's no helping some people. Why come on here asking whether you look fat and then posting photos of you looking fat? Are we being fattist?

middleofthelittle · 12/09/2022 16:23

@amifat2022
The first dress you're wearing is too small, and if you're buying loose shapeless things you probably can fit into a 10.
But in flattering clothes that suit your figure you're a 12.

Either way whatever your clothes size the ones you are buying are unflattering. You've been told this 100x on this thread.

Perhaps you might take up weaving?

Petrar · 12/09/2022 16:24

Not fat at all, but the dresses are frumpy/lifeless.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/09/2022 16:26

amifat2022 · 12/09/2022 13:24

I don't actually really need or want to appear thin etc. I just often read threads on mumsnet where they say fat women get treated differently. I don't really want that though of course I know that it is wrong to treat people differently based on their size, but often the world isn't fair. logically, as long as you are happy and healthy, it shouldn't matter.

I too am confused at what the point if the thread is.you ask if you look fat but now you say you don't care if you do.

The stance, the dresses are not doing any favours for you at all.
The shoes you say how can you walk around all day? Wear trainers like sketchers 🤷

imissedabit · 12/09/2022 16:28

If I was to try to look as unattractive as possible, I would wear those dresses.

nomoreflyingfucks · 12/09/2022 16:30

Op you could be the most beautiful woman in the world and those dresses wouldn't suit you, it's the length. Honestly I always think models struggle to pull off the just below the knee length in bare legs, even in tights / leggings it's not a great look (just my opinion though, and it probably shouldn't count as I'm a jeans and t.shirt slob type girl!)
But to answer your question no you don't look fat, and it's clear you have a good figure.

imissedabit · 12/09/2022 16:31

Is this the Jewish equivalent of modest Muslim dress or something?

I mean I haven't bought a flat yet, but goodness me. Are we being trolled or something? Why drop the 'Jewish' religion into it? I'm not getting this thread at all.
