Do I look fat in this

I am a size 8/10 but i think I do shop at shops where the sizing is generous like seasalt, crew clothing, boden, joules etc. second dress is from outnet and by a designer called rachel zoe. I have always been petite so generally eat whatever I want but now that I am nearly 30, possibly this is not a great idea...

And I don't usually pay much attention to my figure. I focus a lot on makeup (which I love) and that takes 10 minutes everyday so after that and brushing my teeth and putting on contact lens, i just grab a dress, put it on, drag a brush through my hair and zoom out of the door. So I don't actually notice much how my figure looks until I go on holiday and my DH takes photos of me...

The point is that whether you're a size 6 or a size 10, you are slim/small and your clothes are not showing that.

I totally understand not wanting to wear heels. But there's a huge selection of alternatives that would work from trainers to brogues that would all look better and be more flattering on your legs.

If you really insist on that style of dress, I think I'd go for solid colours or block colours rather than the ditsy little prints. Those sort of prints work for cute, flirty little dresses but that's not how they're worn on you.

What about a wrap dress of some sort - could be very comfortable and would cinch you in at the waist somewhat? Or again, if you like the stores you're buying from, just make slightly different choices? eg, from Boden, what about this or this one. The second one especially isn't one I'd like, but it seems to be more in line with your preferences, but with a little more shape?

Bunce1 · 12/09/2022 14:55

I think you're missing the point, the "size" on the dress is immaterial, it is all about the fit and style.

I have a size 14 jumper, it looked "oversized" and boxy on me, teamed with slim mom jeans and some high top Nike trainers it is a great look for the school run. It doesn't matter that I am a size 8/10 in reality.

TolkiensFallow · 12/09/2022 14:56

You are just dressing in frumpy unflattering clothes. You don’t need to wear tight clothes but something with a bit more structure would help… the length is also off on you, I think you either need knee length or maxi but midi/calf length is doing nothing for you.

Hollywolly1 · 12/09/2022 14:56

I think you look lovely, I like the green dress where you are on the stairs best then the one in the garden followed by the one in front of the window.I would change those shoes though as the look quite dark with those dresses

I wrote the above thread about a week ago. There were lots of dresses posted in response. Why in the name of all that's good are you wearing those awful brogues? Heels are your friend. They add height but they also proportion things a little better. I would never wear a dress with flat shoes. I would wear casual clothing if sightseeing. It just looks odd wearing a dress and flats (unless the dress length is above the knee). Your boobs look massive. I have discovered the underwired, non-padded bra and I wear little nipple covers under the bra to ensure that my nipples don't pop out. Padded bras just add. Padded bras are generally for people with no boobs worth mentioning.

Something like this shape (I would say you would need a 12 maybe) and then get the skirt length taken up? But you need to start wearing heels! You're a short ass like me.

Please don't wear any more floral and frumpy outfits.

Not sure what you’re looking for OP? People seem to be agreeing that you don’t look fat at all, but the dresses aren’t great for you and that a different style dress/different shoes that would flatter your slim figure more. Do you want suggestions?

but the tube is so dirty, wouldn't pale shoes just scuff immediately? I wear the same shoes everyday and honestly hate switching around.Thats why i go for black loafer shoes (usually from clarks). Can walk for hours. Tough enough to withstand everyone stepping on my feet (it really hurts). Can be worn with and without tights/socks. Maybe bronze or silver shoes are better though- www.moshulu.co.uk/product/petrel-leather-1623#?variant=205

I wear white pumps on the tube, and just wash them every now and then.

imissedabit · 12/09/2022 15:03

Don't wear a dress when you're going to be walking! You wear casual clothes. And don't ever buy a floral print again. Black is the new black.

Rosehugger · 12/09/2022 15:04

Don't wear a dress when you're going to be walking!

Why? I wear a dress to work most days and walk about 4 miles in it.

Onlytheriver · 12/09/2022 15:04

I work in the city and it's very common for all of us to wear trainers on the commute and pack heels in the bag for the office.

Kenworthington · 12/09/2022 15:04

Im absolutely appalling at judging size and age. However just came on to say you appear to be on holiday in my city so hello and welcome!

I’m sorry op but those are so ugly! You are so young but those shoes in my mind are for a much older generation!
Honestly I’d invest in a pair of comfortable black ankle boots, they could be flat or have a small bit they will still look so much nicer than the black shoes you have on. They really do clash with the dresses. For day trips and holidays in the summer I’d wear sandals or comfortable plimsoll style shoes or white trainers, then you don’t have to worry about them getting mucky as they are reserved for days out only.

Oh re your previous post, I don't wear trousers sorry. They feel so uncomfortable, i always feel sorry for men! I even go cycling in a dress (with shorts underneath).

I do own a dress from warehouse. I used to shop in asos at university but was very unimpressed by quality (but at that time, i had a tiny budget for clothes so not much choice in that matter!) I walk into zara sometimes, but everything looks decidely flammable! I then walk out. I realize the clothes might be unflattering but I always feel very comfortable in them! I guess maybe looking plump is the price to pay!

I think you're yanking our chain now. Those loafers are hideous.

Well done OP

Twawmyarse · 12/09/2022 15:09

OMG - ive often wondered who wears those hideous moshulu shoes!

Please for the love of god OP do not listen to that poster!

Appleblum · 12/09/2022 15:09

I think you look best in the green dress. The others make you look very top heavy and that can be ageing in itself. Your shoes are fine but don't really match the dresses you've chosen.

Twawmyarse · 12/09/2022 15:13

Oh - I just realised it was YOU who posted them OP 😂

No. just no.

Can you afford veja trainers? Ive gone off them myself as everyone round here wears them but they do look trendy-ish and inoffensive.

or if you want loafers go for something more like these - much younger and trendier.

I have a pair of black ankle boots from moshulu. they are out in october onwards. i don't actually have any photos of myself in them though I do remember wearing them quite a lot for work.; maybe I don't usually wear them on the weekends.

i have approximately 1 billion black dresses in my wardrobe. I exaggerate but I mainly wear them for work. But I don't take pictures of myself at work. I go walking every weekend so I would never wear a dress if that was the case... I don't drive either.

And sorry I love floral prints :)

the chain detail looks quite ostentatious in my mind. And the leather looks hard so I will be bleeding all the way. I think we have very different tastes.

I have a pretty strict budget for clothes as I would rather prioritize buying my department store makeup and going on holidays and eating out (and overpaying my mortgage/saving to buy a bigger flat). Its generally a maximum/guide price of £35-50 for dresses (£50 if I really like it) and £35-50 for shoes (so I would only buy those shoes on discount even if I liked them). And only 1 pair of shoes, 1 pair of boots, 1 pair of slippers for swimming, 1 pair of trainers, 1 pair of work heels, 1 pair of going out heels (in addition to the shoes I already own). Thats why I gravitated towards dresses after university as I was already saving to buy our flat (and a dress was an outfit in itself).

If I’m wearing a longer dress I tend to go for these styles.
The waist is cinched in and they can be quite flattering, there’s so many shops that have petite ranges now to prevent dresses coming up too long as well but you want something that gives you more shape or throw on a waist belt/add some accessories to make your dresses look more trendy.

I'm not sure what you want from this thread, OP.

I just wanted to know if I looked fat based on British standards. If I don't look fat based on british standards, its good enough. Based on the standards in my home country, i would look fat (even if i was wearing the most flattering dress) but to be fair anyone who isn't a size 0 is fat in my home country and besides that, I don't live there. 50 kg is considered fat in my country even if you are average height.

I am a healthy bmi so not worried about that front. Even if I was, that wouldn't be about how things looked.
