Lips - is this what people are aspiring to these days?

An old boyfriend has shared photos to advertise a friend's beauty salon. I know I'm not their target audience, but I'm still shocked that this is what women are supposedly looking for these days.
I do get that if you have thin lips it'd be nice to have them plumped up a bit. But these are so clearly fake.
Am I just an old fuddy-Duddy with no idea? Confused

@HumunaHey

Really???

It's hardly the same.

The lips in the photo look overinflated , unnatural.

There's just no comparison at all

What a racist comment!!!

WhereDidIGoNext · 06/07/2021 08:45

Any surgery which makes someone’s features look completely unnatural is a bad thing in my view. Enhancing what you’ve got is one thing, but making yourself look plastic and Barbie like is quite another

Backhills · 06/07/2021 08:53

The salon where I go to for waxing regularly shares before and after photos for lips, lashes and eyebrows. I almost always think the before pictures look best.

butterpuffed · 06/07/2021 08:54

I can't understand why women who have their lips plumped up so much that they look unnatural, actually think it looks attractive.

Mrsjayy · 06/07/2021 08:58

I wonder what it feels like ? Is it numb or lumpy these are questions I was dying to ask but didn't! I mean It's their lips to do as they wish but why this "full" look ,

Zilla1 · 06/07/2021 09:00

Normalising and helping to condition often vulnerable young women to undergo sometimes risky procedures by often under-trained or untrained people with long-term implications for profit. Contemptible.

Zilla1 · 06/07/2021 09:08

Let's see some before and after photographs, the after being 18 months after over-inflation with no follow-on filler to see the lasting effect on the tissue. Let's seem some lifetime costs with top ups every 6-12 months after 30 years of treatment and let's see some photos of what the lips look like after 30 years of treatments as I see some late teenagers having this after their minds see this as normal/essential given all the paid-for influencers and TV shows. Contemptible.

AmIPeriOrAreYouJustAnnoying · 06/07/2021 09:14

Vile.

Feelinghothothottoday · 06/07/2021 09:15

Looking like a sex doll represents status and wealth. Oh my god! What have we done to our daughters? So men have rings, cars etc and women have long nails and inflatable lips.

I remember watching love island once and a male contestant said he loves the fake look. Said a lot about him really.

PeppermintTea2021 · 06/07/2021 09:19

The current aesthetic seems to me to be very pornified - sex doll lips, big butts, filters to remove any trace of humanity, passive expressions. It's horrible. The fact young people are getting surgery to look this way is awful. I was a very gawky speccy teenager with terrible overbite etc and thankfully all I had to aspire to was a bubble perm (which didn't help) and blue eyeshadow (same). Trying to look like an actual dolly would have been not only impossible but depressing!

HumunaHey · 06/07/2021 09:31

@summerleaves How on earth was my comment racist? I'm pointing out how the comments likening full lips to baboons and saying they look awful is rude.

Many black women do have full lips! (Pic attached which I think looks beautiful). It's one thing to criticise cosmetic procedures and that industry. Completely different to just mock people's appearance.

Naturally full lips are a completely different thing to inflated lips.

The photo of the lady you posted shows natural lips in proportion with natural facial structure surrounding them and with normal lines on them. NOTHING like the OP photo where the lips are smooth and look abnormal.

To say black women have inflated lips that look ANYTHING like the clown lips in the first photo is racist.

Smokeymirror · 06/07/2021 09:43

It’s totally different on a black person as it looks natural, everyone knows black people have larger lips and they look lovely as they compliment the rest of their features . It’s very rare to see a white person with lips like the girl in the above photo and they don’t have the other features to balance them out so when they do so it does look fake. I’m sorry if I said anything racist or offensive in my post I tried to be careful while getting my point across.

Miseryisabutterfly · 06/07/2021 09:53

@ThePearlOfDumbarton I have naturally very full lips. Men have described them as blow job lips in the past (which I hated). I even remember a man saying to me as a child that the boys would love me when I grew up. I didn’t understand this at the time and am so disgusted now thinking about it. Anyway, I digress… does the fact that I have lips that have been described as such mean that the man I married is a scumbag? Given my looks does it mean any man who finds me attractive is of bad character? That’s offensive to me.

lazylinguist · 06/07/2021 09:56

The lips in the OP's picture look nothing remotely like any natural lips I've ever seen on a black person anyway! There is nothing at all wrong or unattractive about bigger lips. It's the weird, artificially inflated, plasticky look that's so horrible.

Miseryisabutterfly · 06/07/2021 09:58

I am not black, does that mean my naturally big lips don’t look natural?!

The key word here is natural.

Naturally full lips are attractive.

If you've paid good money to get an exaggerated inflated look that's something else altogether.

lazylinguist · 06/07/2021 10:00

Not at all, Miseryisabutterfly. First of all, a person is rarely attracted to someone based on one particular feature. And secondly, I don't think larger lips ever look at all 'pornified' if they are the natural lips that come with your face!

HumunaHey · 06/07/2021 10:04

@Summerleaves But I'm not the one saying the first pic or the pic I posted look like "clown lips" and "baboon butts"Hmm.

And you will argue that the black lady's lips looks fine (which I agree with!) but it's a fact that black women HAVE been mocked for having (natural) fuller lips. Mocking people's appearance, natural or otherwise, is not cool imo. Most people who have such work done are usually deeply insecure. I'm not sure mocking them helps that.

Pinuporc · 06/07/2021 10:05

I'm not a fan of them but they seem popular.
My teen DD has naturally got quite full lips (I havent!) so I'm hoping she wouldnt be tempted to go for lip fillers (from the point of view of safety/chance of infection as much as anything)

LunaNorth · 06/07/2021 10:05

That mouth looks like a cervix.

BeforetheFlood · 06/07/2021 10:06

Criticising the fashion for artificially vastly over-inflated lips on white women is no way passing negative judgement on black women with naturally fuller lips. I'd say it's a symptom of a racist, misogynist society that tells women that, to be attractive, they need to be a sort of pick and mix assembly of 'parts', taken from women of different ethnicities and designed for the male gaze and male pleasure. Big breasts, tiny waist, big butt. Large, slanting, cat-like eyes. Straight, silky hair. Full lips. Small nose. Tanned skin, but not too dark. Combinations of features that exist together naturally with vanishing rarity in real life, so it's all a huge trick of the media and the cosmetics industry, which means young women spend money they can't afford chasing a goal that they're never going to achieve.

Miseryisabutterfly · 06/07/2021 10:09

My lips for the record. I have been asked in the past if I have had filler, I was insulted by that.

100% with you @HumunaHey half black and my lips look "inflated". I do wonder what some of these posters would think of me...

Like I get that fake lips can look way too much (and every black person I know thinks the same) but there's a difference between comparisons to baboons bum or whatever- and saying they're disproportionate [with other features] for example
