Lips - is this what people are aspiring to these days?

An old boyfriend has shared photos to advertise a friend's beauty salon. I know I'm not their target audience, but I'm still shocked that this is what women are supposedly looking for these days.
I do get that if you have thin lips it'd be nice to have them plumped up a bit. But these are so clearly fake.
Am I just an old fuddy-Duddy with no idea? Confused

@GrumpyTerrier

Look at all the people on this thread pretending most of the comments arent just bitchy.

Yes there is a discussion to be had about pornification and pressure on women to look a certain way etc but saying that someone's lips look like they could unblock a toilet etc, isn't that.

In themselves, lip fillers arent a big deal. They are temporary and can be dissolved at any time. The majority who have fillers only have a bit and it looks natural (sorry all those who desperately want this to be untrue-- it is indeed, true).

Massive lips certainly wouldn't be the first ridiculous fashion that came and went. I personally think it looks bad (as do laminated brows and huge nails and wot not) but to many, it looks good. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc.

The world will definitely be better if we don't slate things just cos we dont like or understand them. Better to keep chipping away constructively at the pressures to look a particular way.

Excellent post

Lips that have been filled to this extreme size just look awful. As though the person is suffering anaphylaxis. I agree with pp that there's a definite trend with some women to want an aggressively unnatural look, they want people to know they've spent money on their face. They want their forehead to be frozen and they want their lips to be unnaturally supersized. Similar to the way obviously fake breast implants were popular back in the 90s and 00s, whereas that trend has kind of fallen out of favour now (breast implants are still popular but a more natural teardrop shape seems to be in).

But what's wild is that this industry is unregulated. More or less anyone can set up shop and start injecting people's faces with fillers. I remember reading that back in the 1950s a breast augmentation meant having silicone injected straight into the breast tissue, and I found that quite shocking. But this is the same thing really.

Phantasmo · 06/07/2021 12:54

And I'm not really in agreement with this 'kumbaya, we all make our choices and it's rude to say anything unsupportive' vibe. We're all affected by this trend to normalise extreme augmentation. It's fine to state that you think it looks shit.

areoplanecakerake · 06/07/2021 12:57

Everything is strange now. I have big lips naturally, although it's more the bottom one and I was taken the piss out for it constantly at school. Oh how beauty changes. Same with having muscly chunky thighs. A guy at the gym asked me how I train leg to get them like that, when it just my shape and I rarely trained legs. I used to hate them and Old KK made it desirable.

Yep
Millymog · 06/07/2021 13:10

areoplanecakerake

agreed.

When I was at school it was a standing and long running joke that women asked their partners "does my bum look big in this" and having a big backside was something somehow to try to avoid.

now-a-days with Kardashian culture people pay vast sums to increase the size of their butts.

i really think it is fashion and that men are incredibly influenced by and influence how women look. I recall my first boyfriend complaining that my tits were too small and at the age of 16 that really affected me - i longed for larger boobs. Thankfully i broke up with him and realised he was an idiot before i got much older and might have started actually looking into how to make that a reality....

SmileyClare · 06/07/2021 13:16

It seems so short sighted to inflate your lips to five times their size. It will cause stretching and damage to the skin and tissue, resulting in exaggerated wrinkling and sagging in later life, much like a deflated balloon.(unless you plan to have enormous plumped lips in your seventies or beyond).

Just looking at pictures of breasts that have large implants removed, or skin after extreme weight loss, demonstrates the irreversible stretching and resultant loose skin left behind.

I think some women will bitterly regret following this trend.

Naah- they'll just have more surgery to remove the loose bits.

+1

I also think the underlying suggestion that these women are too thick not able to make positive choices about how they would like to look just because their choices differ from the majority here (and therefore they MUST be tailoring their appearance to appease/attract men) really bloody offensive.

butterpuffed · 06/07/2021 14:30

I'd like to know what lips look like when they've been extremely pumped up and the filler has worn off. Do they look shrivelled ?

Feelinghothothottoday · 06/07/2021 15:58

Agree. It’s telling women to shut up again. Yet the pressure to fit in with this look and others is real. I have small breasts - is no one allowed to praise bog breasts in case they offend me.

SocksAndTheCity · 06/07/2021 16:17

"I think it looks shit (and therefore wouldn't have it done)" is one thing.

"I think she looks shit/ugly/ridiculous/like a toilet plunger" is something else altogether.

CookPassBabtridge · 06/07/2021 16:40

I've seen a couple in real life and it's like the contouring craze and the massive dark eyebrows.. looks amazing on instagram but in the cold light of day it all looks awful. The woman I know with lips like that can't speak very well and they look so swollen and sore.

Zilla1 · 06/07/2021 17:07

I recognise women have agency. Equally, everyone with a DD has skin in this game too. I know which side I stand in any perceived conflict between someone taking offence and cosmetic procedures on young women becoming normalised to make profit for manufactuers, 'clinics' and influencers. And that is without looking at the risible levels of 'training' non-HCPs and even HCPs need to take before they can perform some procedures.

Zilla1 · 06/07/2021 17:10

Grateful for any viewers' estimate what % of the Love Island women participants who appear fully natural without any cosmetic procedures?

AllisoninWunderland · 06/07/2021 17:27

I think it’s just a sad indictment of our society that young women want to/are having surgery and procedures to look essentially like porn stars.

There has always been pressure on women to look a certain way but for today’s generation of young women it’s sad that the aspirational look is so fake and plastic.

It’s not a look that can solely be achieved with make-up, hairdressers, clothing - as it was in ‘my day’ 80s/90s. It’s gone up a level to actually physically altering facial features and body parts.

I’m saddened watching Love Island. You can see how insecure a lot of the girls are and how looking a certain way is the holy grail for them. And it’s all to do with attracting and pleasing men. Which raises so many questions for us regarding the patriarchy and feminism.

Older women are falling for it as well though in some vain pursuit of 'youth' Botox, fillers etc.

Women of all ages are being told they're not good enough as they are to line the pockets of others.

Sad.

WhereDidIGoNext · 06/07/2021 17:37

Agree it is sad - and worrying. You make a good point that we used to simply enhance our looks with clothes hair and make up whereas now women often believe they have to change themselves through surgical processes, sometimes permanently, to make themselves look ok / right / attractive or whatever else. It’s pretty fucking awful actually.

unwuthering · 06/07/2021 17:39

The baboon's arse look, apart from looking sore now, will inevitably wrinkle really badly at some point as a result of this overstretching fad. But hey, tomorrow never comes when you are young.

Phantasmo · 06/07/2021 17:39

I watched the first two series of Love Island which I think were in '16 and '17 and for the most part the female contestants went in with natural faces, and had the lips/veneer makeovers after leaving the show. Whereas now they have the work done before even appearing on the show.
A bit of a barometer for how mainstream this has all become in 5 years.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 06/07/2021 17:49

I’m with you zilla

I look at my beautiful niece and hope that she is happy as she is.

I have no doubt she will be under pressure to conform to the Insta face. All her friends want to be famous. At what I don’t know. They are all yapping on about wrinkles. They are not even in their teens.

It makes my heart sore.

AnnieSnap · 06/07/2021 18:45

@Orf1abc

There's a big difference between taking the piss out of someone's natural appearance, and pointing out that some are undertaking procedures that make them look ridiculous.
Absolutely! This is not about belittling women, it’s belittling a ridiculous procedure that is expensive and sometimes dangerous!
AnnieSnap · 06/07/2021 18:56
@summerleaves How on earth was my comment racist? I'm pointing out how the comments likening full lips to baboons and saying they look awful is rude.

Many black women do have full lips! (Pic attached which I think looks beautiful). It's one thing to criticise cosmetic procedures and that industry. Completely different to just mock people's appearance.
The weird synthetic look of overfilled lip look nothing like the natural full lips of a black woman 🙄
