I mean it’s fine, but it’s so ubiquitous isn’t it? Why?

I remember suits and trainers being an NY trend in the 80s, women wore trainers to work and changed into heels in the office

Iggi999 · 20/06/2021 17:54

Right now I need to do some dress shopping Grin
Isn't part of it that the trainers sort of "dress down" the flowery dress so you don't look like a Laura Ashley model from the 80s?
I think wearing fabrics, colours and patterns that you think are beautiful must give a lot of women pleasure, whether it looks amazing or not.

@RaRaRasputinLoveMachine

My husband who is very into clothes and style thinks it looks terrible

Grin

I’m going to bet he wears pastel chino style shorts (probably in mint) is beardy with tat sleeves and wears some sort of wanky trilby style hat? Am I close?

PegasusReturns · 20/06/2021 19:10

@goose1964 I remember going to NYC aged 10 in mid 80s and being awestruck by the women with big hair, calf length minks and chunky white trainers. I spent the rest of my childhood aiming to be one of them Grin

If my DH had his way on my style of dress, I'd be in brown flat penny loafers with socks and a midi length pencil skirt with an Oxford button up business shirt😂
Nope! I'm in my Birkenstocks year round as I need my feet to be cool...tbf, I do have my everyday birks and then my fancier sparkly gold or silver ones for dress upGrin

RampantIvy · 20/06/2021 20:26

I am back in socks today as it is so cold Sad

Sweetpea1532 · 20/06/2021 20:28

Oh, forgot to add...I mostly wear knee length dresses with my birks...although I have one blue patterned midi dress made of rayon that I've worn for 25 years! The fabric washes beautifully and doesn't wrinkle.... I've worn it so much over the years that my poor DSis has had nightmares about me and my famous blue dress👗...and in most of our family's photos I'm in my blue dress...only way to tell that they weren't taken in the same year is to look at my hairdo. It never WAS in style, so no worries there.
Funny thing is..I get lots of compliments on my blue dressGrin

TheVolturi · 20/06/2021 20:35

In the 90s, I had a pastel pink strappy tennis dress from Bennetton, and I used to wear it with white Nike pumps. In my head I looked amazing, quite European and athletic 🤣. This trend reminds me of that, although I prefer Converse with a dress now as trainers feel to clumpy for me.

I really want to see this blue dress now! Grin Can you post a pic?!

In the 90s, I used to wear jeans with a crop fake fur coat and Adidas superstars. In my head I looked all expensive and "girl about town" like in the fashion magazines, but probably in reality I looked like a bit of mish-mash. (wasn't polished enough then to pull the look off).
Classicbrunette · 22/06/2021 22:32

i don’t understand it. so you have a flimsy floral dress and white trainers. your’re cold because of the dress and have hot feet because they’re wrapped in trainers, which are white but get dirty ! 🧐

Fuckinellitsme · 22/06/2021 22:49

I wear velvet midi dresses with black suede Puma Basket Heart glitter sole trainers or Adidas Sleek leopard print ones. That's my take on the trend and I love it - I'm a bit of a goth at heart so white trainers were never going to fly Grin I also have rheumatoid arthritis which primarily affects my feet so trainers are a godsend. I genuinely can't walk in anything else!

PoppityPop · 24/06/2021 12:23

I remember being a student in 1995 and the fashion was long flowery skirts and white pumps so it’s hardly a new thing and pre-dates Lily Allen.

I remember wearing a red satin BHS slip nightie and a pair of blue Adidas Gazelles to see Pulp Fiction at the Prince Charles cinema in London. And that's the most 90s sentence on the internet today!
PoppityPop · 24/06/2021 16:46

@TheVampiresWife
I had one of those nightie slip dress things too! I’d forgotten about them. I love a good blast from the past!

BananasAreEvil · 24/06/2021 16:58

Not a style that suits me but as far as trends go, it's a nice one. Unlike the cold shoulder one which was so ugly on just about everyone.

CheerfulBunny · 24/06/2021 17:01

@TheVampiresWife Argh, flashback! I used to go out in a black satin nightie from BhS when I was at university with a bootlace necklace I'd made from embroidery thread and a seashell. Oh god. I'd forgotten that.
Anyway, with regard to the thread, I don't really do the trainer/dress thing much as I am disproportionately thick legged and ankled and feel like a shire horse in trainers. I can't pull off that easy, carefree look. But that's just me, looks fine on everyone else. I clearly know nowt as I still love my heels (runs for cover Grin)
