I mean it’s fine, but it’s so ubiquitous isn’t it? Why?

I'm 50 and have unilaterally declared I am never putting my feet in a pair of heels again, ever. And I like white trainers and dresses. It's everywhere because it's wearable, easy to put together and fun. And fun's what's been missing lately.

I have been seeing some really chunky sandals on the young though - like docs that someone's slashed up.

Prettypennies · 17/06/2021 20:30

I prefer sandals as if it’s warm enough for a dress then it’s too warm for trainers for me! I think it’s a great look though, much better than uncomfortable bodycon dresses and shorts that show too much bum cheek

DD has these sandals.

I think it looks cute with smaller shoes, like low Converse or Supergas....basically tennis shoes.

With clumpy leather ones you look like you've got two big white golf clubs sticking out of the end of your dress.

Yes! Plus on a hot summer day leather shoes are not comfortable (unless they are sandals).

Whybirdwhy · 17/06/2021 20:36

My husband, who is also into clothes and style, says he thinks dresses and trainers look cool. Which is fortunate for him because I am sporting this look a lot lately (whether he likes it or not) - comfy and practical, what's not to love?

melmos · 17/06/2021 20:45

I love it. Please tell me what you wear that sets you apart from us plebs? Tia

shetlandponies · 17/06/2021 20:47

@Blankspace101

My husband who is very into clothes and style thinks it looks terrible.

Well that settles it then. Thank your husband on behalf of all women. Hmm

🤣🤣🤣🤣👌
speakout · 17/06/2021 20:54

I am of an age where most women have fucked up feet from wearing fashionable shoes, stilletoes, pointed toe shoes.
Bunions, grossly deformed and mashed bones many now needing orthopedic splints, foam padding and surgery.
Luckily I was a hippy chick and wore desert boots, DMs, birkenstocks, bare feet, flat pumps all my life. Now almost 60 I still have the feet of a 10 year old child. My feet are in perfect condition.

Any footwear that protects foot health is good in my view.

grownup2 · 17/06/2021 20:55

It's the whiteness of the trainers that puzzles me. My idea of being comfy and liberated involves occasional puddles and dusty tracks and unplanned episodes of weeding. Wouldn't want to be cleaning them all the time.

My husband - who likes to think himself sylish with a military flair went to work today wearing one loafer and one paint splattered croc. Only noticed on his way home.
My dh mostly dresses as a unicorn and is VERY stylish and he has also declared the floaty dress/white trainer combo terribly unstylish. Thank god for our menfolk.

Indeed. My dh would tip his hat to your stylish husband.
He did try the unicorn theme for a while but feels it was folly to sport a paper mache protruberance. The damp and inclement weather of our wet winters led to a horn droop and ruined the rakish look.

itsgettingwierd · 17/06/2021 21:03

I didn't honk it was a completely new idea?

I've been wearing pale pink puma pumps with dresses and skirts in the summer for years!

And I'm hardly what I'd call fashionable - let alone a trend setter Wink

They're my going out trainers. I also have my reasonably good nick trainers (pink pumas) and my totally wrecked taking the dog out trainers (sketchers with foot support). Trainers 3 and 2 get a lot more wear.

@osbertthesyrianhamster those are the ones, very cool

jakeyboy1 · 17/06/2021 21:08

I quite like it.

Need some flats for work so just ordered some black ones. Hoping will be acceptable as somehow couldn't get away with white...

PacificState · 17/06/2021 21:12

I don't mind it as a look at all but the idea of wearing any closed shoes in summer just sets my teeth on edge, my feet get so hot. I wear Birkenstocks and Havaianas though so can hardly claim to have ground-breaking style

TwoBlondes · 17/06/2021 21:15

It was Phoebe Philo wot started it.
Looks great on other people, ridiculous on me.

Nothing better on a man than a 'rakish look' Grin
ShowerOfShite · 17/06/2021 21:26

I love this look but can't pull it off myself. White trainers look awful on me, I've tried so many pairs.

CallMeNutribullet · 17/06/2021 21:40

Didn't we have this exact thread a week ago, complete with the word "ubiquitous"?

different trainers for different use!

I have (white mainly) smart city trainers
indoor gym trainers
outdoor trainers
trail running trainers
waterproof trainers
trail walking trainers

bunch of trainers too old to run so good to walk, take the kids out and about...

It's a wonder I manage to wear something else than trainers Grin

RampantIvy · 17/06/2021 22:35

My feet get too hot in trainers in hot weather, so I wear sandals.

MissKeithsNeice · 17/06/2021 22:35

I try to wear sandals, but they look rubbish on me. And they're uncomfortable. To be fair, I wear exactly the same style of white trainers 365 days a year - its not just a summer and dress thing. I try other footwear and my outfits just looks worse for it.

I'm def going to be one of those old ladies, stuck in the past wearing clothes from 30 years ago Grin

RE the ubiquity of white trainers and dresses in summer - the 'white trainers' church is a broad one. Oversized filas are going to create a really different look towhite-on-white air force ones. Then there are lightweight canvas trainers such as supergas which are a whole different kettle of fish again, or white converse, or the narrow shiny leatherness of stan smiths. Different white trainers can serve so many different looks.

MissKeithsNeice · 17/06/2021 22:45

At the risk of stating the obvious, its white canvas trainers that get trashed quickly. White leather is your friend if keeping then clean is a worry.
