Who decided that white trainers and dresses was a good idea?

I mean it’s fine, but it’s so ubiquitous isn’t it? Why?

Any footwear that protects foot health is good in my view.

I agree with that. I'm almost 62 and have never worn heels in my life. For myself I just don't like white leather trainers. I walk a lot and wear sporty trainers if I'm going far - with anything - but if I want to look a bit less casual then I much prefer canvas, even white canvas. It's too hot here (NZ) to be wearing closed leather shoes in summer - even though many do - but I prefer my feet to get a bit of air on them.

FreekStar · 17/06/2021 22:53

MN loves to dis whatever is popular. Pandora, Next, Boden, Mulberry, all come under fire just for being popular.

Yayayaya20 · 18/06/2021 00:22

How can you be ‘perplexed by the popularity’ of a look that allows women to wear ‘a summer outfit’ without having to reveal their legs or feet which is a huge thing for many women. Also the fact that sandals are often very uncomfortable.

It’s really not difficult to see why this is a much loved trend.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/06/2021 10:12

Surely women decided that it was nice to be able to wear comfortable footwear, and unrestricted dresses? I don't understand these sneery threads - if you don't like the look, don't wear it, surely that's not hard? And as for the poster's fashionista husband who thinks it looks awful, maybe he could start doing a wardrobe consultation service so we could all gain his approval?

summersolstice43 · 18/06/2021 10:24

I'm actually wearing a dress with white converse today, comfortable and cool for work.

Miseryisabutterfly · 18/06/2021 10:26

I am not sneery, honest! I’m nice!

I love trainers, I like white trainers. I own white trainers. I love people expressing themselves and wearing whatever they want. I was just curious to know why white trainers in particular are such a big trend with dresses. It’s a look I notice more than any other.

I’ll admit the title of my post is a little shitty. It’s my first ever thread on mumsnet and I wanted comments 🙈

I suspect these threads would annoy people a lot less if you could see the OP’s own dress sense. If a goth, or someone who favoured appliqué cardigans and walking sandals with American tan tights didn’t like my style, I wouldn’t be in the slightest bit offended because we clearly have different taste.
I personally am quite attached to floral dresses, white trainers and denim jackets. The dresses feel right for summer and look pretty and feminine. The trainers and jacket give the outfit a bit more edge and dress it down a bit so you don’t look too try-hard, formal or little girly. Plus they keep you warm, which is important in the frozen North. I’d love to live somewhere my toes are comfortably out for half the year, but I don’t.

FastFood · 18/06/2021 10:41

@groundedagain

I don't subscribe to the school of thought that clothes/shoes have to be flattering though. Something might not make you look as slim but that doesn't mean you don't good.
Totally agree with that. I look good in short dress, probably better than in boyfriend jeans. Yet, I wear boyfriend jeans almost all the time. I don't want to look superb all the time, I just want to look like me.
aiwblam · 18/06/2021 10:45

I imagine that it’s so that the person can walk comfortably

khakiandcoral · 18/06/2021 10:47

that said, it's possible to disagree without being annoyed.

GreenBiro · 18/06/2021 10:50

When I think about what I was wearing on my feet in my teens - it was mostly open-toed mules or sandals with heels.

I have smart trainers that I wear with dresses or trousers. I feel free!

No wobbling around
No blisters
Not freezing
Don't have to show too much leg / can hide toes
Can walk / stand comfortably all day
Dresses give you freedom, no outfit matching required, no midriff on show, easy to wear a jacket / cardi, can also be styled with warmer footwear in many cases.

I don't understand what's not to like?!

TheoMeo · 18/06/2021 10:53

Suddenly comfortable footwear is what matters Hmm - well until the next footwear fashion comes along.

Bluesheep8 · 18/06/2021 11:02

People love a white trainer in Summer though.

Just the one? Do they hop? Grin

Scrunchy95 · 18/06/2021 11:05

I noticed all the Mums doing this at Sports day 2019. Is it still 'tending'?
Personally don't mind it in terms of practicality but would go for pumps myself

Vohgue · 18/06/2021 11:22

@Judystilldreamsofhorses exactly

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/06/2021 11:35

@Miseryisabutterfly I'm sure you are nice, but the thread doesn't come across kindly. There are LOADS of things I see women wearing (or posting about here) that are not to my taste, but I couldn't even be arsed to start a thread to ask why they like them or why they are popular. Because why on earth would I want other people to feel shitty about their choices?

FWIW I'm wearing gold Nikes today, with a leopard print midi dress. Does that pass muster?

khakiandcoral · 18/06/2021 11:45

Thinking about it, I should ask MY DH if he has an opinion Grin.

All I know is that he thinks I have too many shoes.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 18/06/2021 11:47

ouch i cant wear pumps, they are too flat, they hurt my feet.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 18/06/2021 11:49

i havent got the impression it is a not nice thread,
it descended into mainly a piss take on our DH's point of view Grin, or at least that was what convinced me to read the whole thing.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/06/2021 12:10

I'm 55 and feel very happy and comfortable in my Stan smiths and dresses and big sunnies. I'm reassured that mumsnet style and beauty turn their nose up as I'm not ready to go down the John Lewis wrap dress path quite yet.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/06/2021 12:12

@grownup2

It's the whiteness of the trainers that puzzles me. My idea of being comfy and liberated involves occasional puddles and dusty tracks and unplanned episodes of weeding. Wouldn't want to be cleaning them all the time.
I have more than one pair of trainers.
PrimulaPrimrose · 18/06/2021 12:21

I couldn't deal with a pair of trainers I could only wear on special occasions and on the rare week it hasn't rained. (Live in West of UK!)
So I wear my one pair of trainers everywhere. Plus dresses never fit me well. So this trend leaves me sidelined.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/06/2021 12:22

You couldn't deal with two pairs of shoes?!
