Who decided that white trainers and dresses was a good idea?

I mean it’s fine, but it’s so ubiquitous isn’t it? Why?

I’m glad people are wearing what they like, I do the same. I didn’t realise this was a commonly asked question either. As I said in the op, I don’t necessarily dislike the trend, I’m just perplexed by its popularity.

It’s a godsend for me. Because of a knee op a few years ago I’ve been banned from wearing completely flat shoes (bye bye plimsoles, ballet pumps, and flip flops). I used to live in dresses and all of the above. So I’ve bought some trainers with a heel-toe drop and embraced the trend!

LikeTheOceansWeRise · 17/06/2021 18:45

I love this look and bought a pair of Supergas recently, but because I have short legs and very small feet, trainers look orthopaedic on me. I just cannot pull it off. Sandals and boots forever!

TooTiredForToday · 17/06/2021 18:45

There's a thread about this every week. The one a few weeks ago inspired me to buy my first pair of white trainers and a handful of floral dresses and honestly I feel pretty great in them! Comfortable, cool, summery and pretty. I'm quite happy.

TeachesOfPeaches · 17/06/2021 18:48

All I think when I keep seeing this threads is Lily Allen in the early 2000s.

Itsafineday · 17/06/2021 18:51

So what SHOULD they be wearing?

I hate peep-toe sandals. They make me gag if I wear them myself and I try not to look at other people's so I'm glad of a non toe-exposing summer option.

I know it's weird, I can't help it sorry no offence intended.

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 17/06/2021 18:53

I LOVE this and wear it all the time!

If you don’t really ‘do’ sandals (for whatever reason, in my case combo of ugly feet, manky toenail and needing more support) then there’s no other summer shoe option that looks right. Ballet pumps with a summer dress can be very twee; brogues might work if you’re 21 and gazelle-like but not really otherwise. Espadrilles are ok I guess but still have the no-support issue; you can’t walk in them all day.

Anyway I think the VERY specific Lily Allen look is mostly with prom style dresses so is avoidable if you prefer!

It’s easy, looks stylish (to my eye), can look like you’ve made a bit of an effort (if you think a fraction about the type of trainer for example) and it’s cool and comfortable. It’s ubiquitous for a reason!

Can be a bit weird if you meet up with your friends and you’re all the same sort of age (40s) and ALL wearing a summer dress with trainers… but heigh-ho, if you all look lovely who cares? Grin

AnAwesomePossum · 17/06/2021 19:00

I love it (though my go to trainers are black with white soles, so maybe not the same)! It’s comfortably, practical and so easy to throw on. And as it’s fashionable you can wear to about 80% of events.

And none of my jeans fit after this past year. Maybe everyone one else is in the same boat right now? Wink

mayjuneapril · 17/06/2021 19:05

Yeah I was going to say wasn’t the Lily Allen look specifically the big prom-style dresses with trainers and big hoops

Lanique · 17/06/2021 19:07

I love the look. I have a great selection of jumpsuits and maxi / midi dresses, all of which I wear with trainers. I'm quite fussy about what trainers I wear with dresses; Stan smiths or veja v-12s are my go-to. To me, sandals and pumps look a bit dated.

I like to wear them with a denim jacket too.

groundedagain · 17/06/2021 19:08

That's how I remember Lily, it was part of her "I'm from the streets" shtick

WingingItSince1973 · 17/06/2021 19:08

@SmallPrawnEnergy bravo 👏 I am a 5ft 2inch size 12/14 48 year old nanny and love this style. Dodgy feet mean I need comfort but I have always wore dresses with either dm's or some other chunky shoe/trainer 🥰🥰🥰

RedElephants · 17/06/2021 19:11

I love my Airforce 1s,
(I'm almost 55😆, old enough, to not give a toss what people think, not that I ever have anyhow, I wear what I'm comfortable in)
I have a black pair and a white pair, I don't wear dresses tho, I'm an odd shape Grin

Teeshirt · 17/06/2021 19:12

It’s a really practical and comfortable look. Loose dress - not too hot in summer. Long dress - hides your legs. Trainers - comfy and practical.

RampantIvy · 17/06/2021 19:13

@PrimulaPrimrose

White is so impractical too.🤷
It is where I live. Might be OK if you are a city dweller.
RaRaRasputinLoveMachine · 17/06/2021 19:17

Haha yep I agree @SmallPrawnEnergy I don’t care what my hubby thinks about my clothes either Grin

Love your confidence!

I still don’t like the look but it would be a boring world if we all dressed the same.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 17/06/2021 19:18

I think it instantly ages the wearer.
Really frumpy looking, sorry.

TooTiredForToday · 17/06/2021 19:21

I think it instantly ages the wearer

To somewhere between toddler and deceased? I have seen this look on every age.

Scbchl · 17/06/2021 19:21

I absolutely hate it, its horrible. So frumpy looking. Makes me cringe. Lovely dresses with stupid clumpy trainers. Just stop.

Kottbullar · 17/06/2021 19:21

It's not new is it? I remember wearing summer dresses or long skirts with trainers back in the nineties.

YelloYelloYello · 17/06/2021 19:22

My husband who is very into clothes and style thinks it looks terrible.
🤣

Blankspace101 · 17/06/2021 19:24

Why are we always policing women’s bodies?

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 17/06/2021 19:25

I don’t wear dresses in this country but I quite like the look and they look comfy win winSmile

FuzzyPuffling · 17/06/2021 19:25

@SmallPrawnEnergy

My husband who is very into clothes and style thinks it looks terrible. Oh EVERYONE a man has told us it is terrible, let us put our dresses and trainers into hiding and dress how the men insist. Hmm

Looks great if you’re tall and slim. Looks awful if like me, you’re short and fat.
Speak for yourself. I’m short and fat and look fucking mint in dresses and trainers. Confidence makes any outfit and I don’t give a fuck if I’m not a willowy woman, I’ll wear what I want!

HURRAH!
YelloYelloYello · 17/06/2021 19:25

I think it instantly ages the wearer.

I think the complete opposite. Everyone I’ve seen following this trend looks younger and carefree (and comfortable).

What I do keep seeing that looks ageing though is open shoes/sandals with rough looking feet in them. Do your feet a favour and put them in some comfy trainers look after them.
