I mean it’s fine, but it’s so ubiquitous isn’t it? Why?

My husband who is very into clothes and style thinks it looks terrible.

Well that settles it then. Thank your husband on behalf of all women. Hmm

blinkinhecklove · 17/06/2021 19:30

"Who decided that white trainers and dresses was a good idea" says the person who wears Teva, Birkenstock and Saltwaters @Miseryisabutterfly lol talk about the pot calling the kettle back

To be fair I don’t think the OP was having a go, just musing on where trends come from. Back in the 1980 when I were a lass you’d have got funny looks for wearing trainers with a pretty dress, now it’s a standard, nay dull, look.

I always wonder at what point it became OK to wander round town in gym leggings and a short T shirt. Nothing at all against people doing it, but I’m sure I remember when it definitely wasn’t OK to have nothing over your arse except leggings and then suddenly it was. Who wrote the memo? How did we all get it?

Spied · 17/06/2021 19:30

At 5'2 I look dreadful in the dress and white trainer combo.
I look like a schoolgirl.

Classica · 17/06/2021 19:30

It's a very accessible and wearable trend. Accessible in that most people of differing shapes and sizes can find a midi or maxi dress that fits and flatters and wearable in that it's comfy.

HelloBunny · 17/06/2021 19:31

The shops have very samey stuff these days & the influence of social media is huge, as far as trends are concerned. Nobody had their own look.

Twenty years ago, there were so many more looks & styles to shop for. I used to have some gorgeous clothes back then... And they weren’t expensive!

TheoMeo · 17/06/2021 19:32

Fashion has to change and come up with new ideas or no one would buy stuff - they'd just wear what they were wearing a weeks/months/years ago.
British fashion is not great imv but people follow to be seen as on trend.
It's sad imv. You don't get this in the US or Europe, there people wear what suits them first and fashion second.

TheExtraGuineaPig · 17/06/2021 19:33

Very accessible and comfortable ... comfy shoes and makes it ok to wear a glam/ pretty dress for every day things.

Out of interest, those who hate it, what other shoes would you wear with a midi dress?

Classica · 17/06/2021 19:33

@RaRaRasputinLoveMachine

I’ve got to say, it looks frumpy to me. It’s ok on teenagers/young 20 somethings ... but even then they‘d look better in something else.

My husband who is very into clothes and style thinks it looks terrible.

My lover, who is very into papier-mâché and potholing, says that no one gives a fiddlers what your husband, who's very into clothes and style, thinks.
whatthejiggeries · 17/06/2021 19:33

I love it and I am short. A dress with trainers looks great and it's so comfy. I only ever where flats now anyway. Heels are so last year 😂😂

I’m wearing this combo for summer and feel very happy with it 😊 Maxi or midi dress to hide my legs but stay cool and I’ve just bought a pair of Nike wearallday trainers so I can go for a walk without my plantar fasciitis flaring up 👍🏻

I live in Scotland, so will also keep my black denim jacket handy - perfect! I’m short and fat too, but zero fucks given! I feel confident and comfortable 😎

Hmm maybe he'd prefer a playsuit? What size does he wear? New Look has some nice options.

In the US? You must be joking. Grin

@Happyhippy99

Looks great if you’re tall and slim. Looks awful if like me, you’re short and fat.
I’m ‘short and fat’ and love dress and trainer combos. Sorry if we short fatties offend your sartorial senses!
Miseryisabutterfly · 17/06/2021 19:37

Are you stalking me @blinkinhecklove?

Thanks @MaloInAnAppleTree. I wasn’t having a go! Just interested to know why it’s so popular.

I think Cybill Shepherd started it in the late 80s

Who decided that white trainers and dresses was a good idea?
AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/06/2021 19:40

it appeals to me but i dont know whether they would suit me and i need not to have hot feet

Permanentlytiredout · 17/06/2021 19:42

I think it can look great on some people but not so good on many. Looks particularly awful on me, as though I’ve been dressed by a care assistant who loathes me.

thecognoscenti · 17/06/2021 19:43

@SmallPrawnEnergy

My husband who is very into clothes and style thinks it looks terrible. Oh EVERYONE a man has told us it is terrible, let us put our dresses and trainers into hiding and dress how the men insist. Hmm

Looks great if you’re tall and slim. Looks awful if like me, you’re short and fat.
Speak for yourself. I’m short and fat and look fucking mint in dresses and trainers. Confidence makes any outfit and I don’t give a fuck if I’m not a willowy woman, I’ll wear what I want!

@SmallPrawnEnergy I think I love you. 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
DurhamDurham · 17/06/2021 19:43

I wear dresses with trainers because I like to wear dresses to work and the trainers come in handy when I'm running (late) for my bus Grin

TheoMeo · 17/06/2021 19:45

In the 70s with Laura Ashley dresses we wore espadrilles and possibly pumps but that might have been later.

thecognoscenti · 17/06/2021 19:46

In trainers I can walk for miles and won't get sore or blistered or cold feet. That doesn't apply for sandals. I feel comfy and happy in a nice dress and trainers. I don't give a shiny shite what anyone else - or, heaven for bid, their HUSBAND - thinks.

enjoyingscience · 17/06/2021 19:47

I dislike this trend because although I think it looks nice, I’m too slovenly to maintain white trainers, so can’t join in.
