Who decided that white trainers and dresses was a good idea?

I mean it’s fine, but it’s so ubiquitous isn’t it? Why?

OP posts:
PrimulaPrimrose · 18/06/2021 12:23

It is interesting how stuff becomes accepted band takes off. Why not a coloured pair of trainers? I took the thread more like that than saying there is anything "wrong" with the trend. It's far more practical than most.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/06/2021 12:24

I'm sure coloured trainers are fine Smile

PrimulaPrimrose · 18/06/2021 12:30

I'm like a silicon valley exec without the dedication and the millions. Wear similar / same stuff everyday till it wears out and buy the same again if I can. It's a hassle to find latest style that fits and lasts so tbh I gave up on fashion years ago. Or it gave up on me as I found it frustrating.

Divebar2021 · 18/06/2021 12:34

I don’t think the OP was sneery. she perhaps is not familiar with the relentlessness of the “ white trainer” conversation on S&B. I personally don’t go for floral dresses and I tend to wear flat sandals if I’m in a dress ( long black dresses from Cos /Arket) or shirt dresses from Monki. I think it looks nice though on other people. I’m definitely in support of trainers being worn with a wider range of clothes - it looks very modern to my eye. I’m LOL-ing though at the inevitable comments about 1) the entire populations of Europe and the US who are not trend led and 2) someone’s bloke who hates it. Usually it’s someone’s 18 year old daughter but today we’re treated to a husband.

olivethegreat · 18/06/2021 12:37

I don't wear dresses but I will forever wear trainers now and white ones go with most things. I do wear long skirts though and I like the look. I did stop myself buying a denim jacket the other day ! Boots in winter. Never again will I wear shoes or sandals.

Timetochange11 · 18/06/2021 12:53

Perfect for me, have to wear a knee brace atm, so dress hides that and have plantar faciitis. I'm 5 4 and late fifties so no hope Grin

TheFairyCaravan · 18/06/2021 13:07

I love dresses/skirts and trainers. I can’t walk unaided, can’t wear heels and have very hypermobile ankles. At least trainers give me a bit of support.

I don’t care what anyone else, or their husband, thinks tbh.

Annasgirl · 18/06/2021 13:45

I love it. Everyone admires my outfits.

I don't understand why you are complaining - you don't have to wear it.

Do you complain about leggings and skinny jeans too?

I am very petite - but still wear this look and get compliments. I think anyone can wear it. Although I wear longer dresses and my teen DD wears shorter dresses with trainers.

It is so much nicer and more real /practical looking than skin tight dresses and very high heels - which are fine if that's your style, but not great if you run about after kids and a dog in the park Grin

Annehedonia · 18/06/2021 14:09

@enjoyingscience

I dislike this trend because although I think it looks nice, I’m too slovenly to maintain white trainers, so can’t join in.
I hear you.

I f*d up this morning and shoved my glowing white trainers into the shoe cupboard, the sole of one rubbed against the upper of the other and left a grimy mark.

So that lasted two days... Sigh.

NeedWineNow · 18/06/2021 18:22

I don't know but thank God someone did because I love it, and it's been my 'Go To' look when doing my one day a week in the office for the last few weeks. The last time I went out in heels I fell over in the Indian - I don't do that in my trainers Grin

'Everyone admires your outfits'

That's a bold claim! Everyone?

The postman, your neighbours, everyone at work or any shop you go in, the general public....
You must spend your entire day gracefully accepting compliments Grin

mammmamia · 19/06/2021 09:50

I love this look too... went to office this week one day and wore bright new supergas with a lovely, flattering, midi dress from monsoon in a nice drapey fabric with pockets, and got lots of compliments. There were several other women there dressed almost the same 🤣

Trick to keeping your trainers white - store them away from other shoes especially your family’s ... and I’ve just ordered crep protect spray after seeing it recommended on here for white trainers.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 19/06/2021 11:04

i have black trainers, but on the strength of this i have bought some white trainers, what a sucker

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 19/06/2021 11:24

I can see why this trend has taken hold due to the comfort levels it offers.

I'm not into it myself & have never worn it. I don't own any white trainers but I do wear trainers, just not white & not with floral dresses. I don't have a denim jacket either.

Last night we were in a very busy, very lovely seaside town & we waited in the car while dh queued to get fish & chips so had a great people watching 15 mins or so.

Women of all ages & shapes & sizes were wearing various versions of the trend & while I'm sure they were all comfortable, it struck me as actually being quite a tricky look to pull off stylishly. I know from reading here that 'being comfortable ' is more important than being stylish with this look & I am just one person etc & really who cares what I think once people are happy etc

I think we need more choice of 'comfortable' clothes!

MimosaFields · 20/06/2021 08:38

I think Instagram is great for promoting any trends. People with lots of followers (like Trinny) have been promoting this trend for ages so invariably lots of people will copy it. Personally I like it and I wear it

frugalkitty · 20/06/2021 09:24

It was my summer uniform in the mid 90s at uni, but I've only made the connection reading this thread. We wore long summer dresses with spaghetti straps, often over a little white t-shirt, and on our feet we wore white plimsolls from next. That's made me feel old thinking about that!

Naggety · 20/06/2021 09:33

It's a godsend for those of us with painful feet - don't take it away!

This! Definitely this!Grin
3Britnee · 20/06/2021 09:44

I think the white trainers/maxi dress/denim jacket combo is going to be the next side parting/skinny jeans.

Marriedatfirstyear · 20/06/2021 11:13

It's lazy and I love it. From once thinking any flat shoe is a no-no, being able to run in stilettos, dance the night away in them and now having bad feet to show for it, I never thought I'd embrace trainers as I have. To be fair, everything I wear them, I feel like I'm not making an effort. Mostly I wear wedges which also go with most outfits.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 20/06/2021 11:23

i walk so much faster if my shoes are suitable!

Threewheeler1 · 20/06/2021 12:02

ShowerofShite
They look rubbish on me too. I live in trainers, crappy old ones mostly, & I had a pair of white ones but I looked like I had bandaged feet.
All I could see all day was my own fat little stumps glaring up at me, as though I'd had a terrible accident.
They look so good on everybody else.
I'm better with colours I think.

Floisme · 20/06/2021 12:15

I'm not convinced that it's all about comfort and practicality. I used to wear a lot of dresses and one of the reasons I stopped was the continuous washing. As for footwear, if comfort was the only issue we'd all be buying at Skechers and there wouldn't be all these angsty threads about the correct trainers.

So I think it's very much about how it looks. I'd say the main appeal is that the combination of pretty dress and clumpy trainers still looks a little bit incongruous and interesting, although not as much as it did in the 90s. I think the problem - speaking strictly as someone who enjoys watching what people are wearing - is that the initial 'Oh that looks interesting' wears off quite quickly (particularly if the 90s still feel pretty recent). And then there's not really much left.

And none of that, absolutely none of it, is making a comment on people who like it. I'm talking purely about 'the look' - we used to do it a lot on S&B.

ArabeI · 20/06/2021 12:20

I've never worn this look as I don't personally like trainers. I do quite like it in that it reminds of of the early 90s look. Wasn't it also teamed with a denim jacket. I still occasionally see that, too.

SallyCinnabon · 20/06/2021 16:55

Because sometimes it’s hot but you need to walk far 😆
