I'm done with skinny jeans... what style are you wearing?

I don't know what's happened over lockdown (I suspect it's too much comfy loungewear) but I'm not enjoying wearing skinny jeans any more.

I don't feel particularly comfortable in them, and I just feel like I'm "over" them, I feel a bit dated when I'm wearing them.

What style jeans is everyone wearing now, which are your favourites please?!

@felineflutter

I recently bought some Boden girlfriend jeans and can't decide if I look nice or like I am on a mid-90s school trip

Haha yes me too.

I ordered some and thought they looked great and so ordered another pair. I am now looking at them and feel like frumpy from frumpsville. Confused

My DD tells me I am not to buy another pair of dark denim jeans. She is sporting a look I would have definitely worn in the 90s - black flared jeans, Smashing Pumpkins tshirt cropped too and baggy shirt with DMs.

I have a pair of black Boden girlfriend which are amazing but I ordered the blue version and they looked dire. I do not understand as my body is the same

@RampantIvy

What exactly are girlfriend jeans and boyfriend jeans? How would you describe them?
Boyfriend are not fitted at all, a bit slouchy, mid rise look like you could have borrowed from your boyfriend ( Katie Holmes allegedly started the trend when she wore a pair of Tom cruises jeans with a belt). Girlfriend are less over size and more fitted on the hips but relaxed everywhere else
Betsy88 · 27/03/2021 11:32

@KitchenFairy (and other Lily fans) - are they true to size? I bought some boyfriend jeans from M&S recently and sized down from 10 to 8 as reviews suggested they came up big (they were right - the 8 fit well) but reviews of these seem to suggest I might not need to size down. I don’t want them really right but equally I hate having that gaping waist in jeans too. Why is M&S sizing so stressful?!

Authenticchicken · 27/03/2021 11:56

I bought my normal size in Lily jeans. They have shrunk slightly but they are still fine. Quite like the idea of a bigger size for a different look.

KitchenFairy · 27/03/2021 11:58

@Betsy88 I would say I’m a true size 8 (as in definitely never a 6) in most shops, and the size 8 fit me perfectly. I would not size down.

I’m over the skinny Jean too and to me their more evil sister ankle length skinny jeans! I need full length!

Iluvfriends · 27/03/2021 12:06

Why are most jeans ankle grazers, i just want normal length jeans but everytime i see a pair i like they turn out to be ankle grazers.

Betsy88 · 27/03/2021 12:08

@KitchenFairy thank you - very helpful!

Neonlightning · 27/03/2021 12:21

High waisted straight leg slightly cropped jeans.

After giving up skinny jeans, I've found my holy grail (180cms tall, long torso). So much more complimentary.

dividedwefall · 27/03/2021 13:36

I'm back to my beloved boot cut and flares, albeit with a much higher waist than I wore them with in my 20s!

Unless jeans kick out at the bottom then they don't look great going all the way down to the shoe. I prefer ankle grazers in straight jeans as they look much better with my shoes. Nothing looks more 90s than straight legged jeans 'resting' on top of trainers or boots.

You sound as if you know your stuff. So I'll pick your brains.
Just before lockdown I bought some smartish cigarette trousers from Next.
I never got the chance to wear them.
Seeing as ankles are in and cigarette trousers end just on the ankle. Would you say they're still fashionable?

What are people's thought a on ankle grazer style?
I'm desperate to wear them a few times as they suit me.
What shoes to wear with them is another problem. I don't think trainers would suit the material Confused

likeamillpond · 27/03/2021 15:12

Cigarette style.

Sooverthemill · 27/03/2021 15:13

@likeamillpond yes of course you can wear them still. Most trends ebb and flow

dividedwefall · 27/03/2021 15:23

@likeamillpond yes to cigarette pants! I think they are timeless classics but definitely okay for now.

You can wear ankle grazers with so many shoes. I wear mine with heeled Mary Janes or pumps, or pointed flats (I have these www.modaoperandi.com/women/p/tabitha-simmons/hermione-velvet-flats/373311). Or loafers if they are your thing.

I wear ankle grazer jeans with trainers, and sometimes black/navy ankle grazers with white supergas.

likeamillpond · 27/03/2021 17:31

Thanks!

Loads of jeans on Brand Alley sales right now if anyone fancies trying a new shape... Levis, Jbrand and 7forAllMankind sales seem to be running at the same time.

Loads of skinnies, obviously, but I just got some Mango balloon jeans for £15 that JL is still selling full price. And some Levis ribcage wide leg.

ExConstance · 29/03/2021 12:27

I think I will have to get some tight flares and forget I have worn them before. I'm 5'3" and not long legged. all the boyfriend and girlfriend jeans have tried make me look short and dumpy and frumpy too, they just look too big. My legs are not that thick but DH says they look like elephants legs in those styles. Straight are fine but it looks to me as if it just indicates I can't make m mind up and am taking the line of least resistance to show I'm so over skinnies.

theshadeofgreen · 29/03/2021 12:29

I've always said mom jeans don't suit me because the first pair I bought (and immediately gave to my sister Grin) were very high waisted; they emphasised my belly and created a pouch look.

I've recently bought some cheap new look tori mom jeans and have since ordered two more pairs. They're not high waisted and fit really well, they're flattering across my tummy, and aren't skin tight on my thoughts but aren't baggy either. I wear them high ish on my ankle and it works with boots or trainers

OysterMonkey · 29/03/2021 13:03

The gap cigarette jeans I ordered arrived.
These are a definite possibility:

They were £35 when I placed my order too, which is an added bonus. I’m 5’2, so they are longer on me. And I prefer to roll them up a few times.

The black ones are definitely going back. Too baggy.

I’m going to order some M&S petite Lilys too, after reading these. And then will compare with the blue Gap ones.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/03/2021 13:23

I’ve just bought some mom jeans. I like the high waist, they make your legs look super long. I’m 5ft 8,

Lululu22 · 29/03/2021 14:27

Need new jeans and am more confused than ever! Want to replace my skinnies for summer - something to wear with trainers or flip flops, whatever, so needs to be rolled up. Straight, slim, girlfriend .... I dunno! Any advice welcome.

To those of you who posted about the Boden girlfriend jeans, I was looking at the website the other day, before reading this thread, and it struck me that the same style of jeans, in different colours, looked like completely different fits. It must be a Boden thing!

KitchenFairy · 29/03/2021 15:30

I love the look of those GAP cigarette jeans, I’ve just ordered them - and I’ve just dropped my Lilys off to be taken up a touch.

@lululu22 I think the thing with mom/straight/balloon/girlfriend is just picking the one most flattering for your shape. That's why it's a pretty good time for jeans right now, so many styles look current you can really buy for your body shape.

Obviously, flares and skinnies are a defined look, but the ones in my list are basically all a similar style, but with the emphasis of shape in different places. They're all basically cropped, slightly baggy jeans. Eg Mom jeans very much emphase your backside (and give it a certain shape) and waist, but can highlight the stomach area too. Balloon jeans seem to take the focus lower onto the shape around the thigh, but still showing off the wait because they sit so high.

LibertyMole · 29/03/2021 16:59

I have just walked through Manchester City centre. About one in eight pairs of jeans wore by women were skinnies. There was no particular age or shape of women wearing them.

All the different jeans styles were being worn, and loads looking really good. It’s nice that we have so much choice.

Straight with a turn up still looks really nice, and I might branch out to those from my flares.
