I'm done with skinny jeans... what style are you wearing?

I don't know what's happened over lockdown (I suspect it's too much comfy loungewear) but I'm not enjoying wearing skinny jeans any more.

I don't feel particularly comfortable in them, and I just feel like I'm "over" them, I feel a bit dated when I'm wearing them.

What style jeans is everyone wearing now, which are your favourites please?!

@KitchenFairy
I feel the same about skinnies. Put them on the other day and Shock
So I’ve been on the hunt for cigarette style jeans, as I have an ancient pair which actually look ok.
I’ve got two pairs coming from Gap.
I’m also 5’2, so I’ll let you know how I get on.
Can you report back how you get on with the M&S ones.
These are what I’ve ordered:

Haven’t RTFT yet but i’ve switched to Mum jeans from Tesco and it’s like heaven in comparison to my skinnies

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 25/03/2021 15:48

@KitchenFairy i’m 5ft 1 and love my Mum jeans Smile

Pic attached hopefully. Ignore the fingerprint mirror, its the bane of my life that thing!!!

Both the jeans and the cardi look great.

LibertyMole · 25/03/2021 16:10

What is the difference between straight jeans and cigarette jeans?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/03/2021 16:17

Straight go straight down from the thigh. Cigarette taper in ever so slightly. I think Cigarette is more flattering.

I find straight has flappy bits round the hemline.

OysterMonkey · 25/03/2021 16:36

@LibertyMole
This is quite good at explaining the difference

What exactly are girlfriend jeans and boyfriend jeans? How would you describe them?

IrishGirl2020 · 25/03/2021 20:24

The thing with skinny jeans is they are just so practical - you can wear the same pair with trainers, boots, wellies whatever.

Bootcut and flares are more complicated. I remember in the 90s needing a variety of bootcut jeans of slightly different lengths depending on whether I was wearing flats or heels.

Plus whenever it was raining (most of the time in Ireland 😂) you’d inevitably end up soaking wet up to the knees as all the excess fabric flapping around the lower leg absorbs all the water from any puddle you walked through - not a good look!

I’ve got a couple of pairs of wider leg and kick flare jeans that come to the ankle which solve the walking through wet puddle problem and they’re fine at this time of year but bare ankles are not so good in the middle of winter.

All these people wearing flares now, how do you manage to avoid getting the ends of your flares wet in the rain? Or do you just not mind if that happens?

YanTanTethera123 · 25/03/2021 20:31
**@PurpleDaisies* @YanTanTethera123* can you advise what the fit is like on M&S jeans? I am a curvy size 8 - wider hips, a big bum, and small waist. I often get the dreaded excess of fabric around my waist if they fit my bum/hips nicely. Would M&S jeans be any good for someone like me? I've always thought M&S were more for 'boxier' type figures?
I find they’re true to size and fit me well but I’m a size 16 and 5’7”.
I know M&S jeans can be hit and miss sometimes.

Authenticchicken · 25/03/2021 20:43

I spent many a day in my youth with wet hems on my bootcut or flared jeans!

reader12 · 25/03/2021 21:08

I’m always a full fashion cycle behind with jeans. I just don’t understand the new ones when they change!

reader12 · 25/03/2021 21:36

@IrishGirl2020 yes!

I’m not interested in soaking up the rain. And I can’t bear having cold ankles and all the new ones look so draughty. And I don’t understand what shoes you’re supposed to wear with them all. I have two pairs of identical warm waterproof supremely comfy boots that I wear all winter an thy work with skinny jeans. I think the shoe/rain/drafts issues mean I may be stuck with squishing my gut into my skinny jeans forever!

PrincessTuna · 25/03/2021 22:05

Back in the nineties I nearly had a terrible accident getting high heel stuck inside the hem of my generous boot cuts as I got off a bus. I don't like skinnies but they've never tried to kill me.

LibertyMole · 25/03/2021 23:00

Irishgirl, I admit it is a peril of the flare.

I have four pairs of flared jeans. Two are in long and two in tall. The two in long are the right length to wear with trainers without getting wet. I can dog walk in them. The two in tall I can only wear in the rain with a heel, but I only wear block heels so I don’t foresee any horrific heel trapped in jeans accident.

CovidCorvid · 25/03/2021 23:14

@BilboBercow

They'll pry my skinny jeans from my cold dead legs
I said the same about bootcuts about 18 years ago.....I eventually embraced skinnies and now don’t want to get rid of skinnies!
IrishGirl2020 · 26/03/2021 08:01

@PrincessTuna 🤣🤣🤣
You’ve just reminded me of a similar incident also in the 90s where I somehow got my foot caught in the hem of my flares coming down a stairs - only just managed to grab the bannister to stop myself falling. Just proves that flares are dangerous 😂

Charley50 · 26/03/2021 08:06
I've just bought a pair of these M&S balloon jeans. Surprisingly flattering, and I feel much more up to date than when I wear my old skinnies.

I just bought some of those, and bring fairly short, 5.4 they make me feel a bit munchkin like. Gonna have to be v careful on the style of top I wear them with.

likeamillpond · 26/03/2021 08:16

The new bootcut jeans look really good on.
They fit well around the bum and thighs so you don't get that overall baggy look of mom jeans.
Ive noticed very young people are wearing flares.
They look very 70s with their flairs and ultra long straight hair!
So, a bootcut in pale denim is a nod to that, If you're not brave enough (or feel too old) for full on flares.

I agree skinny jeans are starting to look dated.

likeamillpond · 26/03/2021 08:21

@LadyCatStark

Mom jeans for me but I’m lucky enough to be the right shape for them. I like to wear them with a tucked in long sleeve top or shirt to enhance my waist.
What's the best shape for Mom jeans?

I broke both arms falling over catching my shoes in my jeans. I’ve been wary every since.
I guess one good thing about lockdown is I’m virtually always wearing trainers now which is better from a safety point of view.

KitchenFairy · 26/03/2021 08:34

Many an incident here back in the 90’s with bootcut jeans. I don’t think there was much of a petite range for us shorties back then. Yes, soggy flares and catching my heel in the hem were regular occurrences. My hems usually ended up shredded at the back too from trailing on the floor and being stood on.

No idea what suits me (5ft 4ins, Apple shape) but decided I need those fugly pull ups as my bladder refuses to wait while I fumble with buttons/zips so no point me looking for a style! All I know is the M&S 'mom' jeans are too baggy even for my thighs! I refuse to were ripped jeans. On a teen not too bad, on a 61 year old, it says trumpy old lady!

KitchenFairy · 26/03/2021 13:29

M&S Lily’s are a winner. I love them, they’re high waisted and there’s a decent bit of stretch in them so they’re comfortable. These are the 8S, I may get just a centimetre taken up on them so they’re not catching on my trainers.

I’m also keeping the Sienna jeans but I’ll be buying the Lily’s in a lighter denim as well.
