I have a page on my phone open for Kakslauttanen.fi - I must've seen an ad and had a look at it. That's as far as my research goes!

Got an email today from Arket touting their basics. So boring. Crewcut t-shirts that look a little too big, in a colour palette that rivals Uniqlo for sludginess. Pic attached. Plz note the difference between brown, brown and dark beige, also blue, blue and dark blue. Only red is a bright red, of course. Pale pink and lilac are givens, naturally. After all they never clog up the sales rails at the end of the season.

I see what you mean bani and I'm not normally averse to a bit of sludge.

bo thank you for that sewing gauge link - how have I managed without it! I'm wearing my Makers Atelier shirt today (the one I took in by 2 or 3 sizes) and someone - not family - has just admired it and asked me where I bought it. Mumsnet needs a smug face emoticon. I think the fabric is doing most of the work though, I so wish I'd bought more when I had the chance.

banivani · 27/05/2021 14:16

Flo, that's very gratifying.

I remember years ago on Gertie's sewing blog (before she went full commercial, when one could imagine that it actually was a blog dedicated to sewing its way through that Vogue book or whatever), where she took a sewing class with your man Tim Gunn and he asked her "who she was wearing" and it was her own dress so she was chuffed to bits.

quirkychick · 28/05/2021 10:33

I'm trying to catch up, recovering from a cold (not COVID, luckily) that dd2 kindly shared. I really like the print on that Dries van Noten skirt, too. I seem to be very drawn to black and white atm.

A couple of things I've bought. A camo pattern t-shirt by Raw (comes up a little big, but not a problem) from Zalando Lounge, I will need to keep it away from dd1, who loves camouflage print. A Pure DKNY dress from Vinted, not exactly practical, but hoping I can dress it down too. It fits nicely and is knee length.

Agreed on the Arket basics.

As an aside, I would love to find more good basic T-shirts with just a slightly lower neckline.

For anyone still interested in the tedious saga of English-house-buying, I think the latest one is about to fall through over a boundary issue. The mooted completion date would've been missed anyway as the sellers have not provided various certificates yet. Pfft.

botemp · 28/05/2021 13:47

Oh Catherine, I don't think flowers would cover it so here's some Gin instead (provided you're not an alcoholic and all that). I may have watched too much homes under the hammer in my student days, but is buying at auction not an option? I mean, I assume the paperwork for that has to be in order before it goes under the hammer. England can't be that weird, surely...

I'm no t-shirt connaisseur but I think Agnes B is (at least used to be) known for t-shirts like that, but I think the sleeves were slightly shorter as well. They weren't so much lower in a scoopy way but stretched out over the width iykwim. Sort of like a boat neck feel but not up high, but not as neat and buttoned up as boat necks can be.

Welcome back quirky glad all is well and you got some new things.

I had a similar experience when I was wearing my me made orchid trousers at the consignment shop as the owner went a bit mad for them, and it's a small shops so the few other customers went ooh and aah too but I felt more embarrassed than anything to admit I made them Confused as it was just a little bit too much attention. I did own up to making them, but still Blush

Also, agree, Arket is boresville. H&M group is on short notice with me anyhow, they sent me an email for Weekday all about linen items, it was 80% viscose, 20% linen Hmm

Times like this, I wish I hadn't given up alcohol. :)

Most auction properties are probably too much of a project for us, sadly. Well, we'll see, this one's not completely dead yet.

CatherineMaitland · 28/05/2021 17:19

And, thanks for the Agnes B. rec. Will check it out.

Redandblue11 · 28/05/2021 19:53

Catherine… what a rubbish situation. I really wish you can get your foot on a property soon.
Good to see you quirky Smile

quirkychick · 28/05/2021 19:58

CatherineMaitland, that is rubbish. English property buying is so stressful.

Thanks, red, am emerging from lack of sleep and cold hangover. Bleugh.

Redandblue11 · 29/05/2021 08:54

Oh yes I am also considering Iceland Bo.

Right, I have added a coat to my various coats… but I needed to fill the gap of light coat that doesn’t show muddy paws and can take a shower. So I found in my dress agency a Barbour waxed cotton. Not super cool Mike Flo’s MH one but the usual Barbour jacket. Yesterday it was blaming here! So you will see I was wearing my red culottes I got from emin and Paul a couple of years ago, with a navy top. So red and blue.
The jacket is unused, absolute perfect condition for £50 I thought I cannot go wrong. It it for the woodlands and parks.
I would have liked a longer one… but actually I do have a Rains one to the knee so if is really wet I wear that.

Nice jacket, red, it will be useful. This cold spring, I realised I could have down with a short puffa jacket as well as my long, puffa coat. If you have a longer one too, then this should fill the gap. I like the red culottes too.

banivani · 29/05/2021 10:42

Tbf Bo those trousers are gorgeous. Compliments deserved!

quirkychick · 29/05/2021 14:11

Also well done to bo and flo on the compliments for their own made clothes.

prettybird · 29/05/2021 19:39

In the vein of 2nd(ish)hand clothes, I've just bought a supposedly new white linen sleeveless shirt to replace my threadbare and literally falling apart Susan Wolff one. It's such a classic item for a wardrobe and I was missing being able to wear it even if the weather hadn't really been warm enough here in Scotland anyway Wink

I'm due to get it on Friday - I'll post up a picture if it's a successful purchase. It was only £15.30, so not a big loss if it's not.

Floisme · 30/05/2021 08:33

I like those jackets - unfortunately the length seems to take 3 inches off my legs and then add it to my hips - but it looks good with the red and that sounds like a good price a

I got a silk shirt for £6.99 this week which I think might be my first charity shop buy since last summer. It's full-on violet / cardinal purple, too bright for me but it's a nice silk and a good fit so worth trying to dye it. I'll probably use a grey which will hopefully tone it down to a Smokey purple. It's an old brand so hopefully the stitching isn't polyester and will take the dye, or at least not look too weird if it doesn't.

Lots of people out yesterday, eating, shopping, hanging, some of them really dressing up even though it was the middle of the afternoon. Quite inspiring to see.

botemp · 30/05/2021 08:41

@banivani

Tbf Bo those trousers are gorgeous. Compliments deserved!
This is true, but preening to people you know (or 'internet' know) is different to relative strangers, it's too complex within Dutch norms, I was all flummoxed as a result.

Interesting to hear people are dressing up, it gives me (and my wardrobe) hope as that's not the case here but you lot are allowed to go drinking at late hours aren't you, that may be the difference? Although no one ever dresses up to go out here under normal circumstances either...

I found another people watching fashion focused channel, this time for Paris but I haven't had time to watch it yet. I'll probably get to it tonight. link there's a handful of episodes already and some thrifting/vintage shops videos.

They didn't look like they were planning to stay out late - a lot of people had their kids with them - they just looked like they'd decided to wear their favourite clothes to go out for coffee / lunch. I found it quite uplifting - the sunshine helped too.

I'm trying my hand at making trousers at the moment. They will not look like bo's. That is all.

botemp · 30/05/2021 10:39

I shall chalk it up to Northerners still enjoying a good bit of dress up then. Beats the London attitude of don't ever wear anything too nice or you'll look like a tourist.

Yes, sunshine, its finally here and looks to be staying. Bliss, I've tucked away all coats except one for early mornings on my bike and a light rain coat but I suspect I'll be able to put those away soon too.

Don't worry Flo I'm sure they'll end up great and we will ooh an aah accordingly. Mine looked a trainwreck to my eyes until they were done and I still need to fix the closures at the waistband Blush

OP posts:
XingMing · 30/05/2021 11:33

Going out for lunch today, with DH, in sunshine! Wearing the Me&Em wrap top (I don't think I did quite enough reshaping while wet, as the shoulders are not sitting quite right, but will do better next wash) and a casual tiered blue cotton skirt with pink kitten-heeled mules.

My compliments to the sewists, bo and flo, and to Red and quirky on the secondhand scores.

banivani · 30/05/2021 12:50

I forgot to commiserate with Catherine on her house buying. Bloody hell it sounds exhausting!

The advantage of showing off your sewing on this thread is obv that the pictures are quite small and will hide any flaws Wink

In one hour an auction ends on a pair of saltwater slide sandals in rose gold and I don’t know whether I should try bidding or not. Argh. That’s where I am today!

ToEllewithIt · 02/06/2021 14:52

Thanks for the silk stains advice – forgot to add that on my last post

Oh those glass lodges look amazing. We stayed in the Ice Hotel one night. While I enjoyed the trip itself the sleeping in ice was not particularly enjoyable. There was a long trek to the bathrooms and I don’t handle cold well

I agree that Arket is dullsville at the moment.

Well done on the self-made blothes admiration.

Love the print on the dress quirky

Catherine have you looked at majestic filatures, they have a slightly lower round neck (attached) and a lower u-neck which I really like. What a pain on the house buying. It’s really dragging on. I hope you get the boundary issue sorted.

Jacket looks really useful Red and I like the cullottes.

How was the jumpsuit prettybird?

botemp I have a top in that Dries print, I absolutely love it I have to say.

First bit of decent weather here and I put on a useful top that I got in Reformation. I'm looking for something similar in cream / white / black. I can see the reformation one for sale on US resale sites but it's full retail price, plus I'd have to ship across so I don't fancy it. Don't suppose anyone has seen anything?

The print is great on that skirt but the whole side flounce combined with pencil skirt shape made it too party dress for me. It's probably gone by now anyhow but would love another piece in that fabric, Envy of your top Elle.

What material are those camisole tops, I spotted this Khaite knitted camisole top on the Outnet the other day which is cashmere and I wondered if that could be comfortable in actual heat. American Vintage might have something like it too.

Speaking of, I'm over the warm weather already... It's not so much the temperature but we have that weird low/high pressure thing so have had a mini headache between my eyebrows for days now Hmm bring on the rain (but I get to wear my new Chambray dress today so it's not all bad).

OP posts:
quirkychick · 02/06/2021 15:45

Elle my only foray into Arket was with two sale dresses that got returned one was too small and one mahoosive. Though allegedly both the same size Hmm.

The Pure DYNY dress on, I think I could also winterise it with boots and a long-sleeved t-shirt under. Also a Muubaa sheepskin jacket, also Vinted and new for £50. It looks good with a jumper under, but I could only just about bear it on over a t-shirt to photo. It's elephant grey, which looks like taupe to me. I must have liked the style as I got a notification from ebay for a brown one today!

Nice top, Elle. I have a very old heavy weight jersey, gathered top that is super useful in the heat.
