I think The Row's flopflops are much nicer because I prefer a rounded toe and I suspect the angle of the Agni photo is to disguise toe weirdness because the front shape is square.

botemp · 20/05/2021 12:21

Islam Confused I'd like to keep my head, please, Xing pretty sure the curtain was there for Christian beliefs. Anyhow, I always found it amusing when studying historical buildings that there was a dedicated ehm masturbation room although they invited in their fellow noblemen for a showing too. It boggles.

Yes, Bani my thoughts too, crappy angles must mean wtf in real life, and since they're only available at Brown's I don't think I can be bothered considering the hassle that's involved with retuning a package to the UK, the paperwork is ridiculous.

But €780 for the Row is just ridiculous, I mean as best I can tell they're just a slightly nicer version of 90s Reef sandals, they might still do something like it, I should probably check.

I really like The Row one but they're ridiculously priced. I couldn't justify it either. I got these Stories ones. I'm really happy with the look but they are a bit stiff and uncomfortable. Sadly the atrocious weather has prevented me from discovering if they'll soften a bit or my feet will toughen up. I wanted to see The Row ones in person to try to figure out if they would be comfortable just out of interest but can't find them stocked here.

Oh those look good, Elle, maybe I'll see if they're still available in store or online. Yes, I wanted to try them in store too but nothing here. OH offered to get them for my birthday but even as a gift I think it's a huge waste of money, they're trendy, they won't last, I'll get one or two summers out of them at best. I've seen some good near exact dupes from the usual suspects but they're all synthetic so really not an option.

botemp · 20/05/2021 12:37

I did just find these but they're UK based and they don't deliver DDP so useless to me but if anyone is interested they're very similar and leather.

I do love it when Xing goes striding in and we all scatter and duck for cover Grin

I like the look of those sandals but they're no good for my feet sadly. I need more coverage, partly out of vanity and partly because I once got sunburned feet and no way am I risking it again. The trouble is every year it's deep into summer by the time I face up to the fact that I haven't got any, and I'm faced shelling out for something I'll probably wear for 4 weeks max. And so another year goes by.

Redandblue11 · 20/05/2021 18:07

I like the look of those sandals too … but the way the weather has been … I can only dream of exposing my toes!

banivani · 20/05/2021 18:59

Will apparently my decrepitude means I’m developing corns so I want to show my feet less and less Angry

Is this what we’re wearing now? Platform flapflaps? I’m not a friend of the toe post. Based on trying it out when I was like 16. Grin at a low point this week I was eyeing up the sandals on Uniqlo (with distinct nun like qualities) thinking well at least they look soft.

botemp · 20/05/2021 19:54

These Margaret Howell sandals just popped up on my Vinted feed (I blame you two and your less is less feet talk), anyhow useless to you two but is this the sort of thing you're looking for?

Sorry to politicise the thread, but I am reading "the Power of Geography" ATM and it's both interesting and a bit of an eye-opener on geopolitics. As you were. As DH spent time in the ME and I have family there right now (one in the fashion industry starting a company in Saudi Arabia), I might be a touch over-invested.

XingMing · 20/05/2021 21:21

So so sorry Flo. I am fed up with wearing wellies and waterproofs in late May.

botemp · 21/05/2021 12:36

Well I've looked at the & other stories sandals in the shop and my arches are too high, I needed two sizes up and then my feet sort of looked a bit lost in the front 🤷 I suppose I'd have the same issue with the Row versions so I guess I can stop dreaming about those. But maybe those have softer stretchier leather...

I've gotten sucked in by one of those hypnotising sewing . I figured you'd might like them too Bani (and maybe other sewers 👃💨) as they seem fairly simple to make and one size fits most. I'm wondering if it would work in a light Linen (as I have a lot of silk trousers already) or that it really needs something with drape. I had spotted something similar on the Outnet, think that was silk.

Shame about The Stories sandal ( yes I’m trying to make thy a thing). If you get to see The Row ones in the flesh please report back. Part of me thinks they must surely be so wonderful in the flesh to justify the price.

Margaret Howell ones look good and I stand by my previous suggestion of fisherman sandals. The Row also do those so there are plenty of good dupes around.

I watched the first episode on the bar suit reproduction. Looks like a great watch.

What was behind the protests at the new look? I must go and read up.

botemp · 21/05/2021 21:55

Well pretty much as above, the return of restrictive corsetry, and historical silhouettes where women were presented as ornament.

This a more expansive version of it, with some other interesting points. It's a long-ish but a good read and there's definitely some interesting echos between then and now. And Coco Chanel gets a few more delightful sneers in Grin

I do enjoy that they called themselves the Little Below the Knee Club.

I watched the first episode of Halston on Netflix this evening. Not fully convinced yet, tbh.

Totally misunderstood the last couple of posts after misreading 'sandal' as 'scandal'....

Thanks for the wrap trouser link. I really like the still photo but what happens when you move - do they flap around like wrap dresses?Guess I should play the video but I don't have enough charge on my phone.

I googled ' The Power of Geography' and also 'Prisoners of Geography' Xing as I hadn't come across them. They look interesting - as does the painter n decorator turned journo writer.

Revisited my dress agency - she's open again and isn't retiring yet - Yay! Got a red John Smedley cardigan but haven't figured out best way of wearing it yet. Need to take some pics but I'm still in bed - I so wanted a lie in today but I've been wide awake for hours Angry

Redandblue11 · 24/05/2021 11:42

Good start of the week? I hope the sun makes an appearance as it has been dreadful here.
Sharing a cotton knitted jumper that I got a good four years ago from a dress agency , is from Mink Pink. The neck is starting to yellow a bit , not sure if you can see. What is the best way to wash that?
So today I am wearing that jumper with the grey vintage levis I got a few weeks back .

We just came home from a weekend with friends (the absolute joy!) and hit a hailstorm of Biblical splendour... it's nearly the end of May and I want to get out my summer clothes

Redandblue11 · 24/05/2021 14:27

That hail storm is coming this way now xing … this is truly a WTF moment.

70sduvet · 24/05/2021 14:32

Hello hello.
I've been under the weather and mainly wearing pj's but have been reading along.
Kept meaning to comment but then kept forgetting what I was going to say as I'd missed so much so will just say Hi and keep up with what follows.
Red I love your jumper, my mum used to have one that was very similar when I was quite young and I always wanted one like it.
Yes, Xing we had hail here too yesterday DH got caught in it whilst running in a forest nearby and was completely drenched. I also really want to wear summer clothes, I've had sandals on once!
On Saturday I had to wear my Dryrobe out and about as I was so cold and I hadn't packed a practical enough coat though I was wearing layers and a cashmere jumper Angry
Currently wearing paint stained clothing, trying to paint garden furniture. I'm worrying it's going to rain again and wash all my good hard work away Hmm

botemp · 24/05/2021 14:47

It's a bank holiday here so I'm in my pandemic uniform of men's shirt and silk on shorts 🤷 as it's been pissing down all day but I hope to put on some legitimite bottoms and do a bit of gardening in an hour or so when the rain looks to be gone and we might see some sun.

I've packed away all winter things this weekend though, they had been lingering and I was just over them (and I also spotted a moth playing peek-a-boo in my Jon Snow coat shearling collar 🤬). It's a bit embarrassing how little of my winter wardrobe I wore thanks to this covid weirdness. Here's hoping I do better with summer clothes but the weather doesn't look promising.

Finished Halston on Netflix, I really should have stuck with my meh first impression but it was only five episodes so I persevered. Nothing to write home about or even to drool at the costumes about, but if you're into gay men having sex filmed from odd angles, it might just be your thing.

I'd try Oxi (concentrated on the area) on yellowing stains with a bit of age to them Red, might need to do it more than once.

OP posts:
botemp · 24/05/2021 14:48

*Silk pj shorts -annoying autocorrect Hmm

OP posts:
Floisme · 24/05/2021 16:07

Summer clothes? I'd be happy in ankle length trousers, a shirt and a raincoat. In fact I'd settle for putting the tweed coat into storage.

Red I normally use this kind of thing on yellowing cotton basics. I've not tried it on knitwear.

botemp · 24/05/2021 21:09

What Flo linked is the same active ingredient as Oxi. I usually just buy the supermarket own brand version.

Random off topic question, Red, I want to get some Yerba Maté, do you know anything about it? Do I need the special cup and straw or can I just make it like loose tea? Any recommended brand, preferably organic, there seems to be a lot available and I suspect a lot of it isn't the best quality and just capitalising on its surge in popularity.

OP posts:
banivani · 25/05/2021 07:12

We’ve dumped our winter clothes in the cellar already apart from a few pairs of gloves and obv that was only outerwear the jumpers are still upstairs

Bo the Margaret Howell sandals are very nice but I don’t see them being less nunlike on me and I think they’re similar to the ones I showed before that I was gently persuaded to put out of my mind? What is the big difference?

My linen scarf arrived, so now I have a better version of my Penney’s mustard scarf. Quite pleased, would have perhaps liked it wider (more of a stole) but I ordered it without understanding what the width stated would mean IRL.

Meanwhile I’m embroidering leaves. Weather turned to rain and cold here but summer is returning next week I think. Whatever will I wear? I’ve worn the J+ shirt twice and it gets dirty straight away, the fabric attracts stains like nothing else else. And I’m realising I’m not a shirt person? I really feel most comfortable in my fitted top/wide trousers combination?

Went shopping for clothes with my 14yo son this Sunday. God preserve us all from having to drag teen boys around shops, let me tell you.

botemp · 25/05/2021 07:48

I suppose they're not too dissimilar, I was more asking is this the direction of what you're all looking for as my expertise on very covered summer footwear is pretty much nil. A mesh trainer would seem the more pragmatic solution but probably isn't the look you want.

I thought teen boys just went into a random shop, say no to everything you suggest, and then somehow have all the things they need without trying it on by the time you near a cash register.
